GROUP LEARNING EXPERIENCE PLANNING SHEET

Student Name: Helena Toolsiedas Course Code: ECS 3030

Age Group: Preschool Date: Nov. 23rd, 2017

Learning Experience: Sort and Count Bottles

Programming Purpose:

The purpose of this activity is to enhance the preschoolers counting skills using shapes and colours. Previously, they
have showed an interest in shapes. When I presented them with the 3-D shape activity, they enjoyed playing with it.
This time, this activity requires the preschoolers to use their fine motor skills to place the correct number of shapes
into each water bottle. The shapes are small but, they will have to apply pressure to get them not the bottle. This
will enhance their fine motor skills, even more. In addition, each bottle has a different colour on it to show the
preschoolers what colour they need to sort into each bottle. With that, the bottles also have numbers written on
each side; this will show them the amount of shapes they need to put into each bottle.

Objective:

Children will gain an understanding of shapes, colours and numbers. Usually, each activity has one element. This
activity will challenge the preschoolers by combining each of the elements. In addition, the children will develop their
fine motor skills by picking up the small 2-D shapes and placing them into the small opening of a plastic water bottle.

1. My first objective is for the preschoolers is for them to develop their cognition by using skill 4.13 in the
ELECT. This skill discusses determining quantity and ways to encourage the children to do this. With this
activity, each bottle has a number on it, I want to observe if the children can put the same number of
shapes into the bottle as it requires. By doing this, they will increase their ability to match numbers to
objects.

2. My second objective is developing the preschoolers ability to represent numbers, 4.15 in the ELECT. This
skill can be achieved when they recognize the numbers written on each bottle. In addition, by putting the
correct amount of shapes into each bottle, they can represent numbers as well. If this is difficult for them, I
will lay out a certain number of shapes and ask them to count it.

3. My third objective is to develop the preschoolers fine motor skills 5.3 in the ELECT. Ive noticed that the
way they hold a paint brush or a pencil is not the typical way were used to. Due to this, by giving the
children a chance to develop their fine motor muscles, they will be able to hold items differently. This will
also help them grasp onto items better because the shapes are smaller and harder to pick up.
Materials: Modifications:

- 4 clean water bottles (labels removed) Stabilize: To stabilize this activity, I will remove the
- 4 different colours of paper bottles and just verbally ask them to show me a certain
- Permanent marker to write numbers on each number of shapes.
bottle
- Scissors Simplify: To simplify this activity I will ask them to show
me a smaller number of shapes or I will focus on the
- Tape
colours.

Enhance: To enhance this activity I will give them

something bigger to put the shapes into.

Tweak: To tweak this activity I will I will tape the bottles

onto the table to prevent it from falling.

Opening (Introduction)

To open this activity, I will invite the children to the table and ask them if they want to play with shapes. Then I will
ask them to count with me from 1 to 10. I will say Last week, we got to play with 3D shapes, this week, we will get
to count them!

Body (Content)

1. First, I will invite the children to the table and count with them
2. Then, I will show them the activity and ask, what do you see?
3. I will ask them what numbers they can see on the bottles and point them out
4. Then, I will show them the shapes and using modeling to put a certain amount of shapes into a bottle
5. I will use scaffolding to determine how much assistance they need
6. For example, I will demonstrate how to add the shapes into the bottles and then I will ask them to try it
themselves
7. I will use behavior reflections to encourage what they are doing for example I see that you put 3 pink triangles
into the pink bottle or I see there is a three on that bottle, I noticed you put 3 squares into it.
8. I will ask open ended questions such as how many shapes are there? or can you tell me what shapes you
see or what number is that?
9. I will provide them with the total amount of each shape that can go into each bottle
10. I will observe if they sort each amount of shapes correctly

Closing (Ending)

To conclude, I will let them know that they have counted the shapes well. I will ask if they liked this activity and ask
them to count to 15 with me. I will then ask for their assistance to help me clean up.

Transition I will transition the children into lunch by playing the tidy up song and encouraging them to help clean.
