Research Exploration and Proposal

The research topic that I would like to do is Eating Disorders. It is a very

basic and generic topic, but after being effected by it through out some of my time

here at UC. It became a topic that wasnt so basic or genic to me. It became an

interesting topic to me and it made me want to be able to help others that are at risk

for eating disorders. What I went through was hard on me physically and

emotionally, something that I would never want someone else to have to deal with. I

feel like its a topic that is overlooked, and people arent aware of how prevalent it is,

especially to the younger population. Eating disorders are something that you can

search all over for, the main thing that I will use to do research will be scholarly

articles along with webpages such as: National Eating Disorder Association, Medline

Plus and other resourceful websites. The question I have is how do we lower the

rate of eating disorders here in America, how are different ways that we can try to

change the view of what America thinks a perfect body is. In athletics eating

disorders are a common thing, after being an athlete and having an eating disorder

while being an athlete, I want to help other athletes get help faster. Ive done

research for the UC Sports Medicines program and with the information that I put

together about eating disorders it will just be another resource that they can use for

this specific topic. A discourse community that would be related to eating disorders

would be the National Eating Disorder Association; I also would say that any

association that tries to put out information about eating disorders and the negative

effects that they have on people would also be a discourse community. Its hard to

say who is exactly speaking about these issues since they are web based, but I would

say that Health Educations speak about this issues. Their jobs are to inform the

community of what the issue is and how to prevent it. With most of the associations

I am pretty familiar with, after going through it I became very interested in the topic

of eating disorders that made me branch out and learn more about them, they way I

learned more was through just researching and reading on them through the

websites found on Google or articles. Different things that I will be looking at will be

interviews, blogs, newspaper articles, photos, and documentaries. For scholarly

sources I use the tab under Google labeled scholar then also the UCs offers

scholarly articles that are available online.
