Orientation includes an overview of:

- SBE & BCS goals, policies, and procedures

Orientation -

BCS programs and services
Professional development opportunities
Beginning Teachers are required
- The licensure process (initial to continuing)
to attend a formal orientation prior
to the start of the school year. - Optimal working conditions
- NC Teacher Evaluation Process
- NC & BCS Curricula Standards & guides
- Seclusion and Restraint guidelines
- Additional topics considered by BCS

NC Beginning Teacher Support Program Policies

BTs are to receive four observations per year:

Observations
three by an administrator
and one by a Peer Observer
(NOT you, the Peer MENTOR)

All BTs are to receive a summative

Evaluation
evaluation at the end of the school year
by an administrator.

Professional All BTs are required to develop a PDP


in collaboration with the Principal (or

How Mentors can Help Support Beginning Teachers
Share your best methods of parent
Check in frequently with your BT
communication with your BT
Assist your BT with beginning of school
Assist your BT in connecting with support
procedures
personnel: coaches, DLF's, EC specialists, ESL
teachers, counselors, etc.
Familiarize your BT with school facility
and personnel
Be conscious of high stress times in BT's first
year of teaching (see Phases of a Beginning
Help your BT locate supplies and
Teacher)
resources
Share your best methods of classroom
Assist your BT with their PDP
management strategies with your BT
Offer for your BT to observe you teach
Take time to reflect and celebrate the small
successes of your BT
