Supervisor Ob #2 Reflection
Fall 2017
11/28/17

Well, this is my second supervisor observation reflection and I cannot believe that it is

already this time of the semester. This is my last written reflection as a level three intern! I feel

like the further I get into the semester, the more I grow and strengthen my skills as a teacher. Im

so ready to be full time, five days a week, and feel that my CTs have really prepared me and

showed me the ropes along the way. Theres still a ton of learning to be done, of course, but Im

feeling immensely positive after teaching this lesson on Mass.

For this lesson plan, I designed my lesson completely on my own. My CT gave me the

teacher edition of the science book and a choice of three chapters to look at for our new unit and

I planned. I opened online accounts, created my Nearpod, my Quizziz assessment, my

worksheets, and activities. I taught this lesson both class blocks and they both responded well

and seemed engaged. My Quizziz assessment overview also showed me that most of my students

got all the evidence of learning (summative) questions right, too. From viewing my teaching

video from this lesson, something I liked at 25:20 was how I reviewed the two questions that two

of my students missed. Instead of calling them out and embarrassing them, I got the whole class

attention and said, a handful of you guys missed these two questions, so I would like us to

discuss them before we pack up for the end of the day. By doing this, the problems and

misconceptions were addressed, and no discouragement occurred. Respecting my students

privacy and making the classroom feel open and safe is very important to me, so I try very hard

to think before I act, to show my students that they can trust me. I also find it immensely

important to stress that misconceptions and struggling with content is okay and natural for

everyone at times. Its okay to ask for help and work through something together. At 7:23, one of

my students responded to a question that I posed with a misconception. I like how I provided

positive feedback to this student still and shared with the class that this was a misconception that

I had until like middle school. Its important for students to know that theyre not alone in their

learning and that their teacher can relate to them.

Another positive was my little whole group activity where we compared masses at 14:25.

I was not expecting my students in both blocks to be so excited during this. In both blocks, the

students passed the two balls around, felt the materials, asked me to show proof by adjusting

materials on pan scale, and they provided their predictions and higher order thinking skills when

asked. I loved it! I want to say it was my lesson, but my students in both blocks are amazing.

While I sometimes must have talks with them, they never annoy me or make me super mad. I

truly value the communication bond I have with these forty students.

I did adjust during this pan scale activity, though. At 16:11, I allowed the students to alter

masses and have me show different examples in addition to the ones I had planned to show. This

was a good adjustment, though, because it showed me that they were curious and thinking. The

engagement I wanted was there. Another adjustment I made was during the partner work and

formative independent work. This second block got the content well and showed me that they

understood what they questions were asking and displayed their knowledge with the pan scale

drawing activity on Nearpod. After each student achieved the first two problems on their own

and our formative recording sheet showed there were no 2s and 1s this lesson, my CT and I

decided to stop the students with this activity and have them move to Quizziz evidence of

learning assessment. Quizziz is a fun way to give little assessments because it is in a game

format where the students earn a rank. This gets the students so pumped to participate. Each

question answered is also followed by a fun meme, which is funny and engaging, and all the data

from each student response is shown in graphs and percentages. This allows me to clearly see

what questions mightve caused confusion and what content from the lesson students are getting

stuck during. The students cannot see each others answers and data, either. And on top of it,

Quizziz sends you an excel sheet with all the student data!

Despite these little adjustments here and there to better meet student needs, I honestly do

not feel like I experienced any negatives during this lesson on Mass. I felt comfortable teaching

and the content was grasped. I didnt have to deal with any student behaviors that day and

everyone participated in discussion. While not every day is like that, obviously, this school day

felt awesome. I now understand certain technology better after planning on my own and I feel

like my lesson planning compared to my first supervisor observation has grown and

strengthened. My goal is to keep listening to my CTs feedback, taking notes, reflecting on my

practices to better student learning, and coming to work with a positive attitude that reflects unto

my students.
