Introduction

Above picture is Robert Kuok Hock Nien (). He is Malaysia Chinese and born at
Malaysia Johor at 6 October 1923. He is a very successful entrepreneur because he has a lot of
nick name such as Hotel tycoon, King of Sugar and so on. Moreover he have a lot of
business such as plantation, manufacture of sugar, flour, fodder, oil, mining, toreal estate,
finance, hotels, industry, trade and shipping and so on. The most success of business is sugar,
hotel, rice and palm oil as well. Robert also controls 80% of sugar in Malaysia and 20% in
worldwide.
Tan Sri Robert Kuok is the Malaysia's richest man in Malaysia. Tan Sri Robert Kuok's father is
from Fujian, China, he is a commodities trader who arrived in Malaysia in 1909. Tan Sri Robert
Kuok was the youngest of three brothers. Three of them are studying in Raffles Institution in
Singapore. Besides that, Tan Sri Robert Kouk had the chance to learn his English communication
skill and this help him business.
When he finishes his studies Robery Kuok was worked in grains department of Mitsubishi. After
his father pass away, Robert Kuok and his two brothers start their own empire and name it as
Kuok Brother Sdn Bhd in 1949. It is a trading in agricuoture commodities. Under government
helping Kuok Brother Sdn Bhd start to their sugar business, after few 10 years this company
starts controlling the sugar industry all over the world

In 1962, Robert Kuok was facing problem that China sugar prices is cheaper than Robert Kuok.
After that, Robert Kuok was provided a solution to take over the sugar supply in India and keep
on investing in sugar refinery. After that, Robert Kuok Company every year produce ton of sugar
and start controlling the sugar industry.

Above is the logo of Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore and Hong Kong. In 1971, Robert Kuok
establish he first hotel empire Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore. In 1977 Robert Kuok starts to begin
his real estate properties in Hong Kong. Robert Kuok first project of real estate property in Hong
Kong was Tsim Sha Tsui East waterfront and he builds his second hotel name as Kowloon Shangri-
La.
In October 2009, Tan Sri Robert Kuok's PPB Group issued a statement to Bursa Malaysia, stating
that it has decided to sell its sugar units to Felda, along with the land used to cultivate sugarcane,
for RM1.29 billion.
Until currently Robert Kuok net worth 10.2 billion and he still is Malaysia richest man state by
Forbes.

Shangri-La Hotel
Shangri-La Hotel is one of the successful hotels in Asia. Shangri-La Hotel is a 5 star hostel as
well. Headquarter of this hotel at Hong Kong. Shangri-La Hotel mainly focuses on
Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Singapore, London, Los Angeles, New
York, Sydney, Tokyo, Melbourne, Dubai and so on. Shangri-La this hotel name was naming it
by one of Robert Kuok French friend.
At that time, most of the business of Robert Kuok is trading. Hotel is a selling service so the
services are produce by worker. Robert Kuok release that worker is present the hotel so he talk in
the meeting of board of director said that he was take huge responsibility to their worker.
In 1983 the first Shangri-La hotel was remodeled in Hangzhou. That time he believes one day
China will be the most prosperous tourism industry. That is because of China have a lot of
historical relics and sites. When he first time came to China tourism, the facilities of tourist was
very bad especially toilet and place to stay. He was thinking such facilities how to attract
international tourist so he feel China tourism must develop. Robert Kuok was feeling Hangzhou
criterion is totally very bad but he still insists to develop.
Kuok Brother Sdn Bhd
In 1963 Robert Kuok was make a mistake. In that year of May and June he bought around one to
two million ton of sugar because he thought the market price will be stable or raise the price.
Until July and August the sugar price was start to drop price. The reality and he thought was
totally different so it makes the company huge losses. If that time the company capital is not
enough it will lead to be bankrupt. He was very worries, until end of August have a very strong
typhoon hit to Cuba. Cuba sugar cane plantation was destroy so it lead to sugar industries cant
produce sugar. That time Cuba was export a lot of sugar, every year Cuba was produce 5.5
million ton of sugar. At that year Cuba cant produce sugar so the international market price of
sugar starts to rise.
When Robert Kuok was young he can speak English very well so he can speaking English
supplier in London and New York. Everyday Robert Kuok will go around 5 to 6 supplier office.
At night he will invite one of the suppler families to have dinner together. During the dinner
Robert Kuok will try take out thinking of suppler and discuss it. After the discussion Robert
Kuok will telegraph to Singapore. After settle down everything and he wanted to sleep is around
midnight. Robert Kuok believes a lot of people are cleverer than him but they dont know how to
manage their night time. He wont sleep or take a nap on next day that why he can always be the
first person.

- -1942-1945 (age 18-21): Upon graduation, Robert Kuok worked in the grains department of
Mitsubishi, a Japanese industrial conglomerate Mitsubishi.
- - 1948 (age 24): Robert Kuok's father died.
- -1949 (age 25): Robert Kuok and his 2 brothers founded Kuok Brothers Sdn Bhd, trading in
agricultural commodities. Under the new post-colonial government, Kuok started in the sugar
business alongside the government.
-1961 (age 37): Robert Kuok made a coup by buying cheap sugar from India before the prices shot
up. He continued to invest heavily in sugar refineries, controlled 80% of the Malaysian sugar
market with production of 1.5 million tonnes, equivalent to 10% of world production, and so
earned his nickname "Sugar King of Asia".
- -1971 (age 47): Robert Kuok built his first Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore.
- -1977 (age 53): Robert Kuok made his first foray into Hong Kong property, when he acquired a
plot of land on the newly reclaimed Tsim Sha Tsui East waterfront. Here, he built his 2nd hotel,
the Kowloon Shangri-La.
-1985, November 22: Robert Kuok won the Golden Pyramid award that made him the Malaysian
Entrepreneur for 1985. His son, Khoon Ean, received the award from Acting Prime Minister Datuk
Musa Hitam on behalf of his father.
- -1993 (age 69):Robert Kuok's Kerry Group acquired a 34.9% stake in the South China Morning
Post from Murdoch's News Corporation.
April 1: Robert Kuok officially retired from the Kerry Group and currently resides in Hong Kong.
-2009, October 31 (age 86): Robert Kuok's PBB Group issued a statement Bursa Malaysia that it
has decided to dispose of its sugar units, along with land used to cultivate sugarcane, to Felda for
RM1.29 billion.
-2010 (age 87): Robert Kuok delisted Allgreen Properties Singapore, and Jerneh Asia in Malaysia
by buying back all shares.
- -2011 (age 88): Forbes valued Robert Kuok's personal wealth at US$12.4 billion, ranking him at
No. 1 on the Forbes list of Malaysia's Richest.
- -2016 (age 93): Forbes valued Robert Kuok's personal wealth at US$10.2 billion, ranking him at
No. 1 on the Forbes list of Malaysia's Richest.
