The Gojoseon(Old Joseon) kingdom, founded in 2333 B.C.E.

, eventually stretched from the

peninsula to much of Manchuria.[2] By the third century B.C.E., it disintegrated into many
successor states.

Habaek (), the god of the Yalu River, had three daughters: Yuhwa (), Hweonhwa
(/), and Wuihwa (). The eldest of his daughters, Yuhwa, was confronted by Hae Mo-
su while she was bathing in a river, and eventually she married him without her father's permission.
Outraged by the act, Yuhwa's father challenged Hae Mosu to a duel of metamorphosis.
Habaek transformed into a carp, a deer, and a quail, only to be caught by Hae Mo-su when he
transformed into an otter, a wolf, and a hawk respectively. Defeated and recognizing Hae Mo-su's
supremacy, Habaek consented to the marriage.
However, after the official marriage ceremony was held, Yuhwa escaped Hae Mo-su's chariot before
they could ascend to heaven and she returned to her father. Because his daughter's actions brought
disgrace to him, Habaek had her lips stretched out and he exiled her to a stream in Dongbuyeo,
condemning her to a mortal life.
Yuhwa was later freed by fishermen, who brought her to the local king, Geumwa.

Geumwa was the second ruler (48 BCE 7 BCE) ofDongbuyeo. (East Buyeo), an ancient kingdom
of Korea Hae Buru was old and without an heir, when he found a gold-colored frog-like (or a gold-
colored snail-like) child under a large rock near Lake Gonyeon. Hae Buru named the child Geumwa,
meaning golden frog(or golden snail), and later made him crown prince.. Her beauty and intelligence
impressed Geumwa and he took her as a concubine. When she was exposed to sunlight, Yuhwa
gave birth to an egg, which later turned into Jumong.
Upon her death, Lady Yuhwa was given the posthumous title of Queen Mother.
Growing up, Jumong was constantly slandered by Geumwas sons, who were jealous of his talents
in archery. On the advice of his mother, he fled Dongbuyeo to reunify the Gojoseon territories thatd
been broken up by the Han Chinese. Legend has it that as he crossed a great river to go southward,
turtles and other creatures of the sea gathered to form a bridge especially for him. He quickly
attained a following and established Goguryeo in 37 BCE. He then conquered the neighboring
kingdoms of Malgal and Biryu, with Haengin and Northern Okjeo soon following.
During Jumongs conquests, his mother, first wife, and son remained back in Dongbuyeo, where his
mother eventually fell ill and died. When he heard of his mothers death, he sent for his first wife and
son, Ye and Yuri, who arrived five years later. Ye became queen, causing Jumongs second wife

3A Soseono to become extremely jealous and flee southward with her son, who became the first
king of the Baekjae Kingdom. Biryu Biryu (?-?) was the second son of Jumong and So Seo-no, and
older brother of Onjo, the traditionally recognized founder of Baekje (18 BCE660 CE), which was
one of theThree Kingdoms of Korea. In an alternate legend, Biryu himself is described as the
founder of Baekje.

Jumong died soon afterwards at the age of 40.

King Yuri (? - 18 CE, r. 19 BCE - 18 CE)[1] was the second ruler of Goguryeo, the northernmost of
the Three Kingdoms of Korea. He was the eldest son of the kingdom's founderKing
Dongmyeongseong. As with many other early Korean rulers, the events of his life are known largely
from theSamguk Sagi.

The collapse of Gojoseon spawned the creation of the small kingdoms of the Proto-Three
Kingdom period, which later coalesced into the mightier kingdoms of Goguryeo, Baekje,
and Silla, inaugurating the Three Kingdoms Period around the time of Jesus. While Goguryeo
and Baekje had great power for much of the era, Silla's power gradually extended across Korea,
eventually establishing the first unified state to cover most of Korean peninsula by 668 C.E.,
beginning the Unified Silla period.
