Once a month there is a school meeting where the school gathers and sings this song, while holding each other. It
creates a community, caring, and adorable environment. This meeting embodies the mission of the school creating a
community among the students, teachers, and families.
Admission requirements:
Russell Byers: Public Lottery System (application not available)
If you already submitted an application for the 2017-18 school year, the lottery will be held on Thursday, March 16,
2017 at 12pm. If your child is accepted into Russell Byers Charter School through the lottery, an acceptance letter
will be sent out within a week, at which time your documentation will be required to be submitted for acceptance.
1,345 enrollment applications 2015-2016 school year with less than a 3% admission rate. This high demand supports
my claim that this school is a successfully urban educating school.

The student demographic does not represent the neighborhood demographic. This is due to the fact that the
school is a Magnet Charter school, and as a result the student population comes from 43 different zip codes. The data
I used relays the demographics of the Rittenhouse/Logan Square area because that is where the school is located. The
neighborhood demographic is contrasting to the Russell Byers student body, where 91% of the students are from
low-income families. What I did find beneficial for the schools location is that it is surrounded by many physical
assets. The Russell Byers school is within walking distance from six museums that all are applicable to the
curriculum content. In Russell Byers, 100% of 34 Teachers were Certified Teachers in 2015-2016. This is an
impressive feat for an urban public school in comparison to other Philadelphia schools. In Russell Byers, there were
485 students and 34 teachers. 17:1 student-teacher ratio. For parents this is very appealing to send their children to a
school with a lower student-teacher ratio. Although the demographic outside of Russell Byers is almost the opposite
of the students, the school utilizes its position to best serve its students.
In the Russell Byers neighborhood, there was a total population of 21,501 people in 2016. The median age of
this population is 33 years old. Also, in the neighborhood it is 75.4% White Collar Occupational Status with 79,460
jobs. This implies there is a large of a young, working professionals surrounding the school. With the successful
schools and close-proximity-to-work benefits, the Median Sales price for a home is a high $454,500. For the lower
income families who attend Russell Byers, this price is too high for them to afford to live in close proximity to the
school. Therefore, this is another reason why students come from 43 different zip codes of Philadelphia.
The Russell Byers neighborhood has become more affluent over the last 15 years. Perhaps it is because of
the assets of the area increasing the interest of tourists and therefore bringing in more business. As a result, the area
is well funded and maintained by the government in order to attract more tourists. In relation to the affluence, a
surprising statistic was that there was only 36.6% of the population with a Bachelors Degree. This was a surprising
because it could be argued that affluence is correlated to educational level (among other variables as well). Affluence
is evident in the Median Household income because it was $51,581 in 2016. It is clear the older generations who live
primarily in this area have the highest income. However, the younger families who can afford to live here still have a
larger source of income than other areas of Philadelphia. Through my discussion with parents visiting the Free
Library, it is interesting that these families chose to go to the other public school, Greenfield Albert M school, rather
than Russell Byers. I believe this has to do with the view that the white upper class improve schools with
donations of time, money, and other resources, but see the poor Black Americans (who primarily makeup the
Russell Byerss student body) are lesser and the problem for the school (I want the White People, Cucchicara).
Another clear contrast between inside the school walls and its outside community is the racial demographic.
The Russell Byers neighborhood is primarily White while the school has 80% Black students. I can insinuate from
readings and the history of redlining, black families were segregated by discriminatory practice refusing/limiting
loans, mortgages, etc. within specific geographic areas (Massy Article, School and Society Class). Not only was the
Black population segregated by housing, historically they were also refused jobs due to their race. Therefore, the
Black families economically struggled historically and were confined in ghettos of Philadelphia with other low-
income families lived. That is why the 91% of the Black students are from low-income homes and travel from other
districts with lower quality public schools.
Another data analysis I made that has to do with a busy, humming area of Philly is the fact that the total
crime risk is 210 crimes above the 100 average. In any city, the crime rates seem to be higher from multiple
variables. If I had to speculate, the city-location aspect would be why the Russell Byers neighborhood crime rates are
above average compared to the national level. In contrast, if you ask a majority of people walking around the
neighborhood, they would tell you it feels safe. An impressive number was the 1,345 enrollment applications that
were counted for the 2015-2016 school year with less than a 3% admission rate. This high demand supports a claim
that this school has acted as a successful urban school.
