Learning I can explain the difference between Carbon-12 and Carbon-14

Target I can determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in an isotope of
an element.
Unit 2 : Atoms, elements and the periodic table.
Goal: The student will demonstrate
1 ways of think and acting inherent in the practice of science. The student will
use language and instruments of science to collect, organize, interpret, calculate
and communicate information
4 the ability to use scientific skills and processes to explain composition and
CLG indicator
interactions of matter in the world in which we live.
Indicator: The student will
4.1.1.3 atomic number, mass number
4.1.1.4 isotopes - calculate p, n, e
4.1.1.5 atomic mass (weighted average)
Agenda 1. Do Now
2. Bean isotope discovery activity
3. Isotope Notes
4. Isotope Practice
5. Exit Ticket

Lesson Description of Instruction Instructional

Component Framework
Entering the Students will pick up their warm-up sheets for their folders. T1, T7
Classroom and
Warm-up 1. Calculate the number of protons, neutrons and
electrons in the following elements:
-Oxygen
-Chlorine
-Hydrogen
- Lithium

Review Review: Students will complete the top portion of their notes T3, T5
sheet, which is a review of the objectives learned yesterday.
Class will check answers to ensure all students understand
before moving onto activity.
Students will take notes on isotopes and proper isotope
notation.
An element is defined by its atomic number, i.e., the
number of protons in the nucleus.
Mass is the sum of the protons and neutrons in the
nucleus.

Explore Students will be given 4 bags with different numbers of beans T6

that represent the protons (white beans), neutrons (red beans)
and electrons (black beans) in an element. Each bag has a
different number of beans.

SW counts the beans in each bag and will complete the table
with the numbers of bean they counted.

Each group will receive four bags of isotopes. Each

group will work together to count the number of
protons and neutrons in each bag. Students will work
together to calculate the atomic mass and atomic
number of the elements and answer question 1
together.

Student will then use guiding questions in order to write their

own definition of an atom.

Students should arrive at the definition that an isotope is two

atoms of the same element with different number of
neutrons.

Class will go over answers to the questions. TW call on a

different group to answer each question. Each group will
share their definition of an isotope.
