Chapter 6: Operation
The Trimble Harrier is an easy to use Laser Scanning System, but its success relies heavily on the
accurate planning of a flight mission.
Manual operation is only necessary for power on and off, for the control of storage devices and to
assist the pilot during the navigation.
The Trimble Harrier automatically starts the laser data recording before reaching the planned area
and stops after leaving it. The images are taken automatically at the planned position.

Before Start
Transportation covers of computer rack and sensor rack must be removed before usage of the
Trimble Harrier.
A flight plan is necessary when operating the Trimble Harrier. For flight planning each flight line
has to be defined with the trigger coordinates for each single image. See the documentation of
TrackAir software.

See the online help of the TrackAir software for more details.

The TrackAir software is installed on the POSTrack FCS. There is also a CD for installation of the
software on an office PC.
The default parameters for the Laser scanner are stored on the device itself. Details can be found
in the chapter: Riegl Scanner Parameter. All necessary software is installed on the HCC.
All mechanic and electric installation must be checked before each flight.
A hand written flight protocol should be started.

3
Standard procedure
The following procedures show how to start the system. If image data is not to be recorded, all
items describing the camera operation can be skipped.

The software Trimble Harrier Control (THC) are able to take the control over
the laser scanner.
The control for the laser scanner can only be taken by one software controller at
the same time. So it is necessary to ensure that only one connection is
established at the same time!
Disconnect of the POS AV controller does not disconnect the controlling of the
laser scanner (Software has to be closed)!

The software packages POS AV controller and Trimble Harrier Control are
able to take the control over the POS System.
The control for the POS System can only be taken by one software controller at
the same time. So it is necessary to ensure that only one connection is
established at the same time!

This power on procedure is the standard for flying with a pilot and an operator. In this procedure
everything is pre-planned and the start and the stop of all sensors are done automatically by the
software. The job for the operator is only to check that everything runs normal. If necessary the
operator is able to start and stop the laser data recording also manually.
The Flight Management System controls the image releases and also sends information about
entering or leaving the area of interest to the Harrier Control Software. The Harrier Control
software takes than care about the laser data recording.

Before powering on the Trimble Harrier, the installation (mechanically and

electrically) must be checked.

The following list describes the Power On sequence for the Trimble Harrier:

4
Prerequisites
1. Check of mechanical and electrical installation

a. Cables of sensor head must be connected to the computer rack.

b. Pilot display must be connected.
c. Operator display must be connected.
d. GNSS antenna must be connected.
e. External power must be connected.
2. Data storage devices

a. Empty PC-card for navigation data in Applanix slot (slot in PCS)

b. Empty removable disc for camera data locked in HCC slot
c. Empty removable discs for laser scanner locked in Data-recorder
3. Flight preparation
a. USB stick with flight plan and ScanScript in USB port of HCC
b. Check GPS ground station running
c. Place aircraft in open sky to be able to record GNSS information

Power-on procedure

1. Check all data storage devices are correctly insert and locked

2. Pilot put power up to the system (e.g. start engines)

3. Switch on MAIN fuse:

PCS and FCS start up automatically wait for GPS LED turning amber
Navigation data are automatically logged (depending on data processing GNSS data
have to be logged up to 30 min (without GPS Ground Station) for usual data
processing 3 min are enough)

4. Clear for taxi and take off

Store all lose equipment like displays etc.

5. Switch on the pilot display and connect to FCS (Shortcut)

6. Switch on HCC
HCC starts up

5
7. Switch on Laser scanner
Laser scanner and data recorder start up. Laser scanner starts with the last saved
parameters. It will take about two minutes.

8. Switch on camera
Camera starts up.

9. Start the Snap Shot Software on the HCC

10. Import flight plan through USB stick (Import flight plan)

11. Connect to FCS and load flight plan

12. Start the Trimble Harrier Control software (THC)

13. Wait for POS LED on THC software is green

14. Load laser and camera project file through USB stick (or Z:\config)

15. Start data recording manually to check everything is okay (before entering area)

16. Stop data recording again

17. Adjust camera parameters (e.g. ISO)

18. System is ready for the mission and for data recording in the area.

6
Operation during the Mission
During the mission the system operator must control and check several things:
Flight velocity: The aircraft must be flown with the planned speed over ground to
ensure the necessary delay time between the camera triggers.

Flight path: The flight path must be followed exactly to ensure the correct
image and laser overlapping.

Roll angle: During the recording, the roll angle must be small to avoid gaps
between the flight lines. While turning, banking must be smaller
than 25 in order not to lose satellite lock.

Data recording: The logging of data must be checked in the TrackAir software
during the flight lines. The trigger of each image is shown in the
flight path.

Environment: There must not be any clouds below the aircraft as the laser and
camera cannot penetrate them.
There should be no fog, snow or ice on ground these conditions
can reduce the sensibility of the laser detector.

After Project or Landing
After landing there is a procedure to switch off the Trimble Harrier.
The following list describes the sequence for the Power off procedure of the Trimble Harrier:
1. Shut down the Harrier Control Software.

2. Close the TrackAir software on HCC

Project 4. Switch off Laser Scanning System.

5. Press the HCC power button or shut down the HCC in the software (normal Windows
Shutdown.

6. Landing

7. Wait depending the data processing at least 3 min and then stop navigation data logging
on the PCS (press log Button two times).

8. Shutdown Pilot Display

9. Shutdown PCS and FCS

10. Switch off main fuse.

11. Remove data hard discs from the HCC and place them in transport boxes for data
processing. Insert empty discs for next flight.

12. Remove the Laser data hard discs and place them in transport boxes for data processing.
Insert empty discs for next flight.

13. Remove the navigation data PC-Cards and place them in transport boxes for data
processing. Insert empty PC-Card for next flight.

14. Check the mechanical and electrical installation.

15. Prepare everything for the next flight.

16. Data Backup

17. Coverage Check
