Removing barriers for business

It starts with a phone call or e-mail.
We need help removing a barrier to
improve our ability to move goods to
market. That is the call and e-mail I
received from two businesses back in
February of this year.
The barrier that both businesses had
was the law in Michigan on the size of the semi-trucks and trail-
ers did not match other states and Canada. Our law was out-
dated to todays technology and competitive market. The busi-
nesses, Rec Boat Holdings and Cherry Growers, also pointed out
that changing the law would reduce transportation costs and
would put fewer semi-trucks on the road.
So how do you remove a barrier?
As your connection to state government, I started meeting with
key staff at the Michigan Department of Transportation and the
offices of our state legislators. The meetings were followed up
with numerous phone calls and e-mails providing facts and fig-
ures on the need for change.
That need created discussion on how existing legislation could
be changed to remove the barriers our businesses faced. Staff at
both MDOT and in the State House of Representatives worked
on language to be added to the bills. Legislation was then intro-
duced by Representatives Phil Potvin and Schmidt to make
Michigan laws more competitive with other states in our region
and up to date.
In early June, all of our hard work came to a close when the
State House and then Senate voted to change the laws and
remove this barrier for our northern Michigan businesses. In
the near future Rec Boat Holdings and Cherry Growers will be
able to transport more goods and services and save on transpor-
tation costs.
The importance of advocating for improvements in our state
and business community have never been more important. The
Northern Michigan Regional Chamber Alliance has four guiding
principles: make it easier for businesses in Northern Michigan
to be profitable; help strong business sectors remain strong in
our region; make sure we have a workforce educated and pre-
pared for the future needs of northern Michigan businesses, and
promote investment in our public transportation and business
infrastructure.

A quiet, humble volunteer

After Jack Richards decided to nominate
his friend David Burrill for the Spirit of the
Community Award, it took him two years
to build his resume. Thats because Burrill
doesnt tell anybody what hes doing. Hes a
quiet, humble volunteer.
But at the Cadillac Area Chamber of
Commerce Annual Awards Dinner, Burrills
many selfless contributions to the commu-
nity were thrown into the spotlight when
he received the 2012 Spirit of Community
Award.
Typical of his humble demeanor, when
Burrill accepted his award he responded
with modesty.
All I can say is thank you, he said. But
theres a special person I need to mention.
Thirty years ago when I moved here this per-
son set a lot of goals and objectives for me. I
worked with Fred Sprague for 25 years and
he set an example. This gentleman pushed
me forward into community service. Hes the
one that really deserves this.
But according to Richards, Burrill has
since paved his own way.
He will tell you he doesnt deserve this,

Dave Burrills Service Record:

Dave Burrill is a former insurance executive who retired from the Sprague
Agency. But Burrill continues to work as a mentor with new staff members and has
volunteered to work as a mediator between the insurance company and the hospital
to help a former client in a time of need.
Burrill has been an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Cadillac, holding numer-
ous positions on the Kiwanis Board, including club president. He helped build the
Kiwanis Park in Cadillac and raised money to put heat in the Wexford Ice Arena.
He has helped with the renovations at Camp Torenta, works concessions at high
school football games and helped with the new disc golf course at Diggins Hill.
After raising his two children, Mike and Michelle, Burrill became a Big Brother vol-
unteer. Hes very dedicated to mentoring the student in his care. He delivers meals
for the Shepherds Table and helps distribute food for Feed America twice a month
in Cadillac.
Hes a dedicated and devoted husband to his wife Diana.

You cant miss Jeremy Winkle. Hes the tall, handsome President of
VanDrie Home Furnishings in Cadillac.
Hes a quiet and private man. But theres a side to 37-year-old Winkle
that most people never see.
Hes a tireless community volunteer and an anonymous supporter of
many charitable community causes.
At this years Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards
Dinner, Winkle was recognized as the 2012 Outstanding Citizen.
Winkle was praised by nominator Precia Garland as being a man of
strong faith whose priorities in life are his faith and his love for his
family. Hes also very dedicated, she noted, to his responsibilities at the
family business.
And at the event, that walk-the-talk lifestyle was obvious when
Winkle was not there in person to accept his honor.
Instead, he was at VanDries making sure a big sales event ran
smoothly.
Jeremy is so dedicated, explained his mom Bev Winkle. We have
been wracking our brains trying to figure out how to get him there.
Theres a private sale that night and I cant imagine he will leave that.
She also noted that her son, although very private, loves the com-
munity.
Hes just involved behind the scenes, she said. Hes involved in his
church and hes very dedicated to the business. He feels blessed and
needs to give back. His father was a great role model for that.
In fact, Jeremy is an Outstanding Citizen legacy. His father Gerard
Winkle received the honor in 1992.
You can always count on Jeremy, Garland said. Rarely does he say
no. And its just part of his nature to be humble about what he does in

Jeremy Winkles Service Record:

Jeremy Winkle is the President of VanDrie Home Furnishings with oversight
responsibilities for all four store locations, including human resources administra-
tion and information systems and technology.
Winkle has served the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce for six years, one
year as its Executive Director. While serving on the Chamber board, Winkle helped
launch the Leadership Learning Series to make continuing education and business
skills available in the community. He is an original member of the Mercy Hospital
Cadillac Foundation Board of Trustees and has chaired multiple foundation commit-
tees. He also serves on the Clam Lake Township DDA board, the Cadillac Country
Club board, and the Chemical Bank board.
A man of faith, Winkle serves as an administrative elder of the Lake City Christian
Reformed Church, President of the Church Council and chair of the Finance
Committee. He is a strong supporter of the Cadillac OASIS as an unofficial advisor.
He is a major supporter of programs that develop and support youth, includ-
ing Eagle Village, Young Life, Spring Hill Camps and Northern Michigan Christian
School.

Business Training Alliance merges with the
Michigan Small Business & Technology
Development Center
After a successful first year, the Business Training Alliance has merged with the Northwest Regional Office
of the Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center (MI-SBTDC), bringing even more
resources to support small businesses in the region. The Business Training Alliance (BTA) was launched in
April of 2011 as an entrepreneurial development program for Wexford and Missaukee Counties.
Since its launch, BTA has counseled more than 40 small businesses in the Cadillac area, including 14
start-up businesses. These counseling efforts resulted in more than $1 million in capital formation and
approximately 20 new jobs. In addition, 219 people received training in starting and managing a small
business.
The BTA began in partnership with many local organizations, including the Cadillac Area Chamber
of Commerce, Baker College of Cadillac, Northwest Michigan Works! and numerous local businesses.
The MI-SBTDC is a network of business consultants and resources, providing Business Counseling,
Training, and Market Research to small businesses. Programs are available in every state; in Michigan,
there are 12 regional offices. The program is funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration and
the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and is hosted in northwest Michigan by Northwest
Michigan Council of Governments.
