I. Discuss in 100 words any particular theory in International Relations & Politics which could best
explain the shifting of US Foreign Policy form ISOLATIONISM during the Pre-WW I to TOTAL
PARTICIPATION in World Affairs after the end of the WW II? (30 points)

A particular theory for shifting of US foreign policy from Isolationism is International liberalism. Because
of the events like Great depression ad tragic losses in World war I, America tends to make their policy
isolated that time. It means one country from the affairs of the other nations by declining to enter
alliances, economic commitments and international agreements. However, US could no longer be
isolationist and they have joined United Nation and NATO. Theyve ensured its role as a world power.
They have become a Empire of Librety and the growing role if the US in international trade displayed
their urge to build and explore new markets and they are now one of the power player in the world.

II. Discuss and present two events in history, one ancient and one contemporary, where the prestige of
the theory of political realism was built on. Give a specific example of the parallelism or point
convergence of these events as mentioned by their respective proponents in each specific era. (30
points)

The two events in history, one ancient and one contemporary event are Peloponessian war where the
theory of Political realism takes place. In history of peloponessian war, one if the argument of
Thucydides is, that the strong should rule the weak, as they have the power to do so. And for the
contemporary event, the best event is the world war I and II. Morgenthau said international politics is a
struggle for power because of the basic human lust for power. The parallel example for the two events
were, Peloponessian war and world war I and II shows that the every individual as being engaged in a
perpetual quest for power.

III. Select and discuss 3 elements of national power and rank them in their degree of importance in so
far as the conflict over the territories in the West Philippine sea is concerned. (20 points)

The conflict over the territories in the West Philippine Sea worries most of Filipino people. However,
when the 3 elements of National Power is concerned, we have the Military Preparedness, National
Morale and the Quality of Diplomacy. First is the Military preparedness and as a citizen of the
Philippines, I am aware that the Military Preparedness of our country is not that strong compared to the
other countries. In terms of this element of power, once the conflict has risen and war will emerge, the
side of Philippines might be at stake. Second would be the National morale, High morale means a
healthy frame of mind characterised by fidelity to cause and it depends upon a combination of
circumstances and the quality of leadership, and can be subject to frequent and sometimes sudden
fluctuations. The national morale of the Philippines would play a great role in this conflict because
Filipinos are known for being strong, optimistic and would fight for the sake of their country. Third one is
the Quality of Diplomacy, not long time ago when the team of the Philippines won the argument in the
International court in the Hague where they displayed a good sense of diplomacy. Diplomacy of high
quality can bring the ends and means of foreign policy into harmony with the available resources of
national power. It can trap the hidden sources of national strength and transform these fully and
squarely into political realities.

IV. Choose any current global political issue and propose an explanation of the issue reflecting on your
theoretical position/ standpoint. (20 points)

The current global political issue that caught my attention is when North Korea continues their activity
in terms of nuclear power, my standpoint on this situation is that we should not be aggressive and we
need more diplomacy talks. Once we provoke the side of North Korea, then we will get another World
war.
