N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Daniel Hermosillo Date of Activity: September 23 &30, 2017

Faculty name: Mary OConnell

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):

For this assignment I attended two events, the first event I attended was a community

service event on September 23rd hosted by the Red Cross of Tucson, which was called Sound

the Alarm for a total of 4 hours. This event was created with the intent of providing fire safety

information and installing smoke detectors in the homes of low income families in Tucson. At

the end of the event there were over 350 smoke alarms installed with over 100 volunteers

participating. My role as a volunteer was to install smoke alarms with the help of 2 other people

in my group of 3. In each group there are 1 to 2 people providing information and the 3rd person

(which was me) specifically installed the smoke alarms.

The second event was professional event called Mass Causality Training that was

hosted by a member of the medical reserve on September 30th. During this event we learned

about how to react during mass shootings and we were learning this because as medical

professional we are at increased danger for enduring events like these. The specific reason why I

attended this event was to gain professional knowledge I can use throughout my life to handle

unforeseen situations like angered individuals or active shooters.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

The Sound the Alarm event was held at the Red Cross facility and then volunteers went

out to the community, and the event lasted 4 hours. The second event I attended, Mass Casualty

Training was held at the Red Cross facility in Tucson and the event lasted 4 hours.
Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).
The Sound the Alarm was valuable to me because it allowed me to give back to my

community and it allowed me to see how much our community of Tucson needs events like

these. Overall, this event opened my perspective on how I can impact and help the community

besides being a nurse.

The Mass Casualty Training event was valuable information that I will use throughout

my life, which makes this experience priceless. As nurse you hope events like mass

shooting/causalities never occur but at the same time you need to be prepared. Therefore, by

knowing how to respond in critical situations like a mass shooting, I view this event as a valuable

learning experience

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)

I would recommend the Sound the Alarm and Mass Casualty Training events to

future nursing students because both events helped open my perspective and increase my

knowledge on important topics, being fire safety and personal safety. Also, these lessons and

information gained from both events can be used and valuable for any health care professional,

since nurses and other medical professionals care for burn and gunshot wound patients.
