[1] Those who are willing to be engaged in basic and clinical advanced research in medicine, dentistry,
pharmaceutical science, and health science

Privacy Policy

Applicants personal information obtained through student selection (name, date of birth, sex, and other
private information, etc.) will be used for the purposes of selecting students, notifying, and processing their
admission.
After admission, the school will use this information for the purposes of supporting students life
(application for scholarships, tuition waiver, etc.), as well as investigation or study (such as investigation or
analysis for potential improvements in admission examinations and application trend). Private information
will not be used for other purposes or provided to people other than relevant staff of our school.

Graduate School of Biomedical & Health Sciences, Hiroshima University is accepting Doctoral Course-seeking applicants for April, 2018
enrollment in the following divisions.
These guidelines are also valid for students who advance from the Masters Course offered at the Graduate School, but they should read
each item of requirements carefully. Some items, including selection methods, can differ from those for applicants who completed a
program in other graduate schools.

2. Eligibility for Application


(1) Those who have completed the maximum number of years needed for completion of a 6-year curriculum in medicine, dentistry,
pharmaceutical science, or veterinary medicine at the faculties of medicine, dentistry, pharmaceutical science, or veterinary
medicine of a university.
(2) Those who hold a bachelors degree (in the field of medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine) from the National Institution for
Academic Degrees and University Evaluation in accordance with the provision in Paragraph 4 of Article 104 of the Law.
(3) Those who have completed an 18-year school curriculum education program (with the last field of study being medicine, dentistry,
pharmaceutical science, or veterinary medicine) in an overseas country.
(4) Those who have earned by earning the credit(s) of a correspondence course of education provided by a school of a foreign country
in Japan and completed a 18 year school curriculum education program (with the last study field being medicine, dentistry,
pharmaceutical science, or veterinary medicine).
(5) Those who have completed an undergraduate course at an educational institution in Japan that is deemed to have courses offered
by an overseas university according to the educational system of that country, and that has also been designated by the Minister of
Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. (Such courses are limited to courses whose graduates are regarded as having
completed 18 years of school education in the respective foreign country [with the last study field being medicine, dentistry,
pharmaceutical science, or veterinary medicine]).
(6) Those appointed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (Ministry of Education Notice
No. 39 of 1955)
[1] Those who have studied medicine or dentistry at the medical or dentistry faculty of a university prescribed by the old University
Ordinance (Imperial Ordinance No. 388 of 1918), and who have graduated from either of these faculties.
[2] Those who have graduated from the National Defense Medical College according to the Act for Establishment of the Ministry
of Defense (Act No. 164 of 1954).
[3] Those who have completed a masters course or a professional degree course prescribed by Paragraph 2 of Article 99 of the
School Education Law (No. 26 of 1947) and those who are eligible to receive a masters degree, as well as those who have
been enrolled for at least two years in a doctoral course that is neither categorized as a two-year masters course nor a three-year
doctoral course, who have undertaken at least 30 academic credits in addition to the required research guidance (including those
falling under Article 6-1 of the Academic Degree Regulations [Education Ministry Ordinance No. 9, 1953] prior to amendment

according to the Ministerial Ordinance on the Partial Amendment of the Academic Degree Regulations [Education Ministry
Ordinance No. 29 of 1974]), and who are deemed by the Graduate School or relevant department to have academic ability
equivalent or superior to that of a graduate of a university medicine, dentistry, or pharmaceutical science course, of which the
main purpose is to develop practical skills regarding clinical fields or a graduate of a university veterinary medicine course.
[4] Those who, after graduating from university (excluding courses in medicine, dentistry, pharmaceutical science, or veterinary
medicine) or completing 16 years of overseas curricular education, have undertaken at least two years of research at a university
or research institute and are deemed by the Graduate School on the basis of their research accomplishments to have academic
ability equivalent or superior to that of a graduate of a university medicine, dentistry, or pharmaceutical science course of which
the main purpose is to develop practical skills regarding clinical fields or a graduate of a university veterinary medicine course.
(7) In accordance with the provision in Paragraph 2 of Article 102 of the Law, individuals who have enrolled at a graduate school
(only medicine, dentistry, pharmaceutical science, or veterinary medicine programs qualify), and who are recognized as having
sufficient academic ability to study at the Graduate School.
(8) Those who are recognized by the Graduate School as having academic ability equivalent or superior to those who have graduated
from a university, and who have reached 24 years of age(such recognition is done on a case-by-case basis and is based on the
qualifications of each applicants)
(9) Those who enrolled at the faculties of medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine of a university, or have taken pharmaceutical
science courses whose main purpose is to cultivate clinically related practical skills for at least four years (including those who
received a designation by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan as individuals with similar
qualifications), and have obtained credits stipulated by the Graduate School with excellent marks.
(10) Those who are expected to obtain one of the qualifications described above March 31, 2018 for the April enrollment.
Note 1: Those who have completed (or are expected to complete) a Masters Course should inquire from the contact on the last
page in advance, as their eligibility for application must be preliminarily evaluated.
Note 2: Those who enter the program under the above eligibility criterion (9) after having been enrolled in a university at least
four years but not having graduated will be regarded as having left the university without graduation. a) Applicants
must have earned more than 75% of all credits necessary for graduation from university by the end of the fourth year.
b) Grades of more than 90% of all credits that applicants have earned should be A and better.
Different conditions will apply to 4th year students in our School of Medicine who are willing to enroll in the MD-PhD
course in the Graduate School. (Please refer to Guidance for Admission to the joint MD-PhD Course in School of
Medicine and Graduate School of Biomedical & Health Sciences, Hiroshima University)

3. Preliminary Evaluation for Application Eligibility


Those who enter under the above eligibility (6)-[3], (6)-[4], (7), (8), or (9) should be evaluated for the eligibility in advance, so
please submit necessary documents to the address shown on the last page by 5:00 PM on Friday, December 1, 2017 and apply
after receiving the evaluation.
(1) Documents required for submission

[2] Certificate of Past Research Activity: Use (and fill in) the prescribed form.
[3] Summary of Past Research and Clinical Activities etc.: Use (and fill in) the prescribed form.

[5] Certificate of Graduation: Must be issued by a university or college president or dean.
[6] Self-addressed Stamped Envelope: Write in your address and name on a standard size envelope (23.5 cm 12 cm) and affix
an 82-yen stamp.
*Academic Transcript issued by a university or college president or dean can be replaced with the above documents from [2] to
[5], for those who enter the program under the above eligibility criterion (10).
(2) Notification of evaluation result will be sent by postal mail on Friday, December 22, 2017.
(3) Any questions regarding application eligibility should be inquired to the Student Support Group listed on the last page.

4. Application Procedure
(1) Application period
From Thursday, January 4, 2018 to 5:00 PM on Thursday, January 11, 2018, without exception
If an applicant brings the documents in person, the Student Support Group will be open from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The office will
be closed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
If the documents are sent by postal mail, send them by registered express mail and write Enc. an Application Form for the
Doctoral Course in the Graduate School of Biomedical & Health Sciences (Admission in October) or (Admission in April) in
red letters on the envelope.
*It is not necessary to re-submit documents that are once submitted for preliminary evaluation for application eligibility.

Please note that applicants must pay the issuing fee for the Online Verification Report (2 / certificate) by themselves. Also
be sure that there are 20 or more days left until the expiration date of the online verification at the time of its submission.
Note 3: Find the application fee transfer request form of Hiroshima University (deposit slip) [a prescribed form], and make sure to fill
in the applicants name and address within the bold frames in each sheet of the slip; the Application Fee Form for
Admission, the reserve copy for the applicants, and the application fee transfer request form (deposit slip). Make the remittance
from a city or local bank.
(To pay from Japan Post Bank or a post office (hereinafter referred to as the Japan Post Bank), an additional procedure will
be required, such as copying information in a transfer request form designated by the Japan Post Bank. For details, please
present the enclosed transfer request form (deposit slip) to the counter of the Japan Post Bank for consultation. Please note that
this transfer cannot be processed from any ATM of banks, including that of the Japan Post Bank.)
Bank transfer fee must be paid by a payer.
The payment will be valid only if a banks seal dated no later than January 11, 2018 (the deadline of the application period)
is placed in the field of financial institutions seal, so please check open hours of a city or local bank before making the
payment.
The Application Fee Form for Admission (certificate of application fee payment) must be pasted on the corresponding field
of the Application Form for Admission before submission.

(4) Application method for applicants with physical disabilities


Applicants with physical disabilities, who require special considerations for taking the examination or studying, must submit the
report for advance consultation (A4, no prescribed form), to the address listed on the last page:

Note 1: Use of bilingual dictionaries (except electronic dictionaries) is permitted in the foreign language examination.
Note 2: Those who have completed the Masters Course in the Graduate School will be exempted from the written examination of a
foreign language.
Note 3: Those who enter the program directly from the Masters Course in the Graduate School will be exempted from the written
examination of a foreign language, although the rest of academic examinations will be the same as for General Selection.

7. Standard Criteria for Marking, Evaluation, and Acceptance


Overall results of academic examinations and transcripts are comprehensively considered for selection.
Applicants are not accepted if each score of foreign language (English), specialized subject, and oral examination is less than 60% of
the average of all applicants.
Academic transcripts from the graduating university or college will be evaluated by reviewers and considered together with results of
academic examinations.

8. Special Provision on Educational Method


If applicants continue to work after enrolling in the program, special treatment may be introduced under Article 14 of the Standards
for the Establishment of Graduate Schools, so they can perform their job duties while studying in the Graduate School (graduate
schools may, if necessary from an educational standpoint, provide education through appropriate means, which include conducting
classes or research guidance in the evening, other certain hours and periods. This system is hereinafter referred to as the special
provision under Article 14).
Classes may be conducted in the evening or on Saturdays to facilitate their studies. Research guidance may be given in the evening,
on Saturdays, and/or during summer/winter holidays, besides via the information network. A course registration plan may be
developed with instruction of an academic supervisor.
Applicants, who wish to join the course and use the special provision under Article 14, should clarify it in the Application Form for
Admission.
To apply the special provision under Article 14 during the program, or to discontinue it during the program, they can switch with
approvals first from their supervisor and then from the dean of the Graduate School.

9. Announcement of Successful Applicants


Scheduled at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 23, 2018
Successful examinee numbers will be posted on the bulletin board in front of the Basic and Sociomedical
Research Building, and also on the Hiroshima University website, and successful applicants will also receive a
notice by postal mail.
No inquiry about the examination results is accepted by phone or any other contact methods.

10. Notes
(1) Changes in application documents are never accepted once they are received.
(2) Application documents and fee cannot be returned for any reason once they are received.
(3) Private information submitted upon application will not be used for a purpose other than admission selection.
(4) Applicants must consult with a prospective academic supervisor before application.
(5) Applicants who will maintain their job during attendance to the program must submit Approval for Enrollment (prescribed
form) upon admission procedure.
(6) Details including precautions for examinations will be sent together with an examination admission card,
and displayed at the Basic and Sociomedical Research Building on the day before the examination.
(7) If applicants, who enrolled at the faculty of medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine in any university for four years and longer,
have obtained credits stipulated by the Graduate School with excellent marks, their status will be registered withdrawn from
the undergraduate school on the record.
Therefore, such applicants must be warned that they will not be eligible for taking some national qualification tests and other
examinations that require graduation from an undergraduate school.
(8) Long-Term Completion of Curricula System
The Graduate School provides a system, which facilitates them to take courses according to a plan and complete the program over
a certain period that is longer than a standard term, to support applicants who enroll in the program while in employment (regular
employment) or engagement with housework, child rearing, or nursing at home, as well as applicants who enroll in the program
from Senior Citizens Selection. Under this system, the total tuition of the standard term is divided by the number of years admitted
to complete the program according to a plan and paid in installments. For more details, such as maximum terms accepted for the
Long-Term Completion of Curricula, please inquire the student support group.

11. Admission Procedure


Successful Applicants shall submit necessary documents and pay specified amount of fees within the period of admission procedure
(We will notify you of the detail.).

[1] Any paid fee will not be returned for any reason.
[2] The above fees are as of October 2017. Any new tuition fee will be applied if the tuition fees are changed during enrollment.
[3] Fees for admission and tuition will be waived for selected students based on Hiroshima Universitys family income criteria and
academic criteria. We will notify you of the detail.
[4] Admission Fee is not charged for applicants who advance from the Masters Course of the Graduate School.

(2) Hiroshima University Excellent Student Scholarship


Hiroshima University has the second semester tuition exemption system to the students with excellent academic performance. They
will be selected based on research results and other achievements during the program.

Admission Policy

[1] Those who are willing to deepen their knowledge in medicine and oral health science and acquire
the abilities to promote education and / or research in oral health science
[2] Those who are willing to be active educators in universities or colleges, researchers who promote
food and nutrition education and / or knowledge in health, or educators / researchers with high
expertise who disseminates a clinical system based on both IT and knowledge of molecular
biology

Health Sciences Major) for April 2018 enrollment in the following divisions.
These guidelines are also valid for students who advance from the Masters Course offered at the Graduate School, but they should read
each item of requirements carefully. Some items, including selection methods, can differ from those for applicants who completed a
program in other graduate schools.

(1) Those who hold a masters degree or a professional degree (as determined in Article 5-2, Rules for Degrees [Ordinance of the
Ministry of Education No. 9 in 1953] based on the provision in Paragraph 1 of Article 104 of the Law. The same applies below.)
(2) Those who hold a degree equivalent to a masters or professional degree abroad
(3) Those who hold a degree equivalent to a masters or professional degree, by earning the credit(s) of a correspondence course of
education provided by a school of that foreign country in Japan
(4) Those who hold a degree equivalent to a masters or professional degree, by completing a masters course at an educational
institution in Japan that is deemed to have courses offered by an overseas graduate school according to the educational system of
that country, and that has also been designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
(5) Those who hold a degree equivalent to a masters by completing a course in the United Nations University
(6) Those who have completed a course at an overseas school, educational institution designated in the above (4), or the United
Nations University, and are recognized as having academic ability equivalent or superior to those who acquired a masters degree
by passing an examination or equivalent to an examination that is prescribed by article 16-(2) of the Standards for Establishment
of Graduate Schools
(7) Those appointed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (Ministry of Education Notice
No. 118 of 1989)
[1] Those who, after graduating from university or college, have undertaken at least two years of research at a university, college,
or research institute, and are deemed by the Graduate School on the basis of their research accomplishments to have academic
ability equivalent or superior to those who acquired a masters or professional degree
[2] Those who, after completing 16 years of overseas curricular education, or after completing it by earning the credit(s) of a
correspondence course of education provided by a school of that foreign country in Japan, have undertaken at least two years
of research at a university, college, or research institute, and are deemed by the Graduate School on the basis of their research
accomplishments to have academic ability equivalent or superior to those who acquired a masters or professional degree
(8) Those who are recognized by the Graduate School as having academic ability equivalent or superior to those who have
graduated from a university, and who have reached 24 years of age(such recognition is done on a case-by-case basis and is based
on the qualifications of each applicants)
(9) Those who are expected to obtain one of the qualifications described above by March 31, 2018 for the April enrollment.

4. Application Procedure

7. Standard Criteria for Marking, Evaluation, and Acceptance


Overall results of academic examinations and transcripts are comprehensively considered for selection.
Applicants are not accepted if each score of foreign language (English), specialized subject, and oral examination is less than 60% of
the average of all applicants.
Academic transcripts from the graduating university or college will be evaluated by reviewers and considered together with results of
academic examinations.

8. Special Provision on Educational Method


If applicants continue to work after enrolling in the program, special treatment may be introduced under Article 14 of the Standards
for the Establishment of Graduate Schools, so they can perform their job duties while studying in the Graduate School (graduate
schools may, if necessary from an educational standpoint, provide education through appropriate means, which include conducting
classes or research guidance in the evening, other certain hours, or other periods. This system is hereinafter referred to as the special
provision under Article 14).
Classes may be conducted in the evening or on Saturdays to facilitate their studies. Research guidance may be given in the evening,
on Saturdays, and/or during summer/winter holidays, besides via the information network. A course registration plan may be
developed with instruction of an academic supervisor.

(regular employment) or engagement with housework, child rearing, or nursing at home, as well as applicants who enroll in the
program from Senior Citizens Selection. Under this system, the total tuition of the standard term is divided by the number of
years admitted to complete the program according to a plan and paid in installments. For more details, such as maximum terms

institution in Japan that is deemed to have courses offered by an overseas graduate school according to the educational system of
that country, and that has also been designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
(5) Those who hold a degree equivalent to a masters by completing a course in the United Nations University
(6) Those who have completed a course at an overseas school, educational institution designated in the above (4), or the United Nations
University, and are recognized as having academic ability equivalent or superior to those who acquired a masters degree by
passing an examination or equivalent to an examination that is prescribed by article 16-(2) of the Standards for Establishment of
Graduate Schools
(7) Those appointed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (Ministry of Education Notice No.

[1] Those who, after graduating from university or college, have undertaken at least two years of research at a university, college, or
research institute, and are deemed by the Graduate School on the basis of their research accomplishments to have academic ability
