The Shadyside school is implementing the basic education structure by implementing the No

Child left behind policy (NCLB) which include enhancing reading and mathematics . the school give less
emphasis on the other subjects such as music, arts and gifted program that consume so much resources
and time but less importance in basic education. NCLB was the main law for K12 general education in
the United States from 20022015, the law held schools accountable for how kids learned and achieve it
is controversial in part because it penalized schools that didnt show improvement. NCLB also set the
expectation that struggling students learn alongside their peers. By making schools report their results
by subgroup, NCLB shined a light on students receiving special education services. Schools were pushed
to give struggling students more attention, support and help. The NCLB where mainly focus on slow
learner and disregard the fast learners and the gifted by removing other subjects like music and arts and
focus only on reading and mathematics.

While education is for all there is school the Sunnyvale School program where designed for fast
learners and student with giftedness and focusing on their interest for learning. Sunnyvale ware
opposite of Shadyside School in terms on policy and implementation. The school focused on educating
children who are identified as gifted and allowing them to pursue their interests through thematic
instruction with long blocks of time to work on in depth projects. In Sunnyvale School, these educational
experiences are structured to require the learner to take initiative, think critically, problem solve, make
decisions, and be accountable for the results. In Sunnyvale School, teachers, strive to create
compelling topics that set the stage for life-long learning strategies.

Other schools has their own strategies by creating a heterogeneous group or mix group
between fast and slow learners. The Brookdale School is using this methods, however the teachers in
this school has find difficulties in addressing the needs of the students and their learning style. Similar
to Shadyside School Brookdale School focus only on the basic needs on the student and do not
implement programs for gifted and for high IQ students. The Brookdale Education system limits only on
the needs of the community and do not apply innovations in learning. This methods isolate students in
coping with new trends in education, like advancement in technology and education.

The use of new model is defined using three Rs and other three Rs that aims to gain excellence
rather that the goals. A popular view exists that to correct the problems of our educational systems, we
have to get back to basics and mainly concentrate our efforts on the three Rsreading, 'riting and
'rithmetic. Being highly skilled in the three Rs is of great value and importance. But underlying the three
Rs, is something even more fundamental, something even more basic. In fact, it is something so
obvious that it has been completely overlooked in the search for solutions to the problems that plague
many of our schools. There is the other Rs the reasoning, resilience and responsibility the mainly focus
on the attitude of the learners while the basic Rs focus only on knowledge and skills. The other Rs
defines as life skills.

Recent research points to the importance of life skills or character education in enhancing
teaching and student learning. This focus rests on the notion that a student's success in academics is
augmented by strong problem solving skills. Experts have identified reasoning, resilience and
responsibility as key problem solving skills that, when learned, can benefit student achievement and
general life success strategies. The prevailing view among scientists is that teachers can teach these
skills and students can learn them.

Reasoning refers to the process of drawing conclusions or inferences from information.

Reasoning always requires going beyond the information that is given (Bruner, 1957). In logic, an
inference is called deductive if the truth of the initial information (or premises) guarantees the truth of
the conclusion. The inference is called inductive if the truth of the premises makes the conclusion
probable but not certain. Distinctions between deductive and inductive reasoning can be important in
understanding logic.

Responsibility. Most parents recognize the importance of having children assigned daily chores.
However some see this as just a way to get children to help out so that the parent is not overburdened.
While that is true, doing daily chores helps a child learn important life lessons. They learn that others are
affected by what they do and so they learn why it is important to be responsible. This is one of the
reasons why we should not shield children from the consequences of their irresponsible actions. They
need to recognize that when they do not carry out their end of a bargain, others could be
inconvenienced or even hurt. Chores also help to teach children discipline.

Resilience. Being resilient means having the ability to recover from failure and go on to thrive. It
is important that children realize they will not succeed at everything they do all the time. We must
prepare them to deal with the inevitable failures that will occur. As Dr. Brazelton says When a child is
afraid to fail, she is also afraid to risk, and that greatly inhibits her ability to succeed. Our children need
to be willing to try and we have to be there to pick them up, dust them off and help them to try again
when failure occurs. We can help them by getting them to think about why they failed and seeing what
lessons they can learn to help them next time. We must also be sure to encourage and praise them
when they show a willingness to try again.

In developing curriculum there must be balance in education policy that address different types
of learners. Also it involves different area like in language, music, arts and science that address the
needs of the students. Its our responsibility as a teacher address the needs of our students in terms on
teaching and learning.
