TheIdealWorld:Highendrecordingstudiocontrolroomsusuallyhaveflushmounted
(orsoffitmounted)monitorsthataresetintothewall.Thesearecalledmainmonitors,
ormains.Inthisguidewewillviewaflushmountedmainmonitoringsystemasthe
idealsetupbutIdontexpectyoutobethishardcorewithyoursetup!

TheguidelinesImgoingtogiveyouarebasedonbestpracticesforbothproand
homerecordingstudiosetup.Butmostofthisadviceapplieswhetheryourroomisa
masteringstudio,hifilisteningroom,projectstudioorhometheater.

Theseroomsmayhavedifferentgoals,buttheyallyearnforhighfidelitysound
reproduction.

Thebesthifispeakerswillonlyrevealtheirfullgloryifyousetthemupright,inan
acousticallytreatedroom.Thesameistrueforthebeststudiomonitors.

Step1:FindYourListeningPosition
Beforeplacingyourspeakersletschooseastartingpointforyourlistening,monitoring
ormixingposition.

Startbyfacingtheshortwallofyourroom,soyourspeakersfiredownthelengthofthe
room.Itsusuallybetterforthelisteningpositiontofacetheshortwallvsthelongwall.
Thistendstogiveaflatterbassresponse.

Also,thisletsyoumaximizethedistancebetweentherearwallandyourears.Ifyour
rearwallisreflective,itshouldbeatleast10feetfromyourearsotherwiseitneeds
treatment(moreonthislater).

The38%Rule(byWesLachot)

Firstoff,thisisnotarule,butaguidelinecreatedbyworldclassstudiodesignerWes
Lachot.Itsatheoreticaloptimumlisteningpositioninrectangularrooms,assuming
idealsoundproofingandflushorsoffitmountedspeakers.

Takeitwithagrainofsalt.Likemostrulesofthumb,itsbasedoncompromise,but
youcanuseitasastartingpointforyourroomsetup(later,youcanuseacoustic
measurementstofinetuneeverything).

Calculate38%ofyourroomslength,andputamark38%backfromthefrontwall,
centeredwidthwisebetweentheleftandrightsidewalls.ThisisthefirstspotI
recommendyoutryasalisteningposition.

Asanalternative,youcanplacethelisteningposition38%fromtherearwall.Butits
bettertobeclosertothefrontwall.Basspeaksandnullsareworsefurtherbackdueto
strongreflectionshappeningattherearofyourroom.

Absolutely,avoidsittingrightagainstyourbackwall.Thatstheworstpositionforcomb
filtering(unlessyouhavethewallbehindyoutreatedwithmassivelythickabsorption).

Also,ifyouplantousediffusiononyourrearwall,youregoingtoneedsomespace
behindyouforthescatteredsoundwavestodisperse!

Ifyoucantplacethelisteningpositionat38%fromyourfrontorbackwall,experiment
withdifferentpositionsbetween35%43%.Avoidpositionsthatareknownnodal
points,like50%and25%(nodesforfirstandsecondorderaxialroommodes).

The38%rulemaygiveyoutheflattestlowfrequencyresponseinanidealworld.But
tofindYOURoptimalmonitoringpositionIrecommendyoutakefrequencyresponse
measurementsatvariouslocations.

YoucanrunthesetestsonyourroomusingthefreesoftwareRoomEQWizard.

Thedreadedbassnullatthecenterofyourroom

Inrectangularroomsthereisanullatthehalfwaypointsbetweenparallelsurfaces
(frontandbackwall,parallelsidewalls,floorandceiling).Thiscausesanastydipinthe
bassresponse.

Forthesakeofyoursoundandyoursanity,dontsitatthehalfwaypointofyourroom,
lengthwise.Also,avoidhavingyourearshalfwaybetweenthefloorandceiling.These
sametworulesapplytoyourspeakerpositioning.

However,foraccuratestereoimagingyoudoneedtobehalfwaybetweenthe
sidewalls.Leftrightsymmetryisvitalforhelpingyoulocalizesoundsourcesinthe
soundstage.

Theevilnullat50%ofyourroomslength.Thisimageshowsthesoundpressureofthefirstorderlengthaxialmode.Dark
areasarehighpressure(loud)regions.Roommodesarenaturalresonancescausedbyyourroomsgeometry.

Step2:Speaker/StudioMonitorPlacement
Inthequestforanaturalsoundstagewithaccurateimaging,youwanttocontrolas
manyvariablesasyoucaninyourlisteningenvironment.

Imagineyouwanttoreceiveasecretmessage(yourmedia),deliveredviatwoarrows
(thestereoacousticsignal),firedatnight.YeahIlikeweirdanalogies.

Yourspeakersarearchersshootingthetwohalvesofthemessagetoyou(preferably
aimingnearyou,notdirectlyatyourbrain).Theydontknowwhereyouarewithout
guidance,sotheyshootblindlyintothenight(thosedangerousfools).

Andyourroomitstheominousweather:thewindandtherain.Anychanceitgets,it
willmuckupyourmessage.

Theweather(yourroom)ishardtocontrol,butitseasytotellthearchers(your
speakers)whichdirectiontoaim.

Speakerplacementisapowerfulvariablethatseasytocontrol.

Listenerandspeakersshouldbepositionedinanequilateraltriangle

Togetanaccuratestereoimage,thelistenerandspeakersshouldbepositionedinan
equilateraltriangle.

Actually,thereissomecontroversyaroundthis

Ithinkthethirdpointofthetriangle(letscallitthereferencepoint)shouldbebehind
yourhead,sothatyourtweetersormidrangedriversarepointeddirectlyatyourears.

Surroundsoundspeakerplacementstandards,likeDolbyandITU,oftenshowthis
pointinthecenterofyourhead.Maybebecauseitmakesspeakerlayouteasier.

Recordingstudiodesignerstendtoplaceitbehindyourhead,whichmakesmore
senseforstereolistening.

Fromthereferencepoint,lookstraightforwardanddrawtwoimaginarylines:one
angled30degreestotheleft,onetotheright.Placeyourleftandrightspeakerson
theselines,withthetweeterofeachspeakeronaxistotheline.

Anywhereyoupositionyourspeakersalongtheseaxes,theywillformanequilateral
trianglewiththereferencepointbehindyourhead.

Anotherwaytovisualizeit:Drawanimaginarycirclearoundthereferencepointand
placeyourspeakersonthecircle,60degreesapart.

Highfrequencycontentismostdirectional,soforthebestimagingyourtweeters
shouldbepointeddirectlyatyourears.Howcriticalthisisdependsontheoffaxis
responseofyourspeakers.

Yourmidrangeandbassdriversarelessdirectional,sotheydontneedtobe
positionedasprecisely.

Toquicklycheckifyourspeakersaresetupproperly,fromthereferencepointyou
shouldseeonlythefrontbaffleofthespeakernotthesidesofthespeakercabinets.

Youcanexperimentwithspeakerdistancebymovingyourspeakersalongthe30
degreelines.Checkthemanufacturersdocumentationforguidelinesonlistening
distanceandspeakerwalldistance(whichwewillcovershortly).

Heightandtiltwhenpositioningstudiomonitorspeakers

Yourstudioreferencemonitorsshouldbeatleast47inches(120cm)offthefloor.
Also,dontletyourtweeterssitintheverticalcenteroftheroom,evenifitmeansyou
havetoorientyourtweetersslightlyoffaxiswithyourears.

ITUStandardMonitorHeights:Forfreestandingstudiomonitorsthatarenottilted
down,typicalheightis4755inches(120140cm).Youwantthetweeterstobefiring
rightatyourearsinthelisteningposition.

Ifyourehellbentontiltingyourspeakerstowardthelisteningposition,dontangle
themmorethan15degreesfromvertical.Andbewarned!Ifyourspeakersaretilted
downandyoumoveslightlyforwardorbackward,thefrequencyresponsechanges.

MainMonitorHeights:Forrecordingstudiocontrolroomswithflushmountedmain
monitors(thatarenottilteddown),themidrangedriversareoftenlocated5758(145
148cm)abovethefloor[seeNewellsbook].Thisletspeoplebeinthesweetspot
whethertheyresittingorstanding,providedthespeakersaremountedvertically(no
tilt).

SurroundSoundSpeakerHeights:Allthreefrontspeakersshouldideallyhave
tweetersatthesameheight.Ifthatsnotpossible,thecenterspeakershouldbeno
morethan5to6degrees(about1inchperfootoflisteningdistance)higherorlower
thantheleftandright[seeToolesbook].

Itsgenerallyacceptabletoplacesurroundloudspeakerswithtweetersatearlevel,but
FloydToolehasdoneresearchinthisareaandrecommendsmountingthemabout2

seated(it'susuallybesttobeseatedfacingtheshorterside).Widthwise,you
wanttobesittinghalfwaybetweentheleftandrightsidewalls.

Therearemanydifferentroomratiochoices,sousethesecondpageofthe

Ideallyyourroomwillfallintoablackarea.

HiTim,greatarticle.Wearetrialingalotofyouradviseinoneofourdemorooms,with
someverygoodsuccessImightadd.Wearehoweverfindingthatwhatisgoodforstudio
isnotnecessarilythebestforasurroundsituation.Inasurroundsituationifyouare
listeningbyyourselfitmaybegoodtohavethemainspeakerspointingdirectlyatyouor
justbehindyourheadhoweverthiscanresultinaverysmallsweetspot.Wehavefound
toeinginslightlytoafocuspointacoupleofmetersbehindyourheadinthecenter
positiongivesawidersweetspot,althoughnotasperfectasthepreviousoptionitdoes
resultinabetterimagingandoveralltheaterexperienceformorelistenersintheroom.
Thishoweverisveryspeakerdependentandtrialanderrorisessential.

Beenstrugglingforawhiletodealwithaproblemofvideomonitorandtheirinterferencein
thesoundpath.Ineedasetupwith3videomonitors,or2withanotherbigonesome
distanceawayinthefrontoftheroom.Thispresentsmanyproblemssuchas
interferencefromtheaudiomonitors(inthe3videomonitorsversion)wherethevideo
monitorsfindthemselvesintheaudiopathmostofthetime.Intheotherversion,witha
hugevideomonitorinthefront,Iwonderwhatproblemswouldbeencounteredfromthe
factthatsoundabsorptioninthefrontoftheroomwouldbeimpossiblewherethebig
screenis.Howwouldwouldonedealwithsuchasituation?

(liveroom)inthere.Thefrontportionoftheroomisputtingaccenttothemasteringneeds
whilethebackportion,willhaveinstruments(Mostlysynthsandelectronicinstruments)

IfImay,Ihaveaquestion:
SituationMyroomisnotidealinmanyways,althoughitisagreatroom(8.4feethigh
and23x16feetwoodenfloor).It'sgotwindows,abackcornerdoor(nopossiblebass
trappingthere)anditisn'tentirelysymmetrical(Outch!)it'sgotanangleabout32degrees
thatcutsthefrontcornerforapprox5'onthefrontrightsidetotherightwall.Andonthe
leftpartofthefacingwall,thereisapatiodoorfromhalftheleftfrontwallportion,allthe
waytotheleftsidewall.

I'mhonestlynotsurewhichoptionisbestjustbylookingatit.Anotheroptionisto
putyourlisteningpositionintheotherendoftheroom,byyourstairs.

Isuggestyoufirstrunteststocomparetheresponseoftheleftandrightspeakers
ineachcase.Playthesameexcitationsignalthrougheachspeaker,oneata
time,andcapturetheresponseusingRoomEQWizard(freeacoustic
measurementsoftware).Therearemanyonlinetutorialsshowingyouhowto
"shootyourroom"usingRoomEQWizard.

Youwanttheleftandrightspeakerstoproduceasimilarfrequencyresponseand
impulseresponse/energytimecurve(ETC)...especiallyinthezeroto40ms
range.Focusmainlyonlowfrequencies(e.g.,below300Hz),asmidandhigh
frequenciesareeasiertotamewithacoustictreatment.

Thatwillhelpyouchoosethebestsetup.Otherthingstoconsiderareworkflow,
lighting,etc.IwishIcouldgiveasimpleanswerbutthatwouldjustbespeculating.
Thereareprosandconstoeachroomsetup,soit'sabalancingactofmultiple
variables.Bestletthemeasurementstellyouhowtoproceed.:)

reallygatheringenergyinthecornersasonewouldexpect.SoI've
createdalargesuperchunkbasstrapintheonlyavailablecornerandafull
monitorwallinthefrontend(patiodoor),4"fromthewall.Itiscreatedina
waytomakethesymmetryasperfectaspossible.Also,I'mtamingbass
prettymucheverywhereIcan.

Withtheseallsetup,I'veransometonesandsweepsandtheroomis
alreadygreatlybalanced.Inthewaythatmylisteningpositiondoesn'thave
largepeaksordipsmakingitquiteright.Sofarsogood....

Now,gottamakemycornersuperchunkbasstraplookgood!Thisis
whatsgoingontoday.

panel,youhaveaanairgapthatvariesfrom0toX/2=X/1.414.
Soifyourpanelis2feetwide,themaximumsizeoftheairgap=
2'/1.414=1.4'.Thatcorrespondstoaquarterwavelength
frequencyof1/4(1125/gap)=199Hz.

Adda6"thickacousticpanelovertheairgap,andthelongest
quarterwavelengthforthisabsorberiscloserto2feet,which
correspondstoafrequencyof140Hz.Thisisthelowestfrequency

side,theninthatcaselet'scalltheshortdimensionyourlengthandthelong
dimensionyourwidth.

Yourfirstpriorityistobehalfwaybetweenthesidewalls.Evenifitforcesyoutobe
