How to become an Architect Register with the Architects Association having jurisdiction.

Registration Requirements = Education + Experience + Examination + Evidence + Fees

Education Degree or Syllabus certified by CACB. Automatic for Dalhousie M.Arch. grads

Experience Obtain an employer and a mentor who are both Architects in the jurisdiction. Apply
for Intern membership. Log 3720 hours divided into specific areas:

1. Programming
2. Site and Environmental Analysis
3. Schematic Design
4. Engineering Systems Coordination
5. Building Cost Analysis
6. Code Research
7. Design Development
8. Construction Documents
9. Specifications and Materials Research
10. Document Checking and Coordination
11. Bidding and Contract Negotiations
12. Construction Phase - Office
13. Construction Phase Site
14. Project Management
15. Office Management

These must be documented and verified by employer, signed by mentor, submitted


to and approved by Provincial IAP committee in blocks of 900 1000 hrs

Examination 1. General - Apply to write after 1860 hours of approved experience


ExAC - Recognized across Canada, written once a year
ARE - Recognized across Canada and in the USA, written any time
2. Province specific typically after general exams
Sometimes written, sometimes oral
Local knowledge, Acts, Regulations, Code of Conduct

Evidence Good Character (no criminal convictions etc), References

Fees - NSAA Intern Member $125/year + hst, max 10 years


NSAA Member $795/year + hst, continuous
