ABSTRACT

The aim of the project is to develop a system capable of decoding patient data files,
containing patient information and images, and allows the investigating doctor to enhance the image
to suit his/her requirements.
Medical imaging refers to the techniques and processes used to create images of the human
body (or parts thereof) for clinical purposes (medical procedures) seeking to reveal, diagnose or
examine disease) or medical science (including the study of normal anatomy and physiology).

Computers are extensively used in the medical industry today, primarily because of its
reliability and precision. Computers are able to process huge amounts of data at lightning speed,
without compromising in any way on the quality or reliability or accuracy of produced results.
With computer graphics, it is possible to render images from mathematical data, and also
enhance the quality of the image as per the requirement. For example, if the image has come out
dark, it is possible to brighten up the image and enhance visibility. In order to detect certain sharp
features, the contrast can be increased. In order to examine a particular area in more detail, we could
zoom in and magnify that section. It is also possible to rotate images to suit the given criteria.
Computerized Tomography and similar techniques allow computers to capture images of the
human body which could then be used by doctors to detect various abnormalities. This project helps
in making the task of the doctor simpler while analyzing images taken from these machines.
Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) is a standard for handling,
storing, printing, and transmitting information in medical imaging. DICOM files can be exchanged
between two entities that are capable of receiving image and patient data in DICOM format. The
National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) holds the copyright to this standard. It was
developed by the DICOM Standards Committee, whose members are also partly members of
NEMA.

Tasks of my project are development of an attractive and easy-to-use Graphical User

Interface using the Java Swing API for doctors to interact with the images, Ability to load and
decode DICOM files and extract the image data from files generated by various specialised
machines, Ability to extract patient details from machine generated files, Ability to zoom in and out,
Ability to increase and decrease the brightness of the image, Ability to increase and decrease the
contrast of the image, Ability to rotate the image clockwise as well as anticlockwise.
