Dolan - Summary

The development of instruments (whether musical or scientific) in any given snapshot of history

has ramifications that shift the paradigm of how methods of thought about the instruments

themselves, or about the things being measured or produced. In fact, one of the most interesting

from a musicological perspective is the way that the ineffability of music, the absolutist view,

developed, as a direct result of a shift in thought about orchestration in the musical world from

Haydns time to the early 20th century. Studying how instruments or devices developed in a given

time period, not only provides an analogy between past and present, but also can provide a direct

link to the mindset of the people of that time.
