Course Description: Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is a business management softwaretypically a suite of
integrated applicationsthat a company can use to collect, store, manage and interpret data from many business
activities, including product planning, cost, manufacturing or service delivery, marketing and sales. A powerfully
integrated ERP system enables interactions of marketing, sales, quality control, products processes, supply lines,
stocks and many other areas and it can be in a single database. The underlying theme of the course covers the
different ERP solutions provided by different vendors and how its implementation makes an impact in the organization.
Through this course, the students will be able to align business requirements and the ERP packages available and be
able to decide on re-engineering and customization. The course gives special emphasis on the different re-engineering
and ERP implementation approaches used by organizations. It also touches upon certain critical contemporary issues
during implementation of ERP and how to resolve them effectively and efficiently.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLO):


On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
CLO1: Describe the role of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in context of organizational performance and
competitive advantage.
CLO2: Decide on an effective ERP design and implementation approach based on the requirements and organizational
constraints by mapping business requirements with package functionalities through customization and process re-
engineering.
CLO3: Appreciate applicability of ERP packages by navigating through different modules in an ERP package.
CLO4: Comprehend and effectively resolve the contemporary issues encountered by organizations in an ERP
implementation across varied business environments (large scale vs. SME).

The entire course will be covered by the use of the following methodology:

Evaluation/Structure for Grading


The following will be the distribution of the marks for the semester:-
A. Case Discussions: 10 marks [CLO1, CLO2 and CLO4]
B. Group Project + Presentation: 15 marks (5 + 10) [CLO4]

The rules and criteria for the group presentation is as mentioned below:-
a) The presentation needs to be mailed to the faculty at least 24 hours in advance of the actual scheduled
presentation. After mailing the presentation, changes can only be made in the presentation after
informing the concerned faculty.
b) The last 5 minutes in each presentation will be for questions and answers. Students need to wind up
the presentation in 25 minutes.
c) Criteria for evaluation is as below:-
a. Content & Analysis (Group): 4 marks
b. Communication (Individual): 2 marks
c. Question Answering (Individual): 2 marks
d. Coordination (Group): 1 mark
e. Dress Code (Individual): 1 mark
C. Quizzes: 10 marks [CLO1 to CLO4]
a. Quiz 1: 10 marks [CLO1 and CLO2]
b. Quiz 2: 10 marks [CLO3 and CLO4]
D. Class Participation/ Lab Work: 5 marks [CLO4]
E. Mid Semester: 20 marks [CLO1 and CLO2]
F. End Semester: 40 marks [CLO1 to CLO4]

Details of Group Project & Presentation:


The groups for the Group Project / Presentation will be created by the faculty and communicated to the
students accordingly. The groups can select any one (or some other in case they have a better topic) of the
following topics:-
a) A comparative analysis of organizational factors favoring ERP implementation in a large scale vs. a medium
scale organization

b) Vendor selection criteria for ERP implementations in a large scale vs. medium scale organization
c) Implementation methodology differences between a large scale vs. small scale enterprise
d) Emerging issues in ERP implementation in the last decade (2006 to 2015)
e) An analysis of the change in critical factors considered by organizations while implementing ERP pre and
post 2010

Session Plan (1 session = 75 minutes)


Week 1: Course Plan & Introduction to ERP [Session 1 and 2 (CLO1)]
After going through the session, the students will be able to:-
Know the scheme of their internal evaluation.
Get the details of their respective groups.
Get the information of the Group Projects and Presentations.
Differentiate between a company, a firm, an organization, a corporation and an enterprise.
Differentiate between an enterprise system and an information system.
Describe different classifications of type of enterprise resources.
Elaborate on what planning is in context of enterprise systems.
Describe ERP as a concept by integrating the concepts of an enterprise, resources and planning.
Differentiate between the core and extended components of ERP.

Week 2: Lab Session I - Introduction to GBI 2.0 & SD Module [Session 3 and 4 (CLO3)]
After going through the session, students will be able to:-
Understand the terminology used in GBI 2.0
Navigate and browse through the different modules of GBI 2.0.
Use the shortcuts of the GBI 2.0 module to do various activities.
Create new customers in the S&D system and add their corresponding details in the system.

Week 3: Article Discussion: Investing in the IT that makes the Competitive Difference
[Session 5 (CLO1)]
After going through the session, students will be able to appreciate the need and importance of having an ERP based
system in an organization. Students will be given the article during week 2 and will be asked to come prepared. The
discussion will be evaluative (2.5 marks) and might involve a written submission as well.

Week 3: ERP System Drivers, Problem Areas, Gap Analysis and ERP Vendors [Session 6 (CLO2)]
After going through the session, students will be able to:-
Discuss what drives the need of ERP systems in modern day organizations with special focus on the interaction
between the horizontals and the verticals.
Elaborate on the different reasons organizations have given for implementing ERP.

Week 4: ERP System Drivers, Problem Areas, Gap Analysis and ERP Vendors
[Session 7 and 8 (CLO2)]
After going through the session, students will be able to:-
Characterize ERP systems with respect to the special features.
Enlist the advantages and disadvantages of ERP systems with respect to its usage.
Discuss in detail the problem areas that organizations have faced with respect to ERP implementations.
Describe the importance and the role played by Gap Analysis in the ERP implementation process.
Enlist the various ERP vendors and rank them in order of their market shares.
Enlist the different ERP solutions being provided by different ERP vendors with respect to different sectors.

Week 5: Lab Session II Sales & Distribution Module [Session 9 and 10 (CLO3)]
After going through the session, students will be able to:-
Change customer-related details in the SAP GBI 2.0 application.
Use inventory sheets in the application to check the availability of the material being demanded by the
customer.
Create a sales order using the SAP GBI 2.0 application.

Week 6: Case Study Discussion: Enterprise IT at Cisco [Session 11 and 12 (CLO2)]


The hard copy of the case study for the discussion Enterprise IT at Cisco will be circulated to the students in week
5 and the students would need to come prepared for the discussion. The case discussion will carry marks towards
overall performance evaluation (2.5 marks).

Week 7: Lab Session III GBI Sales & Distribution Module [Session 13 and 14 (CLO3)]
After going through the session, students will be able to:-
Realize the importance of the goods issue process
Analyze and resolve issues during the creation of the sales order.
Differentiate between a sales order and a purchase order process.
Analyze the importance of the steps involved in the creation of the sales order process.
Use the audit trail in the application to actually track problems in the sales order.
Get a look and feel of the Material Management Module

Week 8: Role of BPR in an ERP implementation and Planning an ERP Implementation


[Session 15 and 16 (CLO2)]
After going through the session, students will be able to:-
Discuss the countries and the organizations which form the major market for the ERP vendors.
State the reasons why ERP penetration is in nascent stages in the developing countries.
Describe the reasons why ERP penetration is low in the Indian organizations.

Characterize BPR and discuss myths about the BPR process.
Distinguish clearly the concepts of BPR and TQM as used in the modern day world.
Discuss the different BPR implementation approaches along with its advantages and disadvantages.
State the role played by IT in BPR and hence its importance in ERP implementation.
Enlist the success and failure factors that might be involved in a BPR implementation.
Discuss the steps involved in a planning process of an ERP implementation.
State the importance of economic and strategic justification required in an ERP implementation process.
Describe how to plan the various resources that might go into the ERP implementation process.
Realize the importance of top management and organization wide commitment in the ERP planning process.
Enlist what all costs needs to be considered while creating the budget for an ERP implementation.

Week 9: Lab Session IV GBI Material Management Module [Session 17 and 18 (CLO3)]
After going through the session, students will be able to:-
Create a new vendor by adding its details in the material management module.
Check the inventory status of the material before ordering it from the vendor.
Carry out the initial steps of creating a purchase order.

Week 10: Case Study Discussions: Successfully Navigating the Turbulent Skies of a Large Scale ERP
Implementation and The San Diego City Schools - ERP Return on Investment
[Session 19 (CLO2) and 20 (CLO4)]
The hard copy of the case study for the discussion Successfully Navigating the Turbulent Skies of a Large Scale ERP
Implementation and The San Diego City Schools - ERP Return on Investment will be circulated to the students in
week 9 and the students would need to come prepared for the discussion. The case discussion will carry marks
towards overall performance evaluation (2.5 marks each).

Week 11: Lab Session V - Material Management Module (GBI 2.0) [Session 21 and 22 (CLO3)]
After going through the session, students will be able to:-
Create the purchase order by following the sequence of steps given in the tutorial.
Analyze the steps in the typical purchase order.
Correlate between a sales order and a purchase order.

Week 12: Group Project Presentations [Session 23 and 24 (CLO4)]


This session will cater to project work to be done by the students and would involve a presentation from each group.
