PART B (5 X 12 = 60 Marks)
Answer any FIVE Questions
11. (i) Calculate the amount of lime (80% pure) and soda (90% pure) required for softening of [6]
50,000L of water whose chemical analysis results are given below:
Ca(HCO3)2=40.5ppm, Mg(HCO3)2=73ppm, CaSO4=34ppm, CaCl2=27.5ppm and
NaCl=20ppm.
(ii) Describe the ion exchange method of water softening. Give its merits and demerits. [6]

OR
11.(b) (i) One gram of CaCO3 was dissolved in dil HCl and solution diluted to 1L. 50mL of this [6]
solution required 45mL of EDTA solution while 50mL of hard water sample required

18mL of EDTA solution. On the other hand, 50mL of the boiled sample of hard water
when titrated against EDTA consumed 9mL of the solution. Find out each type of
hardness and express it in ppm of CaCO3 equivalents.
(ii) Discuss zeolite method of softening hard water with chemical reactions involved in it. [6]

12.(a) (i) Define wet corrosion. Describe the mechanism of electrochemical corrosion and role of [6]
oxygen in corrosion cells.
(ii) What is cathodic protection? How is it done by using impressed current and sacrificial [6]
anode? Explain with suitable examples.

OR
12.(b) (i) Discuss any three factors affecting the rate of corrosion with respect to environment [6]
and metal.
(ii) What is electroplating? Describe the importance of throwing power, over voltage, [6]
brighteners and wetting agents influence during the process.

13.(a) (i) Explain the preparation, properties and uses of the following polymers: polyvinyl [6]
chloride, teflon and urea-formaldehyde.
(ii) Describe any one method used for moulding of thermoplastic and thermo-setting [6]
plastics.

OR
13.(b) (i) Give the classification polymers on the basis of source, types of polymerization and [6]
type of chain.
(ii) Outline the methods of degradation of polymers and justify why biodegradation is [6]
considered as the best method.
