QUESTION 1

a) Convert 38 kilometers per hour to meters per second.

b) Change 0.02 us dm"3 into its SI unit.
(2 marks)

c) The top of a mountain, 1768 m high, is measured on a map to be 5247 m horizontally


from the camp in a direction 24.5° west of north. What are the x, y and z components
of the displacement vector from camp to summit? Choose the positive x, y and z axis
to be in the direction of east, north and upward respectively.

d) Given vectors A and B in terms of unit vector as: A= 20/-10y+30fc and B= -6/+15/-25fr.

i) Find the magnitudes of A and B.

a) Define the following terms:

i) Linear momentum
ii) Elastic collision

b) A boy on a blue skateboard moving at a speed of 6 ms"1 eastward collides with a girl
standing on a stationary red skateboard. After the collision, the boy moves in the
direction 25° north of east while the girl moves in the direction that is perpendicular to
direction of the boy's final velocity close to the south of east. If the mass of the boy and
the girl are the same and the collision is perfectly elastic,

i) sketch a diagram showing the positions and direction of motion of the boy and
the girl before and after collision.

ii) determine the final speed of the boy and the girl on their skateboards.

QUESTION 3

a) Explain the meaning and the application of the energy conservation concept and work-
energy theorem.
(4 marks)

b) The force acting on the object is given by Fx =4.5JC + 3 where x in meter and Fx in
Newton. How much work is done to move the object from x = 2 m t o x = 6 m .
(4 marks)

c) A 2000 kg car accelerates uniformly from 3 ms"1 to 9 ms"1 in 5 s. Find

i) the work done on the car during this interval.

ii) the average power delivered by the engine.

a) A particular part of a machine is cylindrical in shape as shown in Figure 1(a), with a


core section protruding from the larger drum. The cylinder is free to rotate about the
central axis (z-axis). A force F f is exerted tangentially to the drum which has radius R
(Figure 1(b)). A second force F2 is exerted downwards tangentially to the core whose
radius is YzR. If the magnitude of Fj is a quarter of F2,

i) show that the magnitude of the net torque is equal to 1ARF2.

incline with an acceleration of 0.7 ms"2 when the angle is 25°, then what should the
incline angle be in order for the box to slide down the plane at constant speed.

b) A worker on a scaffold on a billboard throws a ball straight up. The ball has an initial
velocity of 11.2 ms"1 when it leaves his hand at the top of the billboard.

i) What is the maximum height the ball reaches relative to the top of the billboard?

iii) What is the position of the ball when r = 2.00 s?

a) Figure 3 shows a box attached to two cords. Neglect the mass of the cords, and
assume that the angle 6 is 35° and the mass m is 150 kg.

b) Figure 4 shows a house at the bottom of a hill. A tank, placed at the top of the hill
feeds the house with water through a pipe that is 90 m long along the slope that is 60°
to the horizontal. If the water in the tank is 4.0 m deep, determine the water gauge
pressure at the house.

of water initially at 27 °C. By avoiding heat absorbed from the surroundings, find the
equilibrium temperature of the system. {cwater= 4190 Jkg"1K"1, cice = 2220 Jkg"1K"1 and
Z-Fwater = 333 x 103JK'1)

b) On an unknown temperature scale in a constant-volume ideal gas thermometer, the


pressure at -10 °U and 50 °U are 1.2 atm and 1.4 atm, respectively.
