2.1 Indicotor—The indicator as
shown in Figure 1 consists of three
pieces: a glats tube about 75 mm (3 in.)
Jong and 25 mn (1 in.) in diameter with
4 stem 75 mm (3 in.) long and 6.4 min
(025 in.) in diameter at one end resem-
bling a fier te for Goceh crucibles,
a rubber stopper 10 fit the lager end of
the glass tube, and a metal cup mounted
fon the smaller end of the stopper. The
Siem of the glass tube is scribed with :
1 Tins, each pair indicating an approxi- yi
imate volume of 0.08 mL, A reference
line is also seribed on the large portion
ofthe ube, The exact stem factor should
be determined in accordance with Sec
sion 2.2. The brase cup is 19 mum (0.75

‘CONTENT
AA The ale content can be deters
‘mined from Tables 1 and 2 or Figure

‘eading can be multiplied by the appro
priate mortar correction factor shown in
Table 1 t0 provide the monarcorrected
air content. The moras-corrected air con-
tent should be ineteated or decreased by
the curve corrections shown in Table ?
to provide the actual air content. For
example, if the morar conten is 0.556
(anf), the Chace factor is 2.3. and the
stem reading is 6.0 percent. multiply the
stem reading by 1.26 (1.28) as indicated
by Table 1 (based on average of values
for Chace faciors of 22 and 2.) to give
amoriar-corrected air content of 7.6 (7.1)
percent. The 7.6 (7.7) percent is in
creased by 0.9 percent, as indicated by
Table 2, to give an alr coatent of 85
(8.5) percent
‘As an altematve, the air cootent can
bbe determined from the Chace conver.
sion nomograph shown in Figure 2. For
example, enter the nomograph a the
Tower left side at te Chace factor, which
is 23, move horizontally to the right to
intersect the mortar content, which is
0.556 mm’, move verically to intersect
the stem reading, whit is 60 percent,
and move honzonally to the let edge
Gf the aomograph to read the air content,
which is 85 (8.6) percent
5. LIMITATIONS
3.1 Because of the small amount of
‘mortar used ina test the Chace indicator
will not give the air content of concrete
4s accurately a5 wll the cher methods
‘mentioned in Section 1.2. However. a
reasonably accurate indication of the ait
content can be obtained by taking the
average of the results of tests on wo
samples. The average of tex on five
samples provides the same statistical
level of confidence as one test by T 152
