Classroom Management Plan:

In an attempt to minimize disruptive behaviours that take away from the learning opportunities of the
entire class, multiple strategies will be employed to maximize student engagement and enjoyment
within my class, and maintain a focus on expanding pertinent skills and knowledge. The strategies listed
below seek a more preventative approach, trying to proactively avoid disruptions through engagement.

Role of the Teacher and the Student:

Within the context of my classes, I intend the role of the teacher to be a facilitator of learning rather
than a source of information. Of course, it is not reasonable to expect the latter to play no role. I believe
that there will always be times in which direct instruction is best suited for the context and because of
that it will certainly be used. The teacher, however, should find engaging ways to deliver content that
help to gain the attention and interest of the students, encouraging them to invest in their education.
Life-long learning is a very important ideal for me, and one I hope to instill within all my students, not
only within the field of science, but throughout all facets of life.

In considering teachers as facilitators, students are then no longer expected to absorb the ideas thrown
at them. Rather, I hope my students will truly explore and inquire, asking critical questions of both me
and the content. It is the students role to truly embrace the learning process and take pride in their own
learning. Coming to class with an open mind, ready to learn and work hard is essential. Learning is not
easy, students must work at it to gain genuine understandings.

Enhancing Interest in Science:

For many students, science is viewed as a boring, factual based discipline. This can certainly be the case,
but it does not need to be delivered this way. By employing a Nature of Science perspective, students
will gain a greater respect for the discipline as an evolving entity that is continually adapting. To
emphasize this, lab work and student-driven activities will be utilized often to provide a meaningful and
memorable exploration of science.

Another way to enhance interest in science will be through an integral bellwork practice. Continuing the
practice of my Teacher Mentor, each class will start with a current event centered around the world of
science and technology. This will expose students to a wide array of topics not directly addressed within
the context of the classroom. This will be a benefit as it expands their understanding of the vastness of
the discipline while providing more avenues and opportunities to draw connections between what they
know and what they learn.

Another idea that I am excited to implement is asking students what they want to learn. On the first day
or two of class, students will tell me something (within the field of science) that they want to learn
about. This can be anything they are curious about. For example, perhaps a student wonders what
causes us to sneeze, or maybe something more advanced like why did I get the flu even though I had a
flu shot?. Every Friday I will spend roughly 5 minutes addressing one of these student topics. This can be
empowering in the sense that students are being given some authority over what they are taught in the
classroom.

To build upon this idea, students will also have the ability to explore topics on a more independent
basis. At the end of each unit, a research driven project will be presented to the students. They will have

some degree of autonomy in the topic that they research and the direction in which they take this
research. By doing this, I hope that students take greater pride in their work, as they have had a say in
the chosen topic.

Cell-phone and Technology Policy:

As time continues on, technology is becoming more and more integral in our day to day lives. With that
being said, I believe the use of technology is sensible and important within the classroom. By using
technology, students are learning and practicing skills that will serve them well in their lives outside of
the classroom. Students are also generally engaged when they can combine classroom learning with
technology. That being said, I believe very strongly that the use of technology must be done in a sensible
and meaningful way, not just for the sake of doing so. By incorporating technology, such as the ways
suggested below, I hope that students will see science become more interesting. Rather than a discipline
or terms and facts to memorize, it should be viewed more as an exploration of content, changes, and
global contributions. Using technology may be a doorway into achieving this.

The first way I will seek to meet this is to use the computer lab/Chromebook cart when applicable. There
are many great scientific simulations and virtual labs that students can work through to either gain or
strengthen understandings.

Additionally, software such as office 365/Google Docs can be a powerful learning tool. The use of these
types of applications allows students to work simultaneously and see adaptations in real time. This is
very valuable for group work projects. This is also great for the transition from in-class work to
homework. Students that need extra time of certain assignments have these available through online
storage. This is a very beneficial collaborative tool that I will utilize in both science and health.

Cellphones are also an important consideration. I believe that if students have this tech. available on
their person, it can be used as a resource rather than a hindrance. That being said, explicit guidelines
must be put in place. As per school regulations, student phones are welcome in class but are to be
placed on their desk and left there untouched. As directed by the teacher, students can utilize their
phones for quick research or activities as deemed fit. One way that I will be using phones is through the
use of Kahoot. Students will answer short, anonymous quiz questions, a valuable approach to
formative/pre-assessment.

Academic Possibility:

School can be stressful. For some students, it is difficult to find a balance between home and school
which can cause academic difficulties. In an attempt to marginalize the academic pressures students
face, there are multiple strategies I will employ that correspond with school-wide practices.

First, I will have an open door policy. Students, whether seeking academic help or otherwise, will be able
to, and encouraged to, talk to me. I will ensure I am available before and after school, as well as for
periods of time during the lunch break to help students however I can. Those who may have struggled
with a concept will have opportunity to seek clarification on an individual basis.

To further promote student success, I will welcome students to do rewrites on test they feel they
underperformed on. This will be entirely optional for the student to decide. However, I believe that to
earn the right to rewrite a test, students should show that they are making efforts to improve. Because

of this, any student hoping to rewrite a test in my class will first need to see me outside of class time to
discuss their test and go over important points to study. All outstanding assignments for the unit must
also be handed in in order to qualify for a rewrite. This will force students who have fallen behind
schedule to study material more thoroughly while also getting assignments in to me.

To expand upon this idea, I will be lenient in the way I accept assignments. Assignments are due the day
specified, however, I will be flexible to account for other factors. Students who take advantage of this
leniency and continuously put off handing in assignments will spend time with me outside of class time
to get caught up on all assignments.

De-escalating Unproductive Behaviour:

It is important for the students to enjoy their time in the classroom, and interact with their peers to
provide a meaningful learning experience. Though this is the case, behaviour that distracts others and
takes away from the overall learning process within the classroom will be dealt with. In general,
students will first be given a verbal warning. If the behaviour persists they will be asked to step into the
hallway. I will then have a one-on-one conversation with the student in an attempt to resolve any issues.
If the situation still persists, students may be sent to the office. In agreement with the school initiative
on greater communication channels, I will actively work to maintain communications with parents
regarding these incidents. I will also be sure to communicate student successes to parents to encourage
and recognize positive contributions to the learning environment.
