READINESS
I. Goals/Objectives/Standard(s)
A. Goal(s) Students will be able to look at multiple soil samples and give a description
of the soil.
C. Standard:
1.ESS.3 Observe a variety of soil samples and describe in words and pictures the soil
properties in terms of color, particle size and shape, texture, and recognizable living
and nonliving items.
A. Materials
B. Time
45 Minutes
C. Behavior
D. Space
- Desks
IV. Purpose
(ACEI 1.0)
-Arcielya, Isham, and Noah struggle to read so they will be with stronger readers so they
understand what and where they need to write and draw information- Also why I am
giving students a word bank
(ACEI 3.2)
VI. Lesson Presentation (Input/Output)
-Lets think about the word observing. Do any of you know what observing means? Wait for
responses. Explain what observing means--- Observing is noticing. You are
(observing) noticing something about an object such as color, size, shape. Today we
are going to be doing some observing.
- We are going to do an activity where we are split up into groups and observe soil. You will
get this worksheet and 4 different types of soil. Each different type of soil is in a jar
labeled Sample A, Sample B, Sample C, Sample D. You have to find the soil sample
and put your responses in the blank along with a picture (Show all instruction/
modeling on doc cam)
- We are going to do the first sample together as practice. First everyone needs to go get
their pencil box and I will call names and spots as you grab them. (I will already have
areas set up around the room for the students- each spot will have all materials
needed and will assign them as I call their names) Do not touch anything until I tell
you too.
- Now Id like all of you to grab your soil sample that says Sample A on the glass Jar (Point to
mine) Grab your worksheet and find this column marked soil (Point to it- Displaying with doc
cam)- The one below that says Sample A like on your glass jar- Put your finger on the word
Sample A-
- Move one space over to your right above this empty box it says color do you guys see
that? Move to the board and write Color - What colors do you see in the soil? Write
down what they say. You are going to write one of those words in the blank you have
your finger on.
-Move over one more column this is asking for texture so what it feels like Go ahead and
put your jar in the big foil pan and open it. Grab some soil and think about how it
feels Just call out what it feels like when you know. Write Texture on the board and
add their responses Write one of those words in the box
- Move over one more column this is asking for size. What do we mean by size? Wait for
responses Move over to board write Size Knowing what size is- what is the size of
this soil? Wait for responses write big small medium- Have them write the word
down
- Move over one more column this is asking for shape. What do I mean by shape? What does
it mean? Wait for responses Ask so what shape do we think the soil is? Write Shape
on board Write answers underneath write the shape you think it looks like in the
blank.
-Move over one more column to the very last square and you are going to draw a picture of
what the soil looks like using your crayons and crazy good drawing skills.
- Does anyone not understand what we are doing? Or need me to explain something again?
- Okay. Do not forget you are working in partners so make sure you work together to help
each other with this. I am going to leave these words on the board in case youre not
sure how to spell a word. I will also be walking around to help anyone who needs it.
Alright you can go ahead and start.
(ACEI 2.4)
(ACEI 3.3)
- Once you are done Make sure all your jars are closed. I would like you to bring your
worksheet up and grab 1 jar for you and your partner to share. I want you to observe this
soil sample for a few minutes look at the color, texture, size, and shape. Alright times up
just shout out the answer when I ask. What is the color? Response. Texture? Response.
Size? Response. Shape? Responses.
- Great Job now lets go ahead and close that jar and clean up our spots. Tell students where
things should go.
Formative :
(ACEI 4.0)
1. How many students achieved the lesson objective(s)? For those who did not, why
not?
6. What adjustments did I make to reach varied learning styles and ability levels?
