First Day of School Schedule

The main purpose of the first day of school will be to begin building our classroom
community through various ice breaker activities and read alouds, along with starting
to learn some of the many classroom procedures.

8:00-8:30

Students will arrive after each greeting the teacher and will look for their
names on each table group. This will be their base groups for the time being. They
will have some time to talk to one another and choose a team name for their table
group. Then, teacher will introduce herself by following the First Day of School
Script (see website). The teacher will also explain the expectations for when students
arrive each morning (see expectations tab for specific instructions).

8:30-9:00

Students will be introduced to the student job chart, where jobs will already
be given. Teacher will explain the responsibility of each job, and students will begin to
practice these during morning meeting, where a majority of the jobs take place.
Students will then greet each other with the given handshake (will change each
morning.

9:00-9:20

Read-aloud of the book First Grade Stinks! This will introduce the students to
first grade, and that even though it may be different from Kindergarten, they will have
a great time.

9:20-9:45

Teacher will begin to share procedures/various attention getters for


transitioning and regaining students attention. A few of these attention getters will
be practiced (for example, Linda Listen. Listen Linda!

9:45-10:00

Snack

10:00-10:15

Students will take place in a get-to-know you activity, called Where the Wind
Blows. Everyone sits in a circle with one person in the middle (teacher or student;
teacher for the first day). The person in the middle says "the wind blows towards
people who ___________". Everyone who matches up with what they said has to stand
up and swap seats with someone else. This will allow the students to see what things
they have in common with other students.

10:15-11:00

Students will write their first on demand writing piece. This will help the
teacher get to know more about the students/their academic abilities, and further the
students into the transition into being back in school. Students will write a response
to This summer, I.. The will be told to include as much detail as they can.

11:00-11:15

Teacher will practice with the students how to line up. Students will be told to
stand in front of their cubbies, and once they are in line with the appropriate
belongings, they will sing together their ready for the hall song (see this song in the
procedure #1 lesson plan).

11:15-11:45

Lunch

11:45-12:15

Recess

12:15-12:30

Relaxation/Quiet Time- students will have this time to quietly play with clay,
draw on their whiteboards, look at a book, or sit quietly.

12:30-12:50

Teacher will read aloud the book, Fantastic Elastic Brain to begin introducing
the idea that our brains are continuously growing and that its not that we cant do
something, its just that we cant do it yet, emphasizing that practice makes perfect!

12:50-1:30

Teacher will give students a tour of the classroom to show them where
materials belong. Following this, a tour of the school will also be given, with the
teacher pointing out specific rooms/places (gym, library, office, etc.)

1:30-2:00

Students and teacher will work together to come up with the classroom rules.
Teacher will ultimately have in mind rules that should be included, but student input
will also be respected and any additional rules that they come up with that the teacher
did not have in mind will be included.
2:00-2:30

Special

2:30-3:00

Teacher will explain the procedures for how to pack up (wait for your table
group to be called, check your mailbox, put all papers in take home folder, put take
home folder in book bag, and bring book bag to table). Then, students will pack up and
get dismissed.
