Literature Review
Article 1
Dekker, V., Nauta, M. H., Mulder, E. J., Timmerman, M. E., & de Bildt, A. (2014). A
randomized controlled study of a social skills training for preadolescent children with
autism spectrum disorders: generalization of skills by training parents and
teachers? BMC Psychiatry, 14, 189.

The research article discusses improving social communication in children who have
autism spectrum disorder. My proposed behavior intervention plan is to improve social
communication in my roommates boyfriend, however he does not have autism. The article
matches my plan because they are both humans. Even though the article focuses on social skills
training in children who have autism, the interventions would still be effective to use on people
who do not have a disability. During this intervention, any negative behavior is ignored when
possible.
The intervention in this article was so effective because the children were taught social
instructions through direct instruction, role-play, positive feedback, and observation, each of
those sessions were recorded. Any negative behavior that the children displayed was ignored
while the therapist analyzed behavior to determine what will elicit positive behavior. I will use
this approach in my behavior intervention by constantly giving positive feedback to my subject.
One major limitation to the intervention as cited by the author is that only the first
observations/assessment is blind, the other assessments are not. This would not affect my
intervention because no assessment is blind, I picked the subject.
Article 2
Adeniyi, Y. C., & Omigbodun, O. O. (2016). Effect of a classroom-based intervention on the
social skills of pupils with intellectual disability in Southwest Nigeria. Child and
Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health, 10(1), 29.

The research article has some of the same components as my behavior intervention plan.
The article uses people who have mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. My proposed
intervention plan uses my roommates boyfriends so in both interventions they are humans. The
focus of the intervention in the article is to increase social communication which is the same goal
as my proposed plan.
The intervention described in the articles utilized a curriculum called Explore Social
Skills. After that, the article discusses statistics that prove the intervention is really effective.
During the intervention they used a likert-type scale along with other assessments to rate the
occurrence of the six different behaviors that are described in the article. The author cites that
during the study positive feedback was used as a consequence. During my intervention I will
implement positive feedback when he has a conversation with us. One limitation of this article is
that only one person left the facility while the twenty-nine other people who participated in the
intervention lived in the facility. To minimize this threat during my intervention I will only have
one person to focus on, and he does not live here.
Article 3
Kamps, D., Thiemann-Bourque, K., Heitzman-Powell, L., Schwartz, I., Rosenberg, N., Mason,
R., & Cox, S. (2015). A Comprehensive Peer Network Intervention to Improve Social
Communication of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Randomized Trial in
Kindergarten and First Grade. Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 45(6),
18091824.

This research article focuses on improving social communication in people who have
autism. My proposed plan involves improving social communication in a person, my plan and
the research article have the same components because they both involve changing behavior in
humans. Another similar component that both interventions had is that they both involve
improving social communication.
The intervention described in this research article was so effective because it networked
peers together to work on improving social communication. The author cites that during the
interventions, teacher used positive feedback as consequences. I would be able to use positive
feedback during my behavior intervention by giving positive remarks to my roommates
boyfriend every time he holds a conversation with me. The author cites one major limitation of
the intervention is that the peer perception was not measured. I will minimize this threat by not
involving other people, I will only involve my subject.
