Calculus: Integration of Volumes of Revolution

Q1 Find the volume of the solid obtained by rotating about the yaxis the region bounded by y = 2x2 x3
and y = 0.
We first note that y = 2x2 x3 crosses the x axis (that is, y = 0) at x = 0 and x = 2 (found from x3 = 2x2 ).
Thus we have found the x bounds for the integral.

Q2 Find the volume of the solid obtained by rotating about the yaxis the region between y = x and y = x2 .
Here we see that y = x2 intersects with y = x when x = 0 and x = 1. Thus we have found the x bounds for
the integral.

Q3 Find the volume of the solid obtained by rotating the region bounded by y = x x2 and y = 0 about the
line x = 2. Here we see that y = x x2 intersects the xaxis when x = 0 and x = 1. Thus we have found the
x bounds for the integral.

Q4 Find the volume generated by rotating (about the yaxis) the region bounded by y = 1/x and y = 0 over
the range 1 x 2.
Here we are told that the x bounds are x = 1 and x = 2.

Q5 Find the volume of the solid obtained by rotating the region bounded by y = 4x x2 and y = 8x 2x2
about the line x = 2.
The curves intersect at x = 0 and x = 4. Thus we have found the x bounds for the integral.
