Welcome to the Family!
We have definitely had a lot of exciting
things going on throughout the year, but
by far the most exciting news is that our
family got even larger with the addition of
two new veterinarians to our "paw"some
family! In case you haven't gotten the
chance to meet them just yet, we'd like to
introduce you to Dr. Kana Noda and Dr.
Barr Hadar!
Dr. Kana Noda was born and raised in
Japan before moving to New York, and
then later to Michigan to attend the
University of Michigan for her
undergraduate studies. She then attended
veterinary school in England, where she
earned her doctorate in Veterinary
Medicine from the University of
London. Dr. Noda then relocated to Las
Vegas, Nevada where she has been an
associate veterinarian at a private
practice for the past 11 years!
Dr. Noda is fluent in Japanese and very
well-rounded in her expertise. Her
primary focus is providing wellness
services for dogs and cats, as well as
exceptional client service for their human
families. Did we happen to mention that
she also provides medical care for certain
exotics too? Her repertoire includes

moving to Hawaii as a child. He
graduated from Kalani High School, got
his undergraduate degree from Cal Poly,
and then went on to attend Colorado

More Than Just a b. Bones, can actually pose a life-

Thanksgiving Feast
When it comes to the holidays, who are we
to deny ANYONE of the joy and pleasure
thats felt when youre able to include your
furry family member(s) in everything you
celebrate, especially the wonderful feasts!
BUT, there are quite a few Thanksgiving
embers that are just waiting to ignite if
proper cautions are not taken seriously.
Unfortunately for us, the Thanksgiving
holiday season tends to be one of our
busiest times. And although we always
enjoy seeing you and your pets, we would
like to share some tips and information
with you in hopes that we can keep you
out of the clinic this holiday season!
1. Resist the temptation to share
your Thanksgiving feast! Feeding
your pet even small amounts of
turkey, gravy, stuffing and other fatty,
high calorie foods can actually be very
detrimental to their health. Not only
could it give them uncomfortable belly
aches and diarrhea, it could even
result in several days of
hospitalization.
2. Do not give a dog a bone!
Contrary to popular belief, dogs really
should not be given bones to enjoy.
a. Dog jaws are very powerful, but
their teeth are still just teeth. So,
the likeliness of a tooth breaking
while chewing a bone is still
considerably high. Fracturing a
tooth can cause pain and
discomfort, often times remedied
by an expensive extraction or root
canal procedure.

been known to get lodged inside
mouths, causing punctures or
lacerations which can lead to
discomfort and possible infection
and worse yet, pain. In some
cases, bones have even become
obstructed in a way that it causes
airways to be compromised
making it difficult to breathe.
3. The risk of going raw . . . Be
careful. Consumption of raw or
undercooked foods do pose a health
concern. Just as with humans, we
also worry about salmonella that can
be found on raw or undercooked
turkey and raw eggs.
4. No will power at all?? Well, if you
simply cannot help yourself and you
MUST give in to the temptations, then
here are some tips:
a. Give very small pieces of
boneless, skinless, fat-less
turkey breast. One thing that
we forget is how small our dogs
are compared to us.
Proportionately speaking, for a
medium-sized dog, a piece of
turkey the size of half of our palm
is equivalent in size to a piece of
turkey the size of a 10-inch plate
to us humans. Remember: Its
the excitement that they feel
when we feed our food is more in
the joy they take in sharing
something with their human
family that they love. Whether
you give a pencil eraser-tip size
piece or a piece the size of half
your palm . . . It doesnt matter
to them as much as it matters to
us.
b. Reserve a small amount of
foods BEFORE you load on all
the yummy goodness. Mashed
potatoes or sweet potatoes can be
given safely to your pet in small
amounts as long as its PLAIN.
You could even do the same with
vegetables like green beans or
carrots, as well as cooked rice or
a small piece of a plain bread
bun.
c. Gravy on the side, please. A
really fun thing to do for your pet
is to smear a bit of gravy onto a
food puzzle toy or another
favorite toy. This not only gives
them the taste of your gravy, it
will also keep them distracted for
a bit so that you can enjoy your
Thanksgiving feast without feeling
guilty that your pet doesnt have
the exact same plate as you!
Most importantly, the whole point of the
Thanksgiving holiday is to give thanks to
and celebrate all of the important and
special people (and animals) in your life.
Pets in Hawaii especially, are a focal point
in many families and should be included in
everything we celebrate. Hopefully these
tips will help to keep your pet safe this
Thanksgiving holiday . . . and help you and
your family celebrate and enjoy without
the guilt.

Not only is Christmas one of the happiest
times of the year for a lot of people, it can
also be the most stressful. Of course, to
each person it is what it is, but to our cats
. . . especially the young, rambunctious,
playful ones, its simply the most
wonderful time of the year! So many
things to amuse themselves with! But for
us, so many things for us to worry about
for them! Here are some things to be
mindful of and helpful tips to keep your
kitties safe during the Christmas season:
1. Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas
Tree! What a great climbing post
you are! Cat parents of the young
and sprightly will attest to this, we
promise. Although not the most
common problem well hear about,
just something to keep in mind when
you are securing your tree this year.
Make sure that its anchored well in
your tree stand to avoid accidental
tipping or falling.
2. Silk . . . Its Whats for . . .
Decorations! One of the most
common household plants found
coming into the fall and winter
holidays are Poinsettias. The sap of
the poinsettia can be quite irritating to
the GI tract (most commonly), as well

ulcers and worse yet, effects to the
liver and the bodys ability to clot
blood resulting in bleeding disorders
and anemia.
Although tinsel adds a certain flair to
a Christmas Tree, consider the risks
involved when it comes to the safety
of your pets. As cat lovers know,
cats are notorious for going after
anything resembling string, anything
shiny, anything that moves basically.
And as fun as that may be to them, it
can also be very dangerous for them.
Ingesting even one strand, not even
a whole one at that, can be deadly
for them. The tinsel becomes whats
known as a linear foreign body and
can cause an obstruction in the
intestinal tract. This can be a life-
threating emergency requiring
immediate surgery to remove the
linear foreign body.
5. The Dangers of a Beautiful Bow.
For the same reasons as tinsel on a
tree, ribbons and bows can also
become linear foreign bodies. It is a
good idea to keep those presents
somewhere that your cat cannot get
to them. Its always better to be
safe, than sorry.
Christmas is supposed to be whats
arguably the best time of the year . . . fun
and festive. Its the season to give . . .
Not worry. Keeping these main points in
mind, you can pet-proof even Christmas!
With a few easy precautious practices,
you can be a super pet parent and keep
them safe while you and your entire
family, humans and furries, continue to
enjoy the holidays!
