NO

9. Objectives of the project highlighting its importance:

OBJECTIVES:

1) The purpose of this project is to generate electricity by utilizing bio gas that is produced by
waste of campus kitchen.
2) The use of Bio gas using kitchen waste as feed stock ,which can help to solve the problem of
energy deficit and at the same time allow the safe disposal of kitchen waste which is often
unscientifically dumped or discarded.
3) Large number of Jobs: Either way, work opportunities are created for thousands of people in these
plants. These jobs are a blessing in rural areas, which are the targeted grounds for the use of
biogas. In fact, biogas can easily be decentralized, making it easier to access by those living in
remote areas or facing frequent power outages.
4) Little Capital Investment: Biogas are easy to set up and require little capital investment on a small
scale basis. In fact, many farms can become self sufficient by utilizing biogas plants and the waste
material produced by their livestock each day. A single cow can provide enough waste material
within a day to power a light bulb the entire day.

10. METHODOLOGY:-
First we have planned to develop a new plant for power generation in most effective way, by eliminating all
the disadvantages of the conventional biogas power plant and that of the biogas power plant using the co-generator.
Following that we have conducted a literature survey in order to study the existing method of power generation from
biogas. By analyzing the power plant details those we have found in the survey, we have realized that there is a great
scope to do this topic as our project.

Then we have gather many information about biogas content and different method to purify the unwanted gas
from the biogas and we came to known about different methods for purifying the biogas. Then we have selected the
appropriate method by considering several factors like cost factor, availability. And tried to connect all the
components together. The next problem was the modification of the Internal Combustion engine. All the internal
combustion engines are mainly cooled with aid of wind speed. Since in our project the engine is stationary and thus a
little consideration has to be given in cooling engine . Then we have decided to provide a liquid cooling to the engine
for better heat removal from the engine .

While going through the literature survey it found that the calorific value of the biogas is less than that of the
gasoline . Since the biogas is purified the value does not differ much. The compression ratio can be changed from 12:1
in common engine to17:1 in the modified engine, the biogas does not self ignite so the change in the compression ratio
does not affect the working of the engine adversely but it helps to increase the thermal efficiency of the engine.

Thus we have a proper design regarding our project and based on which we are going to fabricate to the power
plant. We can add more features to our project in order to make it perfect and work efficiently. We hope the
fabrication will be completed in the next phase of the project.

BLOCK DIAGRAM:

Fig: Conventional Biogas Power Plant

In conventional biogas power plant the feed is given to the digester and is digested an aerobically into several
components like methane, carbon dioxide and the proteins are converted into hydrogen sulphide , it also produces
water vapours . The products from the biogas plant is directly given to the engine which runs on the biogas as fuel.

Limitations:

The gas produced from the biogas plant is fed directly into the Internal Combustion as fuel. Since the
product gas contain several other gases like carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, and also water vapour other than the
useful methane. These unwanted gases will reduce the efficiency of the engine and the presence of corrosive gasses
like hydrogen sulphide will corrode the carry pipe and also the engine components.

SOLUTION

While solving the above mentioned problems, we have planned to develop a new design which could
overcome them. Our design consist of:

1) Biogas plant design

2) Purification system
a) Hydrogen sulphide removal
b) Carbon dioxide removal
c) Water vapour removal

3) Modified Internal Combustion engine coupled to a generator

11. Expected out come of the project:

1) Indias energy problems have made the need to turn towards waste-to-energy technologies
extremely important, especially because landfills in Indias urban centers are fast nearing the
limits of their capacity
2) From the analysis of existing methods and plants used for power generation, we understood
that there is a great scope for new plant with improved methods and efficiency to minimize the
energy crisis we phasing in college canteen.
3) High moisture content makes thermal recovery from solid waste uneconomical as considerable
fuel is used up by the latent moisture in the solid waste.
4) Anaerobic digestion, which requires high moisture content for the sustenance of the methane
bacteria, was the preferred alternative for energy recovery from organic waste
5) A higher volatile matter content leads to a better biogas yield.
12. Application of the project:
a) Biogas used as a fuel:
As we know that air contains 21 % oxygen which means the energy that is released consents
biogas to be used as a fuel. Generally, biogas is a renewable fuel. In any country, for cooking or
heating purposes biogas can be used as a low-cost fuel.
b) Biogas used as a heat engine:
In modern waste management amenities, biogas can be used to run any type of heat engine in order
to generate electrical or mechanical power. It can be compressed, like a natural gas, to control
motor vehicles
c) Use in the mobility sector:
The decoupling of production and utilisation also makes it possible to use biogas as fuel for
natural gas vehicles. Biogas processed into bio methane and used as fuel can make an important
contribution to climate protection, enhance supply security and reduce noise emissions.
d) Reduces Greenhouse Effect:
It also reduces the greenhouse effect by utilizing the gases being produced in landfills as forms of
energy. This is a major reason why the use of biogas has started catching on. It recycles most forms
of biodegradable waste and works on simple forms of technology.
