III. Anticipatory Set

- Before coming to the carpet have the students get out their supplies.

I will cut out a paper turkey, as I do so I will make a mess with scraps of paper on
the floor and not clean up after myself. Class, what is the problem that you see? Why
is it a problem? If I make a mess all over the floor what do you think I should do?

Today, we will be talking about what it means to be a good citizen.

IV. Lesson Presentation (Input/Output)

 First we need to know what a citizen is. I will give the definition of what a citizen is.
The people who live in a city, state, or country. We are citizens of the United States,
Indiana, and Marion.
During the school year I live in Marion, but my family lives in Zionsville. So I am a
citizen of Zionsville. Because you live in Marion you are a citizen. But we can also
expand our definition to include the places where we spend a lot of time. For example,
you are a citizen of this classroom and this school.
Now that we know what a citizen is lets figure out how a good citizen should act.
Explain what a good citizen would do. a good citizen is a person who respects others
and their property, is helpful, considerate, and willing to put others first, respects the
environment and does not damage it in anyway, and is well mannered. A good citizen
does their homework and does not make a mess.
Have words and examples cut out and have the students tell you if it goes on the
good citizen side or the not so good citizen side. I have two sides (good citizen and
not so good citizen) Your job is to tell me if the example is a good citizen or not so good
citizen.

The students will have a partner and they will make a foldable. Each student will get
their own piece of paper on what to draw/write about. They have to fold it in half
and on a separate piece of paper draw a picture of an act of kindness with a
sentence telling what it is. Then they will present it in class.
While I am talking about the activity I will be handing out the materials. I have a
little activity where you will be with a partner and you will have to come up with a
way you could be a good citizen. There are four topics: Home, School, Grocery store,
and Park. Each group with get 1 topic. For example, If you and your partner have the
topic school then you have to come up with a way you could be a good citizen at that
place. You need to draw a picture. After you draw your picture you need to choose one
of the word stems that is on the board- (point) I will , A good citizen ., You will need
a pencil, crayons, scissors, and glue.
I am giving each group a piece of construction paper, 2 pieces of white paper, and a
paper with 2 words and definitions . You will draw on the white piece of paper and
glue it on one side of the colored construction paper. On the white piece of paper I am
giving you, your topic will be at the top.
For the other piece of paper that has 2 words and 3 definitions you will have to figure
out what definition goes with what word. The trick is there are 2 words but 3
definitions so you have to figure out which one does not belong to either of the words.
You will then glue this on the flap of the construction paper and this is where your
names will go. Make sure you and your partner work together on this part. Put on
display an already finished example for them to see.
Once everyone is done I will have a few of you share your ideas with the class.
I have already split you up but before I tell you who your partner is remember you are
suppose to be working on ideas together- help each other come up with ideas and you
and your partner have to have different ideas. Once I call your name find your partner
and go to a spot in the room.
Throughout the activity I will go around the class and watch the students to see

I will be coming around while you are working. Make sure you ask me for help if you do not
understand.

V. Check for understanding. How do you know students have learned? What strategies
will you implement if all students have not met lesson outcomes? Employ one or
more strategies to determine student learning

come share what you did with the class. Does anyone want to share? Wait for response
You can come up here and show everyone on the doc camera. Tell us your topic and what
you drew.
- I will let anyone who wants to share their drawing unless we run out of time.
- Give the students 5 strips of paper- 3 with a definition and 2 with words.
