1. PASSENGER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM

1.1. Introduction
The Panasonic Digital Multiplex Passenger Entertainment System (DMPES)
IFE system provides broadcast audio to each passenger through a distribu-
tion network. It also delivers overhead video through a distribution system for
broadcast to the passenger. Broadcast service delivers the same media to all
passengers at the same time, allowing the passengers to select only what they
want to hear, much like changing the preset channel on a radio.

Latest storage and processor technologies

Digital Multiplex Passenger Entertainment System (DMPES) improves space
utilization and minimizes both power consumption and cooling requirements
by combining several key LRU functions into a single LRU, using powerful
processors, and the latest disk drive technology for increased speed and stor-
age capacities.

Latest compression/delivery technologies

Compressing audio and video using industry standard Moving Picture Experts
Group (MPEG) encoding techniques maximizes media storage space and mini-
mizes network traffic.

Technology
Digital Multiplex Passenger Entertainment System (DMPES) provides major
reductions in weight, size, and power requirements while at the same time
providing increased reliability, passenger servicing, and media storage.

1.2. General Description

System Design
The Digital MPES IFE system consists of three subsystems, each serving a pur-
pose within the IFE system, including the head-end subsystem, cabin distribu-
tion subsystem, and seat subsystem. Digital MPES delivers broadcast audio to
the seats and broadcast video to the overhead displays through two separate
distribution networks. The IFE system distributes power within the IFE system
as well as to the passenger personal electronic devices.

Head-End Subsystem
The IFE head-end subsystem provides an interface for personnel to operate
and control the system. Digital MPES also provides the means to interface the
IFE system with crucial aircraft subsystems, stores entertainment media for ac-
cess by the passenger, stores IFE equipment operating files and data files, and
performs real-time decoding of video and audio sources into the Main Multi-
plexer and video to the Video Distribution Units.

Cabin Distribution Subsystem

The cabin distribution subsystem provides data routing for passenger data
between the seats and other major system controllers located in the IFE head-
end subsystem. The cabin distribution subsystem also provides overhead video
and routes database information (aircraft configuration data) between the
head-end subsystem and other aircraft systems.

Seat Subsystem
The seat subsystem includes the Seat Electronics Box (SEB) and Passenger
Control Unit (PCU).

2.6. Maintenance Safety

The three primary areas for concern regarding safety are:

- Personal Safety The Digital MPES system uses voltages which present
an electrical shock hazard FOLLOW PROPER POWER ISOLATION
PROCEDURES.
- Digital MPES Equipment Safety Components of the Digital MPES
IFE system are subject to damage from Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
damage FOLLOW ESD PRECAUTIONS.
- Aircraft Safety Failure to follow approved maintenance procedures
and safety precautions presents a risk of damage to aircraft systems or
structures.

To ensure compliance with all safety precautions, the following additional ATA
safety conventions and symbols are used in all Panasonic Avionics Corporation
documentation:

- Warning indicates a risk of personal injury

- Caution indicates risk of equipment damage
- Note additional information to make the task easier

sections of seat electronic boxes (SEBs).
There are four SWDs, 2 per side, in the B737- 800.
They are designated from the Main Multiplexer (MM) as Left and Right.
Power is supplied from aircraft circuit breakers.

3.15. In-Seat Audio

The Main Multiplexer sends Passenger Entertainment System (PES) Data
simultaneously to three Zone Multiplexers.
Which passes this data on to the Side Wall Disconnects (SWDs), or the Floor
Disconnect Box (FDB).
The Disconnect Boxes output to the columns of Seat Electronics Boxes (SEBs).
SEBs are arranged from forward to aft, with each column terminated for PES
Data and PSS Data.
The SEB receives the PES Data and de-multiplexes it (individually) for each
Passenger Control Unit (PCU) attached. The PCU sends Channel Up/Down
information to the SEB.

3.16. System Signal Explanations C&C Data

Control and Command (C&C) data controls the overhead retractable LCDs
(rLCDs). It controls:
PES Data - LCD On/Off control
Passenger Entertainment System (PES) provides analog audio to passengers. - Which video to display on each port
Analog audio is also called system audio data. Audio starts at the Main - Retracting and deploying the overhead LCD monitors
Mux. Audio is amplified and digitized, and then pieces of each channel
are inserted into a continuous stream of audio data called PES data.
The PES data is split, routed, and sent oneway to the SEB columns.

The SEB receives the PES data and splits it to send to the next SEB
(or termination plug). It processes internally according to the start-up
configuration data received from the MM.
The MM communicates cabin configuration information to the SEBs on a
different set of data lines.

Cabin Configuration System (CCS) data consists of the channel assignments

(audio and video-audio) at the PCU, initial volume level, PA zone
assignments, and video/audio zone assignments. CCS data is stored in an
Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) in both the
MM and the BITE Panel (BP).

PSS data
Passenger Service System (PSS) reports configuration and layout data about
cabin seating arrangement, PA zones, video zones, bilingual video tags and
stereo music tags, and skipped PCU channels. Data travels bidirectionally:

- First data travels from the MUX to the first SEB and
then on to the last SEB on that column
- Then it travels from the last SEB on that column to
the first SEB and back to the MUX on the next cycle

3.17. Power Distribution

Power is supplied to the IFE system from aircraft power panels.
The IFE Main circuit breaker is located on the 2000VU Power Panel (with
relays), and energizes all IFE components.
Of course, there is a master power switch in the cockpit.
The Overhead Video System (OVS) also has a Power Switch at the Head-End.
This switch provides a break for power to the Crew Panel (CP).
It also goes to relays for Video Distribution Unit (VDU) Power for the
overhead displays.
