CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS

Introduction

Globalization has change our lives and one of the ways in which it is changing our live

everyday is how we communicate; through cellphone we are communicating easily. Cellphone is

one of the advancements of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). It plays an

integral part of student's life. Even casual observation of today's high school students will reveal

cellphones being used in every possible campus setting and even in classroom.

As confirmed by Tindell et al. (2012), students used their cellphones during class

time despite of the rules. As cellphone technology continues its rapid development, the device

appears capable of contributing to student learning and improved academic performance.

However, (Lepp et al., 2013) found that cellphone use was negatively associated

with an objective measure of cardiorespiratory fitness in a sample of typical high school student.

Student who using cellphone may also disrupt behaviors conducive to academic success. Mobile

phone addiction can be explained by the fact that students find the use of mobile phone to be

exciting. Any behavior that gives satisfaction or helps to get rid of a negative behavior such as

tension or boredom leads to intensification of that behavior for taking pleasure or getting rid of a

negative situation as is the case with mobile phone. In spite of some knowledge on unfavorable

health effects, mobile phones are gaining popularity, especially in young generation. Youth now a

days are mostly using cellphone for their own needs.

Looking at the actual scenario In Lun National High School, students relying on their

mobile phones particularly in searching definition or information. Mostly reported issue in

1
mobile phone usage is charging. In year 2017, about 10 mobile phone from 5 male and 5 female

were confiscated due to charging without permit (LPNHS Guidance Councilor, 2107)

Thus, this study aimed to describe and find out the implication of mobile phone usage

among students of Lun Padidu National High School. Specifically Grade 12 Senior High School

and to determined its effect to their academic performance. Thus, this study would one way to

help the Guidance Councilor to provide basis in making program about mobile phones.

Statement of the Problem

The main objective of this study is to describe the implication of using cellphone in

the academic performance of Grade 12 Senior High School Students.

Specifically, this study answered the following questions:

1. How many Grade 12 students using their cellphones?

2. What is the average time spent on different features of mobile phone by the Grade 12

students?

3. How is the extent of using cellphone by the Grade 12 Students inside the class?

4. What are the experiences of the parents on their students who used cellphone at home?

5. Based on the result of the study, what program will be implemented to lessen the issue in

cellphone usage by the Grade 12 students?

Significance of the study

2
This study will benefit the following:

Teachers. This study will give the teacher more information on how to handle their

students in the presence of technology.

Students. In their new behavioral state, students are the most and first influence in a

new trend or fad existing. Thus, this study will give them awareness on how to use their

cellphone in school.

Parents. This research gives awareness to the parents who have students using

cellphones, and how they can be part and cope up of the existing gadgets. This will also give

them how to deal with their children..

Faculty and staff. This study will provide basis on making guidelines about

restrictions of cellphones.

Barangay council. This study will give the barangay council a data about youth and

students using cellphone. This will also serve as their basis in making program.

Scope and Delimitation of the study

This study aims to describe the implication of using cellphone by the Grade 12

students in their academic performance.

In order to give value and importance to the students, the participants of this study are

the Grade 12 Students in Lun Padidu National High School, Senior High School Department,

Teachers, and Parents.

This study was conducted at Lun Padidu Senior High School Department. Wherein

the researchers is currently studying. Specifically, this study covered SY 2017-2018.

Definition of terms

For the better understanding of the readers, terms are conceptually and operationally

define as follows.

Cellphone- Operationally, it is a wireless telephone using a system of low-powered

radio transmitters, with each transmitter covering a distinct geographical area and computer

equipment to switch a call from one area to another, thus enabling broad-scale portable phone

service (Ask.com 2017).

Conceptually, there are different types of cellphone such as androids, I phone,

keypads and etc., this gadgets is the common gadgets used by the Senior High School Students to

used Internet connection through turning on wifi or cellular data.

Internet- Operationally, it is a global computer network providing a variety of

information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using

standardized communication protocols (Google.com 2017)

Conceptually,It is an electronic communication network that existed around the

world. Its the reason why student connected to the world via social media. Without Internet

student can't able to connect to the world. Therefore, Internet is one of the important invention

that gave influence to the student. One of the example is using YouTube.

Students- Operationally, it refers to a person who is studying at a school or college.

4
Conceptually, They are the main respondents of the study, they are the first updated if

theirs a new trend or fad in the society. The students here is what we called now millennial

belonged to the 21st century era. The students the one who uses the Internet connection and they

are the one who will answer the given question.

Teachers- Operationally, it refers to a person who teaches, especially in a school.

Conceptually, they are secondary respondents of the study. A person whose a job is to

teach students about certain subjects. they are the one gives the researchers and guide how the

research flows and what are the steps used in the research.

Technology- Operationally, Technology refers to a body of knowledge devoted to

creating tools, processing actions and extracting of materials. The term Technology is wide

and everyone has their own way of understanding the meaning of technology. We use

technology to accomplish various tasks in our daily lives, in brief; we can describe technology as

products, processes or organizations. We use technology to extend our abilities, and that makes

people as the most important part of any technological system.

Conceptually, it is the way or bridge to use Internet connection. The most commonly

type of technology that Grade12 students used right now now is cellphone.

Features- Operationally, it is prominent or conspicuous part or characteristic. The

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Today a cell phone isn't just a rich man's fashion accessory in Philippines. It's

transforming the way millions of people do business in a country where even landlines were a

luxury barely a decade ago. According to Oxford English Dictionary the word cellphone or

"mobile" was in association with the Latin phrase "mobile vulgus " excitable crowd.Cellphone

technology new senses of speed and connectivity to social life.

Smith (2011) presented that 87% of smart phone owners access the internet or email on

their hand held, including two thirds (68%) who do so on a typical day. Also ,25% of smart phone

8
owners say that they mostly go online using their phone ,rather than say that they mostly go

online using their phone, rather than with a PC.This support our assumption that smart phones

replaced PC's as a mean of access to the internet.

Same study by Lanigan,et al (2009), in her research presented that from a sample of 97

internet user the majority of participants (89%)perceived that the PC impact and 20% a mostly

negative impact.

Another research suggests that many college students perceive the cell phone primarily as

a leisure device, and most commonly use cell phones for social networking, surfing the Internet,

watching videos, and playing games (Lepp 2015).

Thus, Constant usage and addiction to cell phones has affected the people physically,

psychologically, and socially. Excessive mobile phone use has been found to be associated with

health problems. An estimation around 4.5 billion of people using cellphone worldwide

Goswami et al, (2016).

Inappropriate use of mobile phone by students presents many deleterious effects, for

example, usage of phones during lectures causes disturbances in classrooms affecting students

academic performances, increased freedom from parents along with decreased social freedom

Baron et al, (2016).

Benefits of Smart Phone Usage

Alfawareh and Jusoh (2014),Smart phones usage includes making calls, cheeking

documents ,taking pictures ,browsing Internet, downloading software ,listening to music ,taking

video, watching movies ,use as an alarm clock and use as a watch .According to University of

9
Michigan's electrical engineering and computer science professor Elliot Soloway, "in a student's

capable hands ,especially with numerous features like a camera,a GPS,and an accelerometer, a

smart phone might as well be a rocket ship.

Besides, Oksman (2010), stressed that in addition to new media ,the traditional media

such as newspaper radio and TV are also made available on the smart phone through the Internet

the Internet.

In addition, a study of a group of undergraduate students, published in the journal

computers in Human behavior in 2015,found that among undergraduate students total mobile

phone use was "a significant and negative predictor of college students academic performance

,objectively measured as cumulative GPA".The study controlled for various other factors.

Furthermore, 2015 study by the London School of Economics ,conducted in four cities of

England, found that test scores increased by more than 6% in schools which banned cell phones.

Moreover, 2016 Researchers Julia Duin and Natasha Gupta of Macquarie university

performed an experiment in 2016 testing the effect of Facebook distractions in the classroom. The

study found that students interested in the subject material and the way it was presented were less

likely to be distracted by Facebook, however ,those same students with access phones still

performed lower than students that were not allowed access to cell phones during the lecture.

And a 2017 collective study published by Applied Cognitive Psychology ,found that

students retained less knowledge when allowed to use or have a cellphone on them during

lectures.during the Experiment ,students that were not allowed access to a cell phone tested

better than the students that had access to cell phones.

10
Another works by Xinchua (2014)Filipinos are using their mobile phones not only to

communicate but also as mobile computers as well ,According to a recent market study issued.

Lastly, a TNS global customized research company ,said in its report that Filipino

consumers are not just using cellphone and texting messages and photos ,but also as a means of

internet -on-the-go allowing users to be always online of the 38,000 respondents in Metro Manila

,75 percent of the respondents surveyed used mobile phones to take photos or videos,45 percent

to browse the internet ;44% to access their social net working sites and 372 to check their

emails.the study conducted from November 2012 to January 2013."Based on the findings of the

study ,the increase in various mobile activities explain the growing trend of Wi-Fi accessibility in

public areas ,"said TNS Philippines Managing Director Gary de Ocampo.

18
The results above shows that the Grade 12 Students used their cellphone in different time.

20 students spent their 1-2 hour/s of using cellphone, 13 students used their cellphone in 4-6

hours, 12 students used their cellphone in 2-4 hours, 4 students used their cellphone in 6-12

hours and only 1 student used his/her cellphone in 12-24 hours a day.

Therefore, the role of cellphone plays an integral part of Grade 12 students in making

their study easier.

In order to know extent of using cellphone by the Grade 12 Students inside the class

we've interviewed 5 selected teacher from Senior High School and transcribed their answers.

And how do they managed or control students using cellphone in the class.

My students used their cellphones in finding information through Merriam Webster

Dictionary. I managed them through reminders and rules regarding on the cellphone usage like

no charging on class time.

The usual events that make the students used their cellphone when they have activities

and requirements given by their teachers as their task. And I observe when they got bored theyre

usually used their phone to make fun of theme selves. I also gave them rules and regulation like

no cellphone using in class time if it is not necessary.

My students used their cellphone when they got bored. I let them used their cellphone

anytime as long as they are not abused it.

Now a days cellphone plays most important part of my student educations, in my

observation they usually rely on their cellphone to find information. I gave them reminders and

rules that I would let them used their cellphones as long as they are not disturbing my class.

19
As I observed, even in taking notes now a days they easily captured and saved it in their

mobile phones. I easily get annoyed but I also accept the fact that we are now in 21st century.

Therefore, the gathered information from the selected teacher implied that the cellphone

has a big part in the academic performance of the Grade 12 Students in Lun Padidu National

High School.

Weve also asked selected parents of Grade 12 Students in Lun Padidu National High

School regarding on the experiences of the parents on their students who used cellphone at home.

As I observed, using cellphone in the academic performance of my child can really help a

lot. But their behavior change a lot also.

Because of too much using and facing their cellphone, their task on home are being

disregard and it seems that they are so busy something in their phone.

She cant go school early because she spent more time doing facebook chatting or texting.

I think cellphone are useful to the study of my child in terms of making their projects and

assignment. It has also bad effect like too much using of it. Their using it until midnight that can

affect their study.

Cellphone help my childs study in easily finding information. But I also remind him in

the limitations and rules.
