BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

1. Pre-K/ CCSD K-2nd Grade Core Standards:

(1)1.17 develop vocabulary through meaningful experiences (e.g. wide reading, discussion of
word meanings, interactive activities, examples and non-examples)

2. Objectives:
SWBAT Learn parts of their body by drawing a line from the word and the body part on a
worksheet.
SWBAT: Learn new vocabulary words.
SWBAT: Use colors accordingly.

3. Materials/Equipment: Book: Parts, Worksheet, pencil, white board dry erase


markers and crayons.

4. Teaching:
A. Reading the book: Introduce the book by reading the title. Ask the
children how the little boy on the cover feels. Does he feel happy? Sad?
Scared?
Pause throughout the book to discuss why the little boy is scared. Ask the
children, Would you be scared too?.

B. Extension activity: Pull out your pencils, we are going to use our vocabulary
words in our activity today. Go up to the board and write down the word Ear. What word
is this? Point to your ear! Do that with all the vocabulary words, eye, nose, leg, mouth, feet,
foot, arm, shoulder, knee, head, body, feet, boy, girl.
Hand out the worksheet.
Instruct students to write if they are a boy or a girl at the top of the page.
Instruct students to choose a boy or a girl and then to draw a line from the word to the
body part.
Lastly, instruct students to color their picture according to the colors labeled.
5. Closure: Play Head Shoulders Knees and Toes on the computer and have the
class do the motions. Ask students:
Will you be scared when you lose your teeth now?
What is scary to you about growing up?
What is your favorite body part? Mine is my elbow!
