Internet Enabled Wireless Water Metering System

This package explains the costs and benefits of installing and operating the Fair Share
internet enabled automated wireless water metering system.

How it works:

1) A water meter, with digital output, is installed in each unit.

2) A microprocessor with wireless transmitter is attached to each water meter in each unit.
3) A central computer with wireless receiver and cell network data uplink is installed in a secure
location to receive and store all water meter data.
3) On a regular basis, an offsite Fair Share computer contacts the control unit and downloads all
the water usage data to a secure database.
4) At every billing period the Fair Share computer calculates the total amount of water used by
each unit and sends an invoice to each unit owner based on their water consumption and the
price of water and sewage.

Benefit Summary:

- a fair billing based on personal water usage that encourages water conservation and
rewards low water users with savings
- real time monitoring which uncovers problems such as water leaks, free running water,
and water meter tampering
- independent monitoring of total condominium water usage, to detect if the city meter is
over billing
- licensed and insured installation with warranty for trouble free performance

Benefits:
1) Fair billing based on personal water usage that encourages water conservation and
rewards low water users with savings

Example: Compare the savings at one condominium where one unit is a banquet hall and the
other unit is a sign making shop. (Based on a 10 unit condominium with an
average water bill of $1,000)

Before Fair Share After Fair Share

(Divide all Water Equally) (Individual Water
Measurement)
Banquet Hall $100 $800
Sign Making Shop $100 $22.22

That’s a savings for the Sign Making Shop of $933.36 per year!

2) Real time monitoring which uncovers problems such as water leaks, free running water,
and water meter tampering and saves dollars

Example: The sprinkler system at one condominium was leaking even when
turned off. Fair Share detected the leak and it was fixed. The sprinkler
was leaking about 5 gal / hour or 43,000 a year! Fixing the leak saved
the condominium over $300 per year!

3) Independent monitoring of total condominium water usage, to detect if the city meter is
over billing

Example: At one condominium the Fair Share system showed that the city meter
was over reading by 50%. This meant that the condominium was paying
$1,500/month when they should have been paying $1,000/month.
That meant a savings of $6,000 per year!

How the Billing System Works

1) Every billing period the Fair Share computer compiles the total water usage for each unit
over the time period of the last bill. The price for water and sewage is taken from the last
water bill received from the city. The cost for each unit is calculated by multiplying the price
per gal of water by the amount of water the unit has consumed.

3) Fair Share mails a bill to each unit owner showing the amount of water used, the price per
gallon of water, and the total cost for water.

4) Fair Share mails a full report to the property manager that includes the total amount to be
collected from each unit and the total amount of GST for each unit.

4) The unit owner then pays the condominium the amount listed on the bill.

5) Fair Share then bills the condominium for the water system service fees of all the units.

Water Metering System Security and Backup

There are four levels of backup and security on the water metering system:

1) All water meters have a tamper proof analog dial display which may be read physically at
each unit.
2) All water meter data is saved on a microchip in the wireless transmitter.
3) All water data is stored in the on-site computer. The on-site computer has backup battery
power which will allow the system to continue to monitor after any power interruption.
4) The Fair Share server connects to the on-site computer on a regular basis to download all the
water meter data into a secure database and to ensure that the system is fully operational.

Standard Installation Information:

- The installation shall be carried out from the time of 8 am to 5 pm, any additional work
after hours would be charged accordingly
- access DELAYS or NO access to the units may incur extra installation charges for that
unit
- permits and city inspections are available on request at an extra charge
