Ganador del premio a Mejor Director en 2012
por Fango, y ya un asiduo de la Competencia
Argentina del Festival (su ltima pelcula, El
sacrificio de Neuhen Puyelli, compiti el ao
pasado), Jos Celestino Campusano vuelve
a Mar del Plata con El azote, la historia de un
asistente social que lidia con los problemas
de sus alumnos (y los propios) en un colegio
en esa zona de Bariloche que no sale en
las postales. Es un drama antropolgico y
autocrtico, dice Campusano, quien, como
siempre, prefiere la primera persona del
plural cada vez que habla de la realizacin
de una de sus pelculas. Ese nosotros incluye
tanto a su productora Cinebruto como a las
personas que pone delante de la cmara.
La motivacin para rodar esta historia es
la misma que nos ha llevado a abordar
proyectos como Vikingo [24 Festival], Placer
y martirio y tantos otros. Se trata de plasmar
los cdigos de convivencia de un estrato
determinado sumando el potencial y el
compromiso de ese mismo entorno, asegura.
En este caso, es un entorno repleto de
dificultades y barreras. Climticas, sociales
y, claro, polticas. Un contexto que, segn
Campusano, influye muchsimo a la hora
de plasmar un relato cinematogrfico. El
fro all es con piso de tierra, quince grados
bajo cero, y en muchos casos con escaso
abrigo y con muchas dificultades para
ascender socialmente, cuenta. En ese mundo
castigado, surcado por la marginalidad y
una violencia latente, El azote se concentra
en el mundo interior de sus personajes y sus
mtodos de supervivencia.

Winner of the Best Director award in 2012 for
Mud, and already a regular at the Argentine
Competition of the Festival (his latest film,
Nehuen Puyellis Sacrifice, competed last
year), Jos Celestino Campusano returns to
Mar del Plata with The Scourge, the story of
a social assistant dealing with the problems
of his students (as well as his own) at a school
in that area of Bariloche that doesnt appear
on postcards. It is an anthropological, self-
critical drama, says Campusano who, as
always, prefers the first person plural every
time he talks about the making of one of
his films. That us includes his production de una pelcula. As empez todo, cuenta la

film this story is the same one that has driven
us to embark on projects like Viking [24th
Festival], Martyrdom and Pleasure and so
many others. Its all about expressing the codes
of coexistence of a certain stratum in addition
to the potential and commitment of that very
environment, he states.
In this case, its an environment filled with
difficulties and barriers. Climatic, social and,
of course, political. A context that, according
to Campusano, is highly influential when
capturing a cinematic tale. The cold there is
on a dirt floor, fifteen degrees below zero, and
in many cases with scarce clothing to warm up
and many difficulties in moving up the social
ladder, he tells. In this punished world, pierced

Todo empez en Bogoshorts, un festival
colombiano de cortos donde Tamae
Garateguy ganadora de esta misma
competencia con Pompeya (25 Festival) fue
jurado. Me vi completamente conmovida
por un cortometraje documental que se
llama Letting You Go (Dejndote ir) y que cuenta
la historia de una joven danesa que quiere
morir y pide a su familia que la acompae
en el proceso, y el padre es quien est con
ella hasta el final. La muerte y el amor
como temas rondaban en mi cabeza sin
darme paz. Y eso es lo que me pasa cuando
necesito transmitir un sentimiento a travs

El resultado es un thriller psicolgico que
deviene en historia de amor: un encuentro

pulsin. Para m la muerte es el gran final,
y la sexualidad se presenta ante ella como
la gran energa vital, describe la directora.
La sexualidad irradia infinitas posibilidades,
puede ser una fuerza motora, creadora,
destructora, salvadora. Puedo decir que en
todas mis pelculas busqu imprimir una
energa tantica y sexual fuerte y agresiva.

It all started in Bogoshorts, a Colombian short-
film festival where Tamae Garateguy winner
of this very competition for Pompeya (25th
Festival) was a jury member. I was completely
moved by a documentary short called Letting
You Go, which tells the story of a young Danish
woman who wants to die and asks her family to
accompany her in the process, and its the father
who remains with her until the end. Thoughts
of death and love as subjects never left me. And
that is what happens to me when I need to
transmit a feeling through a film. Thats how it
all began, says the director, who was part of the
30th Festival with All Night Long and UPA
Giralt and Camila Toker).
The result is a psychological thriller that
becomes a love story: a casual encounter
between a man and a woman, both with
their lives downhill, that turns into an intense
encounter that mixes desire, death and extreme
sexual practices with a subjacent detective plot.
Starring Martina Garello and Rodrigo Guirao
Daz, Until You Untie Me is pure drive. To me,
death is the grand finale, and sexuality stands in
front of it as the greatest vital energy, describes
the director. Sexuality irradiates endless
possibilities, it can be a driving force, a creative
one, a destructive one, or it can save you. I can
say that in all my films I aim to imprint a strong
and aggressive Tanathic and sexual energy. In
Until You Untie Me, we aim for something
even more dreamlike, or out of a sexual fantasy.

Baronesa
La crudeza se lleva bien con la comedia; eso parece querer
decir Juliana Antunes en su pera prima. La vida cotidiana
(y con pocos recursos) de dos chicas brasileas se ilumina
con destellos de humor. Baronesa es un documental que
naci a partir de una inquietud por descifrar los destinos
de los colectivos que salan del centro de Belo Horizonte y
se perdan por su periferia. En particular, uno que llevaba
el mismo nombre de la directora: Juliana. La pelcula,
premiada en Marsella y Valdivia, es el registro de seis
meses de filmacin de un grupo de personajes que
aspiran cocana desde un celular y juegan con un chancho
en medio de la selva. Montada por Affonso Uchoa,
codirector de Arbia (2017), la pelcula logra llevarnos
delicadamente all donde todo sucede.

Crudeness gets along with company; that is what Juliana
Antunes appears to say in his directorial debut. The everyday
life (with few resources) of two Brazian girls is illuminated with
flashes of humor. Baronesa is a documentary that is born from
a concern for deciphering the destinations of the buses that
leave from downtown Belo Horizonte and disappear into the
outskirts. One in particular bears the directors name: Juliana.
The film awarded in Marseille and Valdivia captures six
months of filming a group of characters who snort cocaine from
a cell phone and play with a pig in the middle of the jungle. Edited
by Affonso Uchoa, co-director of Araby (2017), the film succeeds
in drawing us delicately to where everything takes place.

Al desierto The First Lap

To the Desert

Una mujer, un hombre y su larga travesa
patagnica nutren el misterio en Al desierto,
la nueva pelcula de Ulises Rosell. Julia es
empleada de casino y Gwynfor es operario
petrolero. Cruzan sus vidas casi por azar y,
en busca de un futuro prometido para ella,
surcan el agreste territorio sureo argentino
no sin dificultades geogrficas y, sobre
todo, emocionales. El vnculo inicialmente
amistoso deviene en una compleja relacin
de sometimiento que transcurre en medio
del viento, la tierra y la inmensidad de un
territorio hostil. La pelcula es una travesa
pesadillesca en el paisaje rido de la
Patagonia, un espacio que Ulises Rosell
utiliza con el mismo poder cinematogrfico
de un western, con la inclemencia del sol
y la oscuridad de la noche azotando a los
protagonistas. Inspirada en las historias de las
cautivas del siglo XIX, Al desierto plantea una
relacin que encierra un misterio, y que ir
cambiando de forma a medida que el polvo
va cubriendo las ropas de la pareja (Valentina
Bassi y Jorge Sesn llenan la pantalla con
intensidad). Rosell consigue transmitir la
inclemencia del ambiente, en planos en los
que la desolacin patagnica se siente en
la piel y la sequedad en la boca. El resultado
es una road movie a pie, una aventura de
supervivencia adems de un tour de force
psicolgico, en la que los personajes,
encerrados afuera, no tienen nada que
perder. Es el tipo de propuestas que me
hacen meterme en una sala de cine por una
cuestin de climas, escenarios y silencios.
A woman, a man and a long journey across the
Patagonia fuel the mystery in Ulises Rosells
latest film To the Desert. Julia works at a casino
and Gwynfor is an oil worker. They meet almost
by chance and plow through the wild Southern
territory in search of her promised future, but
face with some geographical and, above all,
emotional hardships. Their bond, friendly at
first, becomes a complex relationship based on
submission right in the middle of the wind, the
dirt and the immensity of a hostile land. The
film is a nightmarish journey through the arid
landscape of Patagonia, a space Ulises Rosell uses
with the cinematic power of a western, as the
inclement sun and the darkness of night ravage
the protagonists. Inspired by the stories of captive
women from the 19th century, To the Desert
lays out a mysterious relationship that will shift
shape as the main characters (Valentina Bassi
and Jorge Sesn, who fill up the screen with
maxed-out intensity) get their clothes covered
in dust. Rosell manages to convey the inclemency
of the environment in shots in which you can
feel the Patagonian desolation on your skin and
its dryness in your mouth. The result is a road
movie on foot, an adventure of survival as
well as a psychological tour de force where the
characters, locked outside, have nothing to lose.
This type of proposal is what that lures into a
theater, looking for atmospheres, sceneries and
silences, says the director.
Su-hyeon es un aspirante a artista que,
resignado, se dedica a dar clases. Su novia Ji-
young tambin es una empleada y viven juntos
desde hace seis aos. Pero un da la tranquilidad
de sus vidas se interrumpe cuando Ji-young
revela que est embarazada. Las visitas a
sus respectivas familias, con sus diferentes
realidades sociales, enfrentar a la joven pareja
a la posibilidad y al temor de transformarse
(ellos tambin) en una familia. Entre reproches,
problemas del pasado que nunca fueron
resueltos y la incertidumbre sobre un futuro
que se acerca inexorablemente, la joven pareja
realizar un viaje que los dejar al comienzo
de una nueva vida. La secuencia final, filmada
durante el momento en que el pueblo coreano
tomaba las calles pidiendo por la renuncia
de su presidente Park Geun-hye (hechos
ocurridos en el otoo de 2016), demuestra no
solo la cercana de la pelcula, sino el talento
de su director para unir lo ntimo con lo social
y demostrar que el cine es una poderosa
herramienta para hablar de la realidad. El film,
ganador de la Mencin Especial del Jurado
Joven y del Premio al Mejor Cineasta Emergente
en Locarno 2017, supuso en el festival suizo
Swiss festival. Even beyond its clear reference to
un soplo de aire fresco y reparador: incluso
ms all de una clara referencia con el cine de
Hong Sang-soo, el discurso y la esttica de The
First Lap es singular y original por sus planos,
el acompasado seguimiento de la cmara
cuando los personajes caminan, y las escenas
de discusiones alrededor de una mesa con
platos a nuestros ojos exticos.
Su-hyeon is an aspiring artist who, resigned to his
fate, makes a living as a teacher. His girlfriend, Ji-
young, also has a job just to make a living. They
have been living together for six years, until the
peacefulness of their lives is interrupted when Ji-
young reveals that she is pregnant. Their visits
to their respective families, from different social
backgrounds, confront the young couple with
their possibility and fears of their becoming a
family. Between reproaches over past problems
that were never resolved and the uncertainty
of a future that is relentlessly coming closer, the
young couple takes a trip that will leave them at
the beginning of a new life. The final sequence,
filmed at the moment when the Korean people
took to the streets demanding the resignation
of President Park Geun-hye (which took place
in the fall of 2016), demonstrates not only the
immediacy of the film, but also the talent of its
director for uniting the intimate with the social,
and demonstrating that fiction is always the best
tool for talking about reality. The film, which won
the Special Mention of the Young Jury and the
award for Best Emerging Filmmaker at Locarno
2017, proved to be a breath of fresh air at the
the cinema of Hong Sang-soo, the discourse and
aesthetics of The First Lap is unique and original
for its shots, the rhythmic following of the camera
when the characters walk, and the scenes with
arguments around a table filled with exotic to
our eyes food plates.

La leyenda de Orlie Antoine de Tounens aquel abogado
francs que, con el apoyo del pueblo mapuche, se
proclam rey de la Araucana y la Patagonia a mediados
del siglo XIX es encarada por el director chileno Niles
Atallah, quien sigue un camino ms que interesante, lejos
de las convenciones de cualquier biopic y trazando una
notoria lnea que conecta aquella poca con la actualidad.
Por un lado, se plantea una reconstruccin histrica
apelando a los principales hechos ocurridos; por el otro,
se adentra en el juicio que le hacen posteriormente al
protagonista por rebelarse ante las autoridades militares.
Ganadora del Gran Premio del Jurado en Rotterdam, Rey
construye una poderosa puesta en escena dando cuenta
de diversas tcnicas y construyendo una dinmica en la
que intervienen diferentes voces.

The legend of Orlie Antoine de Tounesns that French
lawyer who proclaimed himself king of the Araucana and
the Patagonia in the mid-19th century with the support
of the Mapuche people is approached by director Niles
Atallah. He follows quite an interesting path, far from
the conventions of any biopic, and tracing a clear line that
connects that time with the present. On one hand, theres
a historical reconstruction based on the main events that
took place; on the other, it depicts the trial the protagonist
goes through afterwards for rising against the military
authorities. Winner of the Jurys Grand Prix at Rotterdam,
King builds up a powerful mise-en-scne using different
techniques and building a dynamic in which different voices
take part.

Films that Shook the World
Concebida originalmente para celebrar
el dcimo aniversario de la revolucin
bolchevique de 1917, Octubre, la tercera
pelcula de Sergei Eisenstein (a veces titulada
Diez das que estremecieron al mundo, por el
relato del periodista americano John Reed),
tuvo problemas desde el comienzo. Su retrato
al estilo documental de los eventos que
sucedieron en Petrogrado inmediatamente
despus de la cada del Zar fue criticado por
su irona y su humor. En la maana del da
de su estreno, el 7 de noviembre de 1927,
Eisenstein recibi la orden de eliminar toda
imagen que retratara al purgado Len Trotsky,
y se dice que Stalin mismo revis la obra
para asegurarse de que no hayan quedado
imgenes de su rival. Cuatro meses despus,
cuando la versin revisada finalmente se
proyect, su irona y humor no tuvieron
xito, y el film recibi crticas por obsceno y
simblicamente sobrecargado. Condenado

Originally intended to mark the 10th
Anniversary of the triumph of the Bolshevik In the hundredth anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, and almost ninety years
revolution of 1917, Sergei Eisensteins third after its first release, October is screened in Mar del Plata in its 2012 restored version,
feature film October (sometimes titled, Ten made by experts in Eisensteins work.
Days That Shook the World, after American
journalist John Reeds account) immediately
encountered problems. Its documentary-
style depiction of the events in Petrograd
immediately after the fall of the czar was
criticized for its irony and humor. On the
morning of its intended premiere on November
7, 1927, Eisenstein was ordered to remove all
footage depicting Leon Trotsky, who had just
been purged, and Stalin himself reportedly
examined the work print to make sure no
images of his rival remained. Four months
later, when the revised version finally screened,
its irony and humor were unsuccessful,
and the film was criticized as obscene and
symbolically overloaded. Condemned for
aestheticism and formalism, it was banned
for nearly 40 years.
In 1966, years after Eisensteins death in 1948,
a re-edited version was released, with music by
Dmitri Shostakovich. It was not until 2012,
in part thanks to the painstaking efforts of
Eisenstein scholar Naum Kleiman, that a
restoration and reconstruction appeared,
far closer to Eisensteins original design, and
with much of the Trotsky footage restored.
In addition, the original strikingly percussive
score composed by Edmund Meisel for the films
premiere in Germany in 1928, was restored,
and on the copy to be screened at the Mar del
Plata Film Festival it is performed by the Berlin
Radio Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by

Las pelculas de mi vida
The Films in My Life
El Delegado General del Festival de Cannes y director del Instituto Lumire volvi
a Argentina con varios regalos bajo el brazo: la pelcula Lumire! LAventure com-
mence, la inminente Semana de Cine del Festival de Cannes en Buenos Aires, y la
edicin argentina de su libro Seleccin oficial, la primera fuera de Francia.
Qu nos puede adelantar del libro?
No es un libro de cine, es un libro de un
hombre que trabaja en el cine y tiene
dos trabajos: uno en Lyon, en el Instituto
Lumire, donde naci el cinematgrafo, y
otro en Cannes, que tambin es la oficina
en Pars. Es el diario que a m me hubiera
gustado leer pero de los aos 60. Este libro
puede ser utilizado dentro de treinta aos;
me encantara, porque es una manera de
describir un mundo que no es solamente
mi mundo, es el nuestro, de la gente que
cada ao trabaja por la gloria del cine, por
el amor al cine, por hacerlo y mostrarlo.
Pero, como digo, no es totalmente un
libro de cine porque es tambin un libro
muy personal. Adems este ao pasaron
muchas cosas afuera del cine.
Si este libro les puede servir a futuras
generaciones para aprender sobre el
Festival de Cannes, qu aprendi usted
en todos estos aos a cargo de l?
En primer lugar, cuando Gilles Jacob me
llam para pedirme que trabaje con l,
mi primera respuesta fue que no. Porque
estaba bien en Lyon, haciendo muchas
cosas por los hermanos Lumire y por la
cinefilia. Estaba y estoy enamorado de

cual tengo mucha confianza, y cada ao hay
nuevos nombres en el mapa. Ese es un signo
de buena salud. Yo estoy aqu por el libro,
por la pelcula, por la Semana de Cannes
en Buenos Aires, pero tambin para ver a
productores y directores.

Cmo fue el proceso de rescate de la
pelcula?
La telenovela errante es el resultado de un trabajo
de investigacin realizado por la cineasta
chilena-portea Valeria Sarmiento (viuda de
Ruiz) y la productora de cine Poetastros, que
fundamos y dirigimos Galut Alarcn (cineasta
y montajista) y yo. Tomamos como eje dos
materiales filmados por Ral Ruiz entre 1990
y 1991 en Chile. En 2017 seguimos la pista de
estos materiales, y encontramos solo una parte
de los negativos en Chile y otra en positivos en
la Duke University. Completamos lo extraviado
en los rollos perdidos de negativos y el sonido
magntico de La telenovela errante por un lado,
y de Basta la palabra por el otro. La telenovela
errante es una pelcula fundamentalmente de
montaje, construida con la unin de partes;
solo haba un guion de dilogos y un texto
breve. Entonces el mayor logro de estrenar
esta pelcula hoy est en convertir el material
que misteriosamente Ral dej inacabado.
Es un film de Valeria Sarmiento que juega a
hacer una resurreccin de su marido, lo que se
puede definir como un acto de amor diablico
y chamnico del arte cinematogrfico de hoy.
Trabaj varias veces con Ral Ruiz, qu
aprendi con l?
Acompa a Ral Ruiz como actriz en su
ltima dcada creativa en Chile; en cine, teatro,
televisin y radio teatro. Trabajar con Ral era
imbuirme en un proceso creativo de mucha
libertad y experimentacin. Aprend con l
que los equipos de trabajo son importantes
y a creer en la intuicin. Mi historia con Ral
comenz cuando me vio actuar en la pelcula

La telenovela errante es una pieza clave en la
saga ruiziana sobre la historia de lo que l
mismo denomin como el estilema del habla
popular chilena, es decir, de la posibilidad de
la resistencia de un cuerpo y una lengua a la
volatilizacin neoliberal. A veintisiete aos
del rodaje de esta obra y su directa relacin
con una poca que marca el inicio de la
transformacin del alma de nuestro pas, fue
urgente para nosotros construir la pelcula, y
remontar su vigencia visionaria. Chile est

Cmo era la dinmica?
Una vez que estuvo todo el casting definido,
hicimos tres sesiones de ensayo en las cuales
nos conocimos y practicamos las escenas. Se
arm algo muy fluido y bastante orgnico
entre las diferentes personalidades de cada
uno, haba algo en la composicin general que
ya traa una especie de efervescencia, de vida
muy rica. Todo el rodaje fue igual, muy libre, las
escenas se hacan enteras. Se filmaba con tres
cmaras, y eso ayudaba a que estuviramos
todos atentos. A veces durante la escena veas
a la cmara correrse de un lugar a otro para
tomar las reacciones de otro personaje. La
cmara estaba a disposicin de la accin, y no
la accin al servicio de la cmara.
La pelcula tiene un ensamble cast con
muchos personajes importantes, pero el
tuyo adquiere una suerte de protagonismo
progresivo. Cmo lo trabajaste con el
director?
No hubo un trabajo de personaje. Por
supuesto que hablamos un montn, pero l
