EDUC 2220- Educational Technology Lesson Plan

Distinguishing Shapes and Sizes

Irina Shvets
First Grade / Mathematics

Common Core Standards:

MEASUREMENT AND DATA 1.MD
Represent and interpret data.
1.MD. 4. Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about
the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category
than in another.
GEOMETRY 1.G
Reason with shapes and their attributes.
1.G.1. Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining
attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.
1.G.2. Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-
circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular
cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape.
1.G.3. Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words
halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two
of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates
smaller shares

Lesson Summary:
The lesson is designed so the students can distinguish what Geometry is and how to measure data and be
able to represent it. The students will get to learn how to categorize their shapes into different groups and
sizes. The students will be able to do this by using a QR code scanner to find the shapes throughout the
classroom. This lesson will take 4-5 days to complete so the students can actually comprehend what shapes
are and each day theyll learn more than the day before.

Estimated Duration:
Four 45-minute class periods for an entire week
Commentary:
To begin this lesson, I will gather the students together and Ill have a stack of shapes in my hands. I will ask
the students to tell me what the shapes are as I hold them up for them to see. Ill let them know that its fine
if they dont some of them because we will learn them throughout the week. I challenge that I anticipate is
some students will know more than the others and not give the others a chance to learn.
Instructional Procedures:
Day 1: In the first 10 minutes I will introduce the shape activity. I will tell everyone what well be doing and
then Ill have them working on reading or quiet time while I call up each student one bye one to pre-assess
them on their knowledge of shapes. This will roughly take me around 15 minutes or so. Then after I have
assessed each student separately I will assess the class as a whole. I will hold up each shape and I will have
them answer what shape it is. I would spend the entire time on this just so the students can have a grasp on
what shapes well be learning about in the next few days.

Day 2: Today Ill be introducing what QR codes are. I will explain to the students and show them some
examples of what they look like and point one or two around the classroom. Once the students know what
QR codes are then Ill tell them that they will use iPads to look for all the QR codes in the classroom. Ill
spend the next 5 minutes or so assigning each student and iPad that they can use and then they can begin to
scan the QR codes to find all 10 shapes that well be learning. This should roughly take around 15 minutes
and then Ill gather all the students together and see what they learned about using QR codes.

Day 3: Ill start the class off with showing the ten shapes to the students and seeing what theyve learn in the
past two days and see how much they know so far. Then Ill divide the students into four groups, each group
will have 5 or 6 students. I will then give each group a stack of the 10 shapes in three different sizes. For
example, there will be a small circle, a medium circle and a large circle. The students are to categorize the 10
shapes into 3 different sizes. At the end of the activity there should be 10 shapes in the small category, 10 in
the medium and 10 in the large.

Day 4: Today, Ill give out the iPads to each student and will give them a post-assessment on it. I will have a
page of 10 shapes each labeled on what color theyre supposed to color it and they will use the coloring
thats available to them on the iPad. I will assess them by walking around and seeing if each student is
coloring each shape the correct color. I will also have paper printouts for students who finish faster on the
iPad and have nothing to do. They can color with colored pencils, crayons or markers. At the end, Ill score
them based on what they colored each shape and if it was the correct color.

Pre-Assessment:
Before beginning the assignment, the teacher will have a stack of 10 laminated shapes and he/she will quiz
each student on what they know about their shapes. Some of the shapes will be rhombus, rectangle, oval,
square, etc. The students have to get at least 6/10 right and theyll get split up into two groups. A group of
students will be the ones who dont know any shapes or didnt pass the 6 or itll be a group who passed the 6
and know their shapes.
Scoring Guidelines:
Students have to at least get 6 out of 10 shapes correct to be in a certain group. One group will be
anyone who knows 6 or more shapes and the other group will be the ones who barely know their
shapes and need more help and understanding of their shapes.

Post-Assessment:
After we have learned about shapes and done different activities with shapes then we will have a post-
assessment. The post assessment will be different from the pre-assessment. Students will be handed a page
of 10 shapes and will be asked to color each shape a different color. I will have the page made online so I
can share it onto the iPads and the students can color on the iPads or on a regular sheet of paper.
Scoring Guidelines:
Scores will be out of 10 points. The students have to have at least 8 out of 10 points to have
mastered the shape activity. If the students dont pass Ill have another activity with shapes to help
them understand a little more.

Differentiated Instructional Support

If I have any students who get 9 or 10 right they will be paired with someone who got a very low score when
they took the pretest. In this case, the students who are accelerated can help their buddy out and help them
learn. Having a buddy isnt always a good idea but in this case it will be since theyre first graders and
theyre still learning.

Extension
https://www.khanacademy.org/math/basic-geo/basic-geometry-shapes
The students can go onto this website for more help on shapes and if they dont understand something. The
Khan Academy is made for students all of ages and its free to use. There are different types of videos and
quizzes that the students can do to gain more knowledge.

Homework Options and Home Connections

Since the students are only First Graders I wouldnt be assigning any homework to them. I would let their
parents know what were learning in class and tell them to do something similar at home each day so that the
children can get the shapes stuck in their brains. I would tell the parents to have the students do a scavenger
hunt at home and find things that look like the shapes weve talked about and have them tell you why.

Interdisciplinary Connections
This lesson will be integrated with other part of Mathematics such as geometry and categorizing and sorting.
The students will be able to distinguish the different sizes of the shapes by grouping the small shapes into
one category, medium in another and large in another group. I will also extend the activity by having them
put round shapes in one category and shapes with a straight edge in another group.
This lesson can be extended more and the students can use the shapes for counting things when theyre
adding or substracting.

Additional Notes

Be excited with the students and they will also be excited. Students are always ready to learn if the teacher is
too. Be confident and teach the students about their shapes.
