1.1. Brief history

The foundation of Nice bottled Water Company goesback to 2000E.C. The main reason behind
the selection of the place by the companysupervisor was not only because of its beautiful
climate but also due to the presence of the spring water. These springs are located on the cross
roads of an ancient church ofSaintJohn.

In a rare natural gift the mineral water flowed directly from the source to the plant. Nice bottled
Water Company is one of the newest factories with its soft andnonalcoholic beverage factories in
Tigray. It is located in Tigray region in central zone, specific place in Agbe. 912 km away from
AddisAbaba and110km from Mekelletown, and was completed at the end of 2001E/C as private

For the company to be competitive it depends greatly on quality of products which starts from
the purification of the water, this is made pass through number of filters. But to purify the water
all in all the company uses OZON which is produced within the company. Ozone is an unstable,
colorless gas, a powerful oxidizer and a potent germicide. It has a much higher disinfection
potential than other disinfectants such as chlorine. Ozone is used in the bottled water industry
because it controls the growth of bacteria in water. It is desirable because it can do this without
leaving a residual taste, such as you would find with chlorine. The lower the total dissolved
solids level, the higher the solubility of the ozone.

The system is designed to provide effective mixing and "Mass Transfer" of the ozone and
product water prior to entering the filler. The stainless steel contact tank further increases the
level of ozone in the product water by blending together, under pressure, the molecules of ozone
to the molecules of water.

Methods of Ozone production

As commercially demanded treatment, there have been years of research and development put in
method of ozone production. Today there are four methods:
Electrolysis
Radiochemical
Corona discharge
Ultra violate radiation
From those methodsMayayni follows the electrolysis method of ozone production.

Electrolysis
Electrolysis is the process in which current is passed through a liquid, causing chemical reaction
resulting in evolution of gas. In related to ozone production water can be used as electrolyte
leading to direct diffusion or special electrolytes such as sulfuric acid can be used and ozone gas
drawn off and defused and contacted to the usual method.
Work has been done with different electrolyte and anode materials to improve efficiency of
production and minimize the corrosive reaction on the anode surface. The concentration of ozone
produced is determined by the current density acting on the cell.

Figure 2: electrolytic ozone generator cell design

With the use of ozone gas involving cell as depicted in this diagram, high concentration of
ozone. The use of electrolysis for ozone production is presently limited to small unit used for
application that require high concentration of ozone and diffusion of ozone into ultra purewater.

Currently, while their capital cost is favorable compared to corona discharge unit, the operating
cost are significantly high.

1.5. Objectives of the attachment

1.5.1. General objectives:
In the curriculum structure engineering students must successfully complete one of that
attachment programmers before their graduation. The attachment programme is graded and
considered as partial fulfillment for the Bachelor of Engineering degree courses. The purposes of
attachment are to supplement in-house practical professional training and to instill in the students
the right work attitudes and professionalism so that they could become effective and productive
to the irrespective organizations much sooner than is usual for fresh graduates.
Attachment is a learning process which by exposing the students in real life workingenvironment
as part of an academic curriculum helps the students to develop and enhance academic, personal
and professional competencies. Due to the diversity of the training environments and
backgrounds of organization supervisors, a significant part of the attachment programme is based
on a self-directed learning approach by the students.

1.5.2. Specific Objectives

To scale up the theoretical knowledge with relate to the industrial linkage and work.
To help students as they develop the habit of leadership that makes them to lead

CHAPTER TWO
OVERALL INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

2.1. Introduction

I began the process of internship program arranged by our university in 2009 when I was fourth
year at the second semester. First I give letter provided from the university to the company then
in 2009 after completion of the final semester, I allowed to go to the company as per the
rule of our university by the electrical department head. As I have arrived to the company,
first I have introduced myself to the general of the company once again to the electrical
technical director. At the first day of the start of my original work, I have visited the company
as a hole.

By communicating with my advisor from the company, I started to work in electrical department
of technical manager, which is locatsearchesed at Gola .Besides working what upon order from
my company advisor, I started search what were the main problems of the company that related
to my professional.

In the company under technical manager in electrical department, I have generally seen how we
control the product; maintain instrument, and installing certain machine and services.

Generally, I have gotten so many experiences like practical scale up, up grading theoretical
skills, develop the habit of the communicating, and adjust myself with industrial atmosphere and
leadership ability from the internship program.

2.2. How I get into the Company

Obviously, internship is a method of new reform study to develop well competent and practically
efficient engineers. Consequently, the university-industry linkage coordinator has given me a
chance for asking a company and organization according to my interest seven months ago.
Depending on my interest and response from the related companies, the university has assigned

7|Page

the students to the related companies. Iamamong those students who get place of the internship
program.

2.3. Section I have been working in the company

In my stay in the company, I have been working in the technical and product section spatially in
the electrical department. This section has many elements like in Chemical, mechanical,
electrical, chemists, biologists and many machine operators and daily workers.

In the department, there are many electrical and electronic equipments that I have been taught
theoretically and what I have not seen before. Some of the equipmentsare: Generators,
Transformers, motors, transistors, diodes, capacitors, inductors, backers, fuses, different types of
cables, bus coupler, extreme number of sensors and additionally, different lumps, the PLC (
programmable logic control) ,the brain of the campany, and soft starters.

To verify some of them where and when they are available:

The control cabinet: are touch screen to control machines provided for each machines
control panel; a panel with electrical elements like circuit board, switch, contactors,
relays, circuit breakers, soft starters, PLC, different BUS used to The control and
install the overall operation of the machineries.
The generator: Used at the time there exists problem with EEPCO, to generate
Motor:An electric motor is an electrical machine that converts electrical energy into
mechanical energyand pressure related tasks in the production process.
Soft starters: electrical equipment that controls the starting speed of any running
machineries of the company, allow machineries to start at very low speed.
PLC: an electrical material used to manage the overall machineries within the company
Conveyor: this machine has only one conveyer which is used to move plastic filled by
product and long about 50 meters.
Transformers: an electrical material used to transform the power coming from EEPCO
as well as from the generators as per requirement. Two transformers exist within the
company.

8|Page
Undergraduate Internship Report 2017
Control transformers: this control transformer is used for adjusting the amount of
voltage and the phase. As an example we can mention phase shifter transformer. This
component shifts the three phase voltage supplied to the machine in to two phases.
Indicator lamp: This tells the operator when the power is applied and indicates the status
of operation of the machine.
Relay: an electromagnetic device composed frame or core with an electromagnetic coil
and contacts.
Heater/Boiler: used for drying of water droplets on the packed water and also for
melting a plastics.

2.4. Work Flow in the Section

As I have tried to mention, Nice bottled Water Company is one of the most effective company all
over the country that aimed at producing non-alcoholic drinks. I have been assigned to work in
the water treatment and production section. Through its work the general flow of work to follow
is as follows;

The water from the underground is take from source at 100m is pumped and taken directly to
container room, the change from concentration to dilute or visa verse, then it will be allowed to
be passed through some filters to be purified from iron, sand, soil and other related impurities.
then the vacuumed water is passed to the mixing and filling room to be mixed with syrup and
carbon dioxide .The containers to be filled are prepared as per their requirement, for the mineral
water; the bottles are washed through the washing machine and then within the conveyor taken
to the filer machine then to the closer, labeler, printer then the end product is provided.. This line
of production is generally known as process line of production.

For the pure drink, the preforms are molded by the molding machine and taken to the filer and
closer machine, then to the labeler, printer and finally to the shearing machine and the end
product is taken.

Each and every movement of the containers is within the conveyor, there by the sensors are
adjust to check any problem within the containers and the bottles as well. On the conveyor
photocell sense the position and condition of crate, if the crates are overloaded, the program
forces the flow of the crate to stop.

2.4.1. Production of PET-bottles

PET is the abbreviation for polyethylene terephthalate. It is a polyester (chain of individual

ester) which is formed by poly-condensation of two types of monomers called ethylene glycol
and purified terephthalic acid. PET is produced from either crude oil or natural gas.

10 | P a g e
Undergraduate Internship Report 2017

The manufacturing of bottles from PET primary granules is done by injection molding of
preforms using standard types of injection molding machines. Injection molding is perhaps the
most common and important of all plastic processing processes. The process is extremely
versatile, and can produce very complex shaped parts, with the use of multi-sided molds. Even
parts with metal inserts can be produced. While injection molding dies are expensive to produce,
each die can be used to make tens of thousands of components at very rapid rate, so that per-part
cost is very low. Its work flow be:

Preforms are loaded into the hopper, which holds up to 3000 preforms at a time.
An elevator moves preforms up to a gravity-based sorter, which aligns preforms on a
conveyor.
Preforms are then aligned and loaded onto a chute, where they are gravity-fed into the
preform holders. Four preforms simultaneously move through two parallel heat tunnels,
each with eight heat zones and two quartz heating elements.
The preforms move through the heat tunnels, where they are heated to the optimal blowing
temperature prior to entering the molds. A sensor at the end of the tunnels monitors the
preform temperature. If temperature has not reached the minimum preset temperature of
approximately 194 F (90 C), the preforms move through the molds and are not blown.
From the heaters, preforms are loaded into the custom-designed molds where four bottles
are blown at a time. A pressurized liquid chiller keeps the mold temperature in a
controlled range to ensure that consistently high quality bottles are blown.
The simplest form of injection molding is shown in the schematic below.

2.4.3. General PET bottled water production

Pet Bottle Rinsing, Filling & Capping Machine is based on automatic process that takes care of
processes involving Pet Bottle Rinsing, Filling, and Capping. Coming with label shrink tunnels,
these are suitable for bottles like liquids in flim packages and has features:
Fully automatic Monoblock operation for 500ml - 2000ml bottles.
Can run PET bottles with air conveyor.
Maximum production speed 60bottles/min.
Machine can be made cold fill carbonated drinks.
UV sterilization for caps before capping operation.
Fitted with PLC control.

In filling process compressor air is used for lifting cylinder. Next to filling labeling is done. This
is the work to attach the paper on the bottle the slog of Mayayni bottled water company. Now at
the one more step left the decoding machine is near the labeling machine which is used to write
expire date on the product water. This machine has its own program and color to print on the
bottle what the programmer adjust on memory of the machine. Packing the final step that means
putting bottles in one crate automatically by packer machine, then the conveyor take out the
bottle filled pure product water to end where the fork lift take to the lorry which transports the
final product to the market. On the conveyor photocell senses the position and condition of crate,
if the crates are over load the program forced to stop the flow of the crate as guided by the PLC
through some signal flow.

2.5. Difficulties with the company

In my stay in the company, I have been facing some problems in the section I have been working
and in the company as a whole. Some of those problems are as follows;
Even though most sensors (such as temperature sensor, pressure sensor, photo sensor
and object sensor) are placed at the appropriate place, there are cases when some
sensors failed to sense correctly. For example, the object sensors will allow the unfilled
container to pass even though it is empty.
Whenever there is any fault with the power coming from the EEPCO, the production
will stop for some time. This is because the generator used in the company is not
automatic.

15 | P a g e
Undergraduate Internship Report 2017
When any problem with the power coming from the EEPCO occurs within the
company, only the EEPCO technician can correct it. The companys technicians are not
authorized. This causes production interruption.
Most of the electrical equipments are inductive types. This results in low power factor
(approximately 0.79).
The largest problem inMayayni bottled water Company is when a failure occurs in any
of the large machineries, the companytechnicians are not able to correct them. The
machineries can only be seen and corrected by those technicians in China and some
living in Addis Ababa. This is very costly.

2.6. Measures I have taken

I recommend electrical department of the company to replace the control of the generator
by the automatic one.
After we clean the sensorsfrom dusts, we have come to knowthat the sensors were
working correctly.
Most of the electrical materials are of inductive type. This is one of the problems that
reduce the product of the company. This is as a result of low power factor, since they do
not have power factor corrector. I gave brief highlights about disadvantages of low power
factor to the electricians there and showed them how power factor correction calculation
is made.
When the need arises to correct for poor power factor in an AC power system, they
probably wont have the luxury of knowing the loads exact inductance in henrys to use
for their calculations. they may be fortunate enough to have an instrument called
a power factor meter to tell them what the power factor is (a number between 0 and 1),
and the apparent power (which can be figured by taking a voltmeter reading in volts and
multiplying by an ammeter reading in amps). In less favorable circumstances they may
have to use an oscilloscope to compare voltage and current waveforms, measuring phase
shift in degrees and calculating power factor by the cosine of that phase.

OVERALL BENEFIT OF INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The overall benefits I got from the internship program include;

16 | P a g e
Undergraduate Internship Report 2017
Helps me improve my practical skills.
Helps me upgrade my theoretical knowledge.
Helps me improve my interpersonal communicational skills.
Helps me developteam-playing skills.
Helps me developcostume of leadership skills.
Helps me understand work ethics related issues.
Helps me developentrepreneurship skills.

In terms of improving my practical skill, in the company, each and every activity is performed
practically which allowed me to understand and change what I know theoretically in to practical.
Obviously theoretical knowledge is easy to forget but when accompaniedwith practical it can ban
be remembered and even developed additionally.

In terms of upgrading my theoretical knowledge, whenever theoretical knowledges are realized

practically it can be developed and bounded further. I therefore realize and upgrade my
theoretical knowledknowledo

s communicating with all the workers within the company and some outside the company when
necessary through some questions. This skill up punctuality which means being a place work on
time.

Responsibility, accountability, confidentiality and non-addiction are common ethics for any
profession to do professionally related activities.

Entrepreneurship a good habit because creating work and organizing ideas for meeting a goal is
necessary in today world. In our work we generally develop the costume of organizing,
communicating, improving practical skill, upgrading theoretical skills and the ability of solving
problems in our stay.

In order to upgrade and strengthen the theoretical knowledges, industrial attachment program is
the most affecting method especially for professionals where the university fails to show the real
world of industry and atmosphere of the work. Consequently, as professionals I have obtained
number of engineering concepts as:
How to change the fuel gas into electrical energy using generators to use at the
time there is any fault with the main source.

17 | P a g e
Undergraduate Internship Report 2017
How to test failure of the underground cables and how to install them at the time
of fault and at the normal condition also.
How to install the house installations practically.
What equipment are required for special activity like compressing the air within
the room to allow the containers move along the overhead conveyors , molding
the pre reforms to have the size required, counting to know the amount of
products with no man power and sensing through some signal flow etc.
How to clean the room from different insects simply by signal flow from the
ultra-violate board, without spraying any chemical spray manually or by any
means.
Controlling all steps by any means whether electrical, mechanical and others.
Controlling all steps by any means whether electrical, mechanical and others.
How to supply the power from transmutation line and how to use efficiently the
consumed power.
Identifying problems, as well as searching solution for the problems.
Observing different electronics physically and application wise meaning.
How to control the process of the product in electrical profession.

4.1. Recommendation

The internship program must participate all parties to meet the goal of this program and the
interconnection among university, government and companies should be strong. The program is
the best one, but needs very much attention specially the participant, company and also much
support from the universities.

4.1.1. Recommendation to university

Internship is a great chance, choice and method of creating true, efficient, competitive, skilled
person and means of identifying and solving different problems. However, in my stay in the
company for the internship program, the implementation was very poor because of the
interconnection of the university and the company. Therefore, the university should have strong
interconnection with the company to allow the students to attach the program with no
difficulties.

4.1.2. Recommendation to the company

It is not choice for any company to host student and facilitate the police of government to
the goal of internship. Therefore, the company itself shall give projects and should give
responsibility to the students and follow the works and the steps the students, as well as
force them to identify and solve the problems.
After hosting the student the company shall facilitate in terms of advising, preparing
workshops, references, library and Internet access. In my stay, I have identified many
problems. However,I could not solve all the problems because of the lack of facility.
From the company somebody needsfull information about the company with softcopy or
hard copy. After I left the University for Internship, I was unable to start my work on
time due to limited references and unavailability of internet access.
The company must to improve the overall power factor of the system by installing a
capacitor bank. It should not pay extra money for the power, which is not actually
consumed by the company.
The company should give skill gap training to the operators.
