Ethics & Islamic Values in Business

Assignment 2

Introduction

Many universities which give online programs seem to be facing same challenges as to
providing a positive identification for students which are enrolled in the online programs. Some
universities might require online students to enter the campus for testing centre to take test. Also
reducing the rate of cheating occurred in an assignment and test. This assignment provides a case
study regarding cheating and technology, and the moral ethics of why students cheat and how to
prevent cheating. This case study mainly describes that the increase in technology increases the
rate of cheating among the students. Josephson Institute of Ethics aims to improve its academic
integrity of degree programs.

Background

Josephson Institute of Ethics is an institute that delivers and develops material and services
which increases ethical competence, commitment, and practice all segments of the society. This
institute works collaboratively with many other influential individuals and organizations in
numerous of fields. Josephson Institute has conducted many programs of over 100,000 influent
leaders which include school administrator, public officials, and police officers etc. In 2002, a
survey of about 12,000 high-school students in which about 74% of students were found to have
cheated, Josephson Institute of Ethics intends to fix or reduce the rate of cheating.
Cheating and Technology

Q1: How would you relate this behaviour to Deontological theories?

Deontology also known as Deontological Ethics, it is an approach toward ethics which

focuses on wrongness or rightness action of themselves. In exam cheating is unethical this is
because it has a negative effect on the student and society. Deontology theory described that
cheating is something, which isnt morally good. The reason given was external factors, which
influence a person shirking from his duties. These external factors might motive as examples. The
society is in an advantage as cheating for student is unfair advantage relative to those who arent
cheating. Therefore, cheating students are causing negativity in society externally.

In pressure people get emotional and this is evolutionary, the thing is that emotions make
people humans. Consider that student is tempting to cheat on the test, just to get good grades as
good grades in more important to him that only way to get good grade easily is to cheat. The ease
for student to pass on the base of cheating made the student extremely lazy as they can easily get
their assignment done or copy the contents from others work or the contents from the internet
recourses. Emotions are the moral issues: which makes them know what is right and what is wrong.
Here we can see that relating to Deontological Ethics as cheating for student even knowing its
wrong yet seem to do it as to the pressure from their surrounding is more forcing them to cheat
than the lack of hard work.

This also affects the student cheating him/herself because the fact that was supposed for
them to learn from the education is not learned now. By cheating, students are losing their
opportunity to educate them properly thus making their future worse. The bottom line is that human
should behave in the most correct morally way. Although the real life problems are so much more
complex, through this I can relate this behaviour to Deontological theory. I think deontology
describes perfectly why we shouldnt cheat, as its morally wrong and we must avoid such actions
which would potentially corrupt the society and our personality.

Muslim society is mainly based on purity of love, feelings, and sincerity towards each and every
member of society. Islamic members are endowed with truthfulness, faithfulness, and
piety. Deception and cheating are alien like characters in contrast towards noble character of a
true Muslim. In Islamic perspective cheating is lying so its definitely not allowed in Islamic
ethically. Its unbelievable that, many students around the world in the educational spectrum are
continually and consciously choosing to disregard the academic honesty and favour cheating to
get their degree or diploma. Then again, we live in the age of cheating and lying politicians,
bestselling authors, and writers who are able to emerge practically unscathed amid their
occasionally blatant infringement on established ethical policies.

Sincerity in Islam means refraining from harm (wrong) for the Muslims. Islam teaches
about religious matters about their religion which they are unaware of. Islam says that no matter
how many reasons or means for cheating is harm and not permitted. The only reasons that student
cheat is because of weakness in faith, lack of religious deterrent, and lack of sense that Allah is
always watching. Shaykh Abd al-Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allah have mercy on him) said that this
was narrated by the Messenger of Allah SAWS (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that
Whoever cheats us is not one of us. This hadeeth explains that cheating is not permissible for
any subjects.

In the ideal world, Muslim students would never ever engage in such an blatant
transgressions against his peers, himself, and most importantly the Islams rulings. However, the
number of academic misconducts found among the Muslim students is startling and it alluded to
an increasingly application selective to Islam. This symptoms isnt exclusive to the academic as
our community is continuously picking and choosing those aspects in our religion thatll employ
in daily lives, and it is not uncommon to see otherwise religiously observant peers turning in their
best friends midterm paper from last semester as their own.

Ethical awareness is defined as the ability and willingness to identify the ethical and moral
dilemmas and contexts; critically assess, examine, or/and ones change ethical values; and the
examiner implications of their own behaviour for ones lives with other. The case focuses primarily
on motivation achievements regarding ethical awareness and this lead towards the second step of
moral judgement of behaviour to actions of his behaviour. Ethical judgement also defined as
individuals decision, as if something is unethical or ethical, wrong or right. In assessment to the
problem of education which believe that few students who would be able to complete the entire
problem with cheating.
A cheating diploma is a cheap diploma which devalues education. Education is much more
than just learning facts, it is mastering the ability to solve problems and understand complicated
issues. A quality education requires commitment to deeply understand of self and ones place in
natural and social world: and succeed in leading and guiding ones life. Students dont think like
this, they dont even that the worst part of cheating is that it is temporary acquisition of facts.
Cheating is the worst contribute to an environment and to learning students, as it shows that
education is a temporary acquisition. Students who cheat lack moral integrity in our community
which is primary caused by academic fraud.

Acting is the way to consist with the individuals and society typically thinking that is of good
values. Ethical behaviour is good for persons who are involved in presenting respect for key moral
principles which includes fairness, dignity, individual rights, equality, and honesty. Students felt
some pressure to assist someone else; but the students had expanded some efforts and given a fair
advantage and this even if not intended to cheat has accidently cheated. Given by the nature manner
of the situation, I felt that honest reporting by the students was an significantly indicator of the
ethical development.

The most recent lesson about cheating that Ive learned is that there is no benefit in cheating and
it doesnt help anyone for future. Another thing I learned is that technology advancement is also
causing cheating become easier. Cutting the edge of technologies might make education effective
and positive learning and teaching experience for many institutions. There will be many learning
curves if there was an online education throughout. I believe that the delivery system is important
as it highly discourage cheating where its possible. I had an inadvertently made the way in order
to ease the pressure cheating on quizzes by not applying a shuffle questions and answers option
within the quizzes.

This small over sighted result in students engaging in academic honesty, this occurrence
was different, however. More than anything, Ive learned the importance of knowing that cheaters
have no platform with the work in the future. Students with excessive absences cause many
problem as many students dont turn in their homework and often complain about their course.
Some professors and many students think that attendance in lecture courses should be optional but
attendance keeps track of excellent correlation between learning and responsibility. I learned that
sometimes even the discipline students have problem who have stopped working because dont
have a job lined up after graduation.

I have learned that the main problem in the class room is discipline among the students.
Student should not be allowed to use mobile during class, as their concentration is diverted from
studies and towards the social media apps on the mobile. The student should be provided with
reading materials like newspapers or magazine etc. Very important side effects Ive been
discussing about cheating are that its a mistake which might change the perception not only for
students, but for teachers as well. When student learn from their mistakes, they might be more
willing to let teachers learn from theirs.

There are a number of reasons for students to cheat. Students cheat in exam because everyone else
is cheating, also because the paper is lengthy and not enough time to complete the exam. They are
in so much pressure that they cheat to achieve high grade, as society has consider high grade to be
more prioritize then prioritizing learning and concepts. Therere is pressure from the teachers, from
parents, and including schools/friends/society. There is a reason as to why they call it high-
stakes. Many schools fudge the number of high student achievers in their school because they
know that their money depends on the student scores.

There many ways to prevent cheating but the most effective way to prevent cheating is to
provide students with clean desks. During exams, students are required to clear their desks that
only their pen/pencils and their cover sheet are the only present. Another way to prevent cheating
is to prevent or dont permit cell phones during test. During the exam, many students tend to bring
their cells and use them when the teacher is completely out of sight, so the best way to prevent this
is to take away their cell phone before the exam start (power off) or dont allow student to bring
them.

Another way to prevent students to from cheating is for the teachers to walk around the
room with minimum of 2 teachers monitoring the exam hall. Cheating has been created by lazy
attitude students who think exam is a waste of time and they should be punished for cheating.
Another way is to mentally support and encourage students to learn and not prioritize grades, as
this will motivate student to be honest and will keep cheating away from their mindset. Also
discipline the students, making them develop an active attitude and ensure honesty towards
academic work.

Conclusion

In todays world fast-paced, high tech society, the chances of cheating has increased and
researches has been shown that, the fact, that cheating is still on the rise. Universities, colleges,
and accrediting bodies are becoming more concerned about cheating, especially in areas which
determines whether the students are bring their technology like cells to the exam hall, or the student
is actually the same student who have registered for the class. The research presented in this case
study shows the main reasons behind the students cheating and also a way to reduce cheating, not
completely but to some extent. Both the students and faculty can feel the need to help curb
cheating.
