computer and how to configure the Windows firewall for NTP rule.

1 Install and Configure NTP

Server on an acquisition
computer

1.1 Prerequisites (please refer to

your IT before making any change)
Any previously installed NTP Client/Server software should be uninstalled prior to the
installation and configuration of Meinberg NTP Server.
The installation must be performed as Administrator.

1.2 Instructions
Run the Meinberg installation for the NTP server software (ntp-4.2.6p5@london-o-lpv-
win32-setup.exe).
Select your destination folder in the Choose Install Location view.

Click on Next.
Select components to install in the Choose Components view.

Click on Next.
In the Network Time Protocol Setup: Configuration Options window, select the location
of the configuration file and other settings of interest. We recommend to select Add local
clock as a last resort reference, Stratum and set the value to 6.

Click on Next.
A warning message appears No pool server and no other server specified () Do you
want to use this configuration?

Click on Yes (necessary to work on a closed network).

Select your NTP Service Settings in the Network Time Protocol Setup: NTP Service
Options window.

Click on Next.
In the Network Time Protocol Setup: NTP Service Account window, enter the ID and
password to be used to run the NTP service.

Click on Finish to complete the installation.

2 Configure Windows Firewall

on acquisition computer for
NTP
The Windows Firewall needs to be configured to allow NTP communication on an acquisition
computer. To that end, the port 123 must be open for UDP (User Datagrams Protocol)
communication as described below.

2.1 Instructions
Click on Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Advanced settings. The Windows
Firewall with Advanced Security window opens.
In the left panel, click on Inbound Rules. It displays in the middle panel all firewall rules
already in application on the computer for inbound traffic.
In the right panel, click on New Rule.

The New Inbound Rule Wizard opens, allowing to define the new firewall rule.

In the Rule Type content panel, select Port to create a firewall rule for UDP
communication on port 123.

Click on Next.
In the Protocol and Ports content panel, select UDP and Specific local ports, and enter
123.

Click on Next.

In the Action content panel, click on Allow the connection.

Click on Next.
In the Profile content panel select conditions for which the rule applies. We recommend
selecting Domain and Private.

Click on Next.
In the Name content panel, specify the name of the rule and enter a description
(optional).

Click on Finish.
In the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security window, click on Refresh in the Actions
panel. Check the Inbound Rules list has been updated with the new open port.
