Population in 2016:
In the Russell Byers zip code (19103), there was a total population of 21,501 people in 2016.

Population of families in Russell Byers area: 2015 vs 2000:

The amount of families in the Russell Byers neighborhood has stayed stably at around 193 or less. However, there is
a difference outside of the Russell Byerss border. It seems as though more families have moved to the area in the
last 15 years.
Percent of all households who are White in 2000 vs 2015:
The number of White households in the area has decreased over the last 15 years.
Estimated percent of all Black people who lived in poverty between 2000-2015:
There is not a substantial difference between the last 15 years. Perhaps if the time difference was larger there would
be a greater evidence of change.
Estimated per capita income between 2000-2015:
This was interesting to see the neighborhood has become more affluent over the last 15 years. Perhaps it is because
of the assets of the area increasing the interest of tourists and therefore bringing in more business. As a result, the
area is well funded and maintained by the government in order to attract more tourists.
Percent of all people who were African American in 2000-2015:
It seems as though the African American population either spread out, or decreased in some area and increased in
others over 15 years. The numbers are still in the low percentages on both maps (0.4 - 15%).
Estimated percent of all people who were White between 2000-2015:
The overall amount of White people in the Logan Square area decrease in the last 15 years by about 20%.

Occupational Status in 2016:

In the Russell Byers zip code 19103, it is 75.4% White Collar Occupational Status with 79,460 jobs.
Estimated percent of population with a Bachelors Degree in 2016:
In the Russell Byers zip code 19103, there was 36.6% of the population with a Bachelors Degree. This was a
surprising statistic since the Russell Byers area is affluent and it could be argued that affluence is correlated partly to
educational level (among other variables as well).

Percent on Non-English-Speaking Population in 2011-2015:

In the Russell Byers zip code 19103, there were 2.29% - 5.27% Non-English-Speaking Population in 2011-2015.
This was interesting since the museums in the area attract tourists and cater to their language options with different
sources of communication (ex: headsets with language guidance). However, because the non-speaking population
are just visiting, this could be why they do not affect the population data.
Crime Rates in 2016:
In the Russell Byers zip code 19103, the total crime risk is 210 crimes above the 100 average. In any city, the crime
rates seem to be higher from multiple variables. This could be why the Russell Byers neighborhood crime rates are
above average compared to the national level which includes many suburban schools with inherently lower crime
rates (a reference for this argument: https://www.brookings.edu/research/city-and-suburban-crime-trends-in-
metropolitan-america/).
Median Sales Price of Homes in 2017:
In the Russell Byers zip code 19103, the Median Sales price for a home is $454,500. For the lower income families
who attend Russell Byers, this price is too high for them to afford. Therefore, this is another reason why students
come from 43 different zip codes of Philadelphia than just the 19103-zip code for this charter school.
Estimated Median Household Income 2017:
In the Russell Byers zip code 19103, the Median Household Income was $51,581. It is clear the older generations
who live primarily in this area have the highest income. Therefore, younger families who can afford to live here still
have a larger source of income than other areas of Philadelphia. However, it is interesting that these families choose
to go to the other public school, Greenfield Albert M school. However, the charter aspect of Russell Byers is what
allows students from 43 zip codes to attend the school rather than Greenfield which is based on home-location.

Certified Teachers in 2015-2016:

In Russell Byers, 100% of 34 Teachers were Certified Teachers in 2015-2016. This is an impressive feat for an
urban public school in comparison to other Philadelphia schools.
Student Demographics:
In Russell Byers, there was 80% black students, 12% white students, and 8% other. 91.4% of students come from
low-income families. I can insinuate from my readings and the history of redlining, black families were segregated
by discriminatory practice refusing/limiting loans, mortgages, etc. within specific geographic areas (Massy Article,
School and Society Class). Not only was the black population segregated by housing, but they were also refused jobs
due to their race. Therefore, the black families economically struggled historically and were confined in ghettos
where other low-income families lived (who were primarily black). That is why 80% of the students are black, and
91% are from low income, taking into account other minorities as well who are from low income areas.

Student-Teacher Ratio in 2015-2016:

In Russell Byers, there were 485 students and 34 teachers. 17:1 student-teacher ratio. For a public school this is
very appealing for parents to send their children to a school with a lower student-teacher ratio.

2016-2017 School Mission Statements:

The Russell Byers Charter School provides students roots, a safe, stimulating environment with a rigorous
academic education grounded in Expeditionary Learning. Our students take responsibility for their learning to
become powerful communicators, creative problem solvers and compassionate, engaged citizens. Russell Byers
students develop wings to succeed in selective schools and embrace a love for learning.

Once a month there is a school meeting where the school gathers and sings this song, while holding each other. It
creates a community, caring, and adorable environment. This meeting embodies the mission of the school creating a
community among the students, teachers, and families.

Admission requirements:
Russell Byers: Public Lottery System (application not available)
If you already submitted an application for the 2017-18 school year, the lottery will be held on Thursday, March 16,
2017 at 12pm. If your child is accepted into Russell Byers Charter School through the lottery, an acceptance letter
will be sent out within a week, at which time your documentation will be required to be submitted for acceptance.
1,345 enrollment applications 2015-2016 school year with less than a 3% admission rate. This high demand supports
my claim that this school is a successfully urban educating school.

The student demographic does not represent the neighborhood demographic. This is due to the fact that the
school is a Magnet Charter school, and as a result the student population comes from 43 different zip codes. The data
I used relays the demographics of the Rittenhouse/Logan Square area because that is where the school is located. The
neighborhood demographic is contrasting to the Russell Byers student body, where 91% of the students are from
low-income families. What I did find beneficial for the schools location is that it is surrounded by many physical
assets. The Russell Byers school is within walking distance from six museums that all are applicable to the
curriculum content. In Russell Byers, 100% of 34 Teachers were Certified Teachers in 2015-2016. This is an
impressive feat for an urban public school in comparison to other Philadelphia schools. In Russell Byers, there were
485 students and 34 teachers. 17:1 student-teacher ratio. For parents this is very appealing to send their children to a
school with a lower student-teacher ratio. Although the demographic outside of Russell Byers is almost the opposite
of the students, the school utilizes its position to best serve its students.
In the Russell Byers neighborhood, there was a total population of 21,501 people in 2016. The median age of
this population is 33 years old. Also, in the neighborhood it is 75.4% White Collar Occupational Status with 79,460
jobs. This implies there is a large of a young, working professionals surrounding the school. With the successful
schools and close-proximity-to-work benefits, the Median Sales price for a home is a high $454,500. For the lower
income families who attend Russell Byers, this price is too high for them to afford to live in close proximity to the
school. Therefore, this is another reason why students come from 43 different zip codes of Philadelphia.
The Russell Byers neighborhood has become more affluent over the last 15 years. Perhaps it is because of
the assets of the area increasing the interest of tourists and therefore bringing in more business. As a result, the area
is well funded and maintained by the government in order to attract more tourists. In relation to the affluence, a
surprising statistic was that there was only 36.6% of the population with a Bachelors Degree. This was a surprising
because it could be argued that affluence is correlated to educational level (among other variables as well). Affluence
is evident in the Median Household income because it was $51,581 in 2016. It is clear the older generations who live
primarily in this area have the highest income. However, the younger families who can afford to live here still have a
larger source of income than other areas of Philadelphia. Through my discussion with parents visiting the Free
Library, it is interesting that these families chose to go to the other public school, Greenfield Albert M school, rather
than Russell Byers. I believe this has to do with the view that the white upper class improve schools with
donations of time, money, and other resources, but see the poor Black Americans (who primarily makeup the
Russell Byerss student body) are lesser and the problem for the school (I want the White People, Cucchicara).
Another clear contrast between inside the school walls and its outside community is the racial demographic.
The Russell Byers neighborhood is primarily White while the school has 80% Black students. I can insinuate from
readings and the history of redlining, black families were segregated by discriminatory practice refusing/limiting
loans, mortgages, etc. within specific geographic areas (Massy Article, School and Society Class). Not only was the
Black population segregated by housing, historically they were also refused jobs due to their race. Therefore, the
Black families economically struggled historically and were confined in ghettos of Philadelphia with other low-
income families lived. That is why the 91% of the Black students are from low-income homes and travel from other
districts with lower quality public schools.
Another data analysis I made that has to do with a busy, humming area of Philly is the fact that the total
crime risk is 210 crimes above the 100 average. In any city, the crime rates seem to be higher from multiple
variables. If I had to speculate, the city-location aspect would be why the Russell Byers neighborhood crime rates are
above average compared to the national level. In contrast, if you ask a majority of people walking around the
neighborhood, they would tell you it feels safe. An impressive number was the 1,345 enrollment applications that
were counted for the 2015-2016 school year with less than a 3% admission rate. This high demand supports a claim
that this school has acted as a successful urban school.
