Visual Impairment Definition:

"Visual impairment means impairment in vision that, even with


correction, adversely affects a childs educational performance.
The term visual impairment includes both partially sighted and
blindness.

visual impairment is a weakness of vision that affects and make


difficult on people's sight, and they find difficult in some daily
activities such as reading and watching TV.

Outline of Characteristics:

Visual impairment it can be a consequence of different medical


conditions such as: glaucoma, retinopathy of prematurity,
cataracts, retinal detachment, macular degeneration, diabetic
retinopathy, cortical visual impairment, infection and trauma.

Each condition has its own characteristics and clinical features and
visual impairment impact on individual learning is also tied to: the
severity, and the type of visual loss, as well as to any disabilities that
may be present in the child.

Special Need Policy:

UAE:
The government of the UAE realizes the importance to support the
special needs students. In November 2006, the UAE signed the
Optional Protocol to the United Nations (UN) that contains the Rights of
Persons with Disabilities.

KSA:
In KSA every student with special needs he has the rights to transition
education and associated services in early intervention programs, and
individual educational programs as well as to suitable and free special
education.

Policy of Inclusion :

The child will be part of regular class.


He will receive support in another setting for the 30 minutes, from
the vision therapist.

Policy of integration:

The student will be sprit private classroom and join


the regular classroom in some class such as art,
music.

Accommodation:

Accommodations are changes that alert the environment, curriculum


format, or equipment which it helps the disabled to get access to the
content and complete the tasks.

For example, for the visual impairments:


The teacher should extend the time for the student.
They must have large-print books and worksheets.
Trackballs and alternative keyboards.
The information in the board should be of high contrast color.
Braille textbooks/materials.

It is changes made to the content and performance for the student.

Reduce the assignments for the student to completes the easiest


problems.
Use fewer materials than the required content standards.
Subtracting help to the student via hints or clues to lead them to the
correct answers in the test or the tasks.

Instructional Methods:

Visual: Using flashcards with ultraviolet lights can make the reading easier for the
low vision students.

Auditory: Lecture discussion, storytelling, Play with children "I hear with my little
ear to identifying different sounds helps the child to improve auditory
recognition skills.

Kinesthetic: Choose a song and movements that contains the concepts such as
in/out, up/down, front/back.
