1. How to be a Good Teacher

Being a good teacher can be the

most rewarding and exciting job in the
world. However, being a teacher who
doesn't work effectively can be stressful,
painful, and exhausting.
Based on a thorough literature review,
Paul Ramsden, a noted researcher on
teaching and learning, along with several co-
authors offered this description of good
teachers.
Picture 1
Source: https://paulramsden48.wordpress.com/

There are some definitions of good teacher based on Ramsdens

opinion:
Table 2.1
Definition of Good Teacher
No The Definition Explanation
1 Good Teachers Good teachers are also good learners; for
example, they learn through their own
reading, by participating in a variety of
professional development activities, by
listening to their students, by sharing ideas
with their colleagues, and by reflecting on
classroom interactions and students
achievements. Therefore, Good teaching are
dynamic, reflective, and constantly evolving.
Good teachers display enthusiasm for their
subject and a desire to share it with their
students.
Good teachers know how to modify their
teaching strategies according to the particular
students, subject matter, and learning
environment.
Good teachers encourage learning for
understanding and are concerned with

English for Primary Teacher Education Study Program (Neli) 8

developing their students critical thinking
skills, problem-solving skills, and problem-
approach behaviors.
5 Good teachers demonstrate an ability to
transform and extend knowledge, rather than
merely transmitting it; they draw on their
knowledge of their subject, their knowledge
of their learners, and their general
pedagogical knowledge to transform the
concepts of the discipline into terms that are
understandable to their students.
6 Good teachers set clear goals, use valid and
appropriate assessment methods, and
provide high-quality feedback to their
students.
7 Good teachers show respect for their
students; they are interested in both their
professional and their personal growth,
encourage their independence, and sustain
high expectations of them.

2. How to be a favorable teacher

A good teacher affects eternity,

he can never tell where his
influence stops. (Henry Adams)

The following characteristics and qualities, he/she can become a very

good teacher with large fan base too.

Table 2.2
Characteristics and Qualities of Good Teacher
No Characteristics/ Qualities Explanation
1 Friendliness and I think the most important characteristic
Congeniality of a good teacher can have is to be
friendly and congenial with his students.

English for Primary Teacher Education Study Program (Neli) 9

It is a plus if his students can share their
problems with him, without being afraid
or hesitant. I think students have always
thoughts of their teachers as their enemies
(in a funny sense though). With this
mentality, they can never be close to each
other, and besides that how many
teachers did you like who were not
friendly, and were rather arrogant and
rude.

2 A Good Personality A good teacher has a very good

personality; there is no second thought
about it. Students always get attracted to
teachers with good personality which
leads to better communication,
understanding, and ultimately good
results. Everyone can have a good,
decent, likable, and presentable
personality. Just dress sensibly well, smell
good, and be a little gentle and kind.

3 Deep Knowledge and a Another important characteristic of a

Great Education good teacher is his knowledge and own
education. There is a saying that 'a
teacher is only as good as his knowledge
is.' After all, he is doing a teacher's job,
which is to teach. If he himself lacks in the
knowledge of a certain subject that he
teaches, he is never going to make a
name for himself. So, sign up with only
that subjects which you have really good
expertise; and it is a moral duty too.
Otherwise, it is not worth it.

4 A Good Communicator One of the very important characteristics

of a good teacher is his communication
skills. He should be a very good speaker.
This characteristic will provide benefits in
several ways. For example: If his
communication skills are good, he can
convey his lectures with better skill and
results. If he is a good speaker, his class
strength increases automatically. People
love to hear a person who he can speak

English for Primary Teacher Education Study Program (Neli) 10

well enough. There is always a shortage
of good speakers in the world.

5 A Good Listener A part from being a good communicator,

a good teacher should also have the
characteristic of being an even better
listener. As there is Turkish proverb:"If
speaking is silver; then listening is gold."
Remember, a good listener will always
have many friends and fans. Because
people do not want to hear every time,
they need people who can listen to them
as well. And when a good teacher
develops this patient quality in himself, he
or she starts to become a great teacher.

6 A Good Sense of Humor A good teacher should also have the

quality and characteristic of having a
good sense of humor. It is a logical fact
that a person generally teaches the next
generation and as they are younger than
the professor, they are expected to have
more fun in the class too. So, a good
teacher is the one who can keep up with
his sense of humor, and with his strong
communication skills and personality, can
also maintain the discipline of the class.

7 Kindness The last but obviously one of the most

important characteristics to have in his
box of qualities: he should be a gentle,
kind, chivalrous, and benevolent person.
Students should love him, and when they
do love him, they idolize him. Then
ultimately, they will respect him, will do
the homework, and eventually will bring
greater outputs and results.

3. Teachers attitudes for children

There are some teachers attitudes for children:

First attitude : Demonstrating carry and kindness

English for Primary Teacher Education Study Program (Neli) 11

This attitude is regarding the personality of the teachers willingly share
emotions and feelings( enthusiasm, affection, patience, sadness,
disapproval) as well as sincere interest and care about their students.
Communication is also valued in classrooms and feelings are openly
expressed by both the children and teachers.
Second attitude : Sharing responsibility
This attitude focuses on the ability of the teacher to establish a shared
environment. An effective teacher must not be overly possessive or
need complete control of the children and environment. It is important
to allow students both responsibility and freedom within the classroom
community. Both the teachers and students need to contribute to the
learning environment for a relationship of closeness and acceptance to
develop.
Third attitude : Sensitively accepting diversity
This attitude deals with empathy and the importance of understanding
your students. Sensitivity, acceptance, and encouragement are critical
when approaching the issues associated with the diversity of the
children. Effective teachers understood their students without analyzing
or judging. They have the ability to make each child feel special by
verbally sharing individual compliments in front of the class.
Fourth attitude : Fostering individualized instruction
This attitude discusses the ability to provide meaningful learning
opportunities for all students.
Fifth attitude : Encouraging creativity
This attitude stresses the importance of stimulating the students
creativity. Effective teachers are open to students way of being
imaginative and also utilize many approaches to learning. Students
appreciate and are personally motivated when teachers design lessons
that consider their interests, skills and needs.

English for Primary Teacher Education Study Program (Neli) 12

4. The Students Learning Style

All children have unique learning styles.

Students gain strong benefits when their teachers
and Learning Coaches recognize their strengths
and weaknesses as learners. Howard Gardner, a
psychologist and professor of neuroscience at
Harvard, developed one theory in 1983.
Gardner defines intelligence not as an IQ but,
rather, as the skills that enable anyone to gain
new knowledge and solve problems.
Picture 2
Source: https://vienlly18.blogspot.co.id

Gardner proposed that there are several different types of

intelligences, or learning styles:

Table 2.3
The Students Learning Style
The Several of
No Students Learning Explanation
Style
1 Verbal-Linguistic People who possess this learning style learn best
(Word Smart) through reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
Verbal students absorb information by engaging
with reading materials and by discussing and
debating ideas.
2 Logical- Those who exhibit this type of intelligence learn
Mathematical by classifying, categorizing, and thinking
(Logic Smart) abstractly about patterns, relationships, and
numbers.
3 Visual-Spatial These people learn best by drawing or visualizing
(Picture Smart) things using the minds eye. Visual people learn
the most from pictures, diagrams, and other
visual aids.
4 Auditory-Musical Students who are music smart learn using rhythm
(Music Smart) or melody, especially by singing or listening to
music.

English for Primary Teacher Education Study Program (Neli) 13

5 Bodily-Kinesthetic Body-smart individuals learn best through touch
(Body Smart) and movement. These people are best at
processing information through the body.
Sometimes kinesthetic learners work best
standing up and moving rather than sitting still.
6 Interpersonal Those who are people smart learn through
(People Smart) relating to others by sharing, comparing, and
cooperating. Interpersonal learners can make
excellent group leaders and team players.
7 Intrapersonal (Self Intrapersonal-intelligent people learn best by
Smart) working alone and setting individual goals.
Intrapersonal learners are not necessarily shy;
they are independent and organized.
8 Naturalistic (Nature Naturalistic learn by working with nature.
Smart) Naturalistic students enjoy learning about living
things and natural events. They may excel in the
sciences and be very passionate about
environmental issues.

All of these learning styles indicate different ways of interacting with

the world. Everyone has some degree of each, but each person favors
certain learning styles. This is significant because when your child prefers
one learning style over another, it affects his or her success. Imagine that
your child is tackling a written essay or report. Have him or her consider
different methods by taking advantage of his or her strongest learning style:
- Logical-Mathematical. Use a graphic organizer such as a web or story
map to categorize and organize thoughts before writing. An outline is a
written version of a graphic organizer.
- Visual-Spatial. Draw or design the subject of the piece, and then write or
create the written draft. Details in the drawing will lead to details in the
writing.
- Auditory-Musical. Listen to background music to block out other,
distracting sounds.
