Question 1(a) Calculate the moment of the 1.6 N force, shown in Figure 1, about the pivot O
of the wall-switch toggle. (4 Marks)

Question 1(b) Replace the two forces that act on the 3 m cube, shown in Figure 2, by an

equivalent single resultant force R and a couple M acting at A. (6 Marks)

Question 2(a) Identify zero force member(s), if any, in a loaded truss, shown in Figure 3.
Also calculate the forces in the members DC and DE using method of Joints. Assume support
at A is a roller support and D is a pin support. (2+2=4 Marks)

Question 2(c) In the same truss shown above in Figure 3; calculate the force in the members
BC, BE and AE using Method of Section. (6 Marks)

Question 3(a) Determine the distance of the Centroid of the shaded area, shown in Figure 4,
from y- and x- axes respectively. (4 Marks)

Question 3(b) For the H-beam section, determine the moments of inertia Ixx and Iyy about the
central x- and y- axes respectively. Given, b = 150 mm. (6 Marks)

Question 4(a) In the shown Figure 6, determine the Shear force VB at a section B between A
and C. Section B is at 0.6 m from the support A, as shown in Figure 6. Assume supports A and
C as roller and pin support respectively. (4 Marks)

Question 4(b) In the shown beam (Figure 7), calculate the value of bending-moment at a
section, 4-m from the left support A. Assume supports A and B as pin and roller support
respectively. (6 Marks)

Question 5(a) The force P is applied to the 90-kg crate, which is stationary before the force is
applied (Figure 8). Determine the magnitude of the friction force F exerted by the horizontal
surface on the crane if (4 Marks)
(i) P = 300 N;
(ii) P = 400 N; and
(iii) P = 500 N.

Question 5(b) In Figure 9, determine what value of P is required to the 50-kg block to initiate
motion up the incline? (6 Marks)
