Intro: For this project, the students will be using garage band and an audio recording app found

on their
iPads. The students will record sounds found in the classroom and in nature through the use of their
audio recording app. The students will then organize these sounds into rhythmic patterns using garage
band. Students will master the following concepts in garage band; importing audio, splice audio, play
back, add multiple tracks, import a backing track, align several tracks to match tempo and down beats,
fade in/out, volume control. Through the use of music technology incorporation into the classroom
students who may not enjoy general music class or their traditional ensemble can find joy in creating
their own music and achieve mastery of musical concepts they may not have understood previously.
Music technology in the classroom allows students to step away from the technical aspect of playing an
instrument or singing and focus solely on the music they are creating.

Standards: MU:Cr2.1.T.IIIa Select, develop, and organize multiple melodic, rhythmic and harmonic ideas
to develop into a larger work that exhibits unity, variety, complexity, and coherence using digital and
analog tools, resources, and systems.

Objective: Students will record and rhythmically organize everyday sounds into Garage Band and
incorporate a backing track to create a unified sound.

Process:

DAY ONE
-Play students example of the finished product
-Q&A guided questions
What did you hear? Did any sounds stand out to you? What did they remind you of? What did
you think they were? Were these sounds sporadic or organized?
-Tell students what sounds were recorded
-Explain project to students write goals, instructions, and what they should include in this project on the
board
-Tell students to get out a piece of paper and pencil, give them ten minutes to walk around the outside
of the school and write down all the sounds they hear.
-Come back inside to discuss sounds found in small groups for two minutes
-Full class discussion for five minutes about what sounds they heard and wrote down
-Give students demonstration on how to use the iPads to record audio
-Class practice, have students get with partners and try to record an audio sound
-Give students ten minutes to record the sounds they heard outside

DAY TWO
-Begin class by putting students in small groups and allow them to play their recorded sounds for each
other
-Allow a few students to play their sounds for the whole class
-Teacher demonstration on garage band
-Open up garage band and show students how to create a track that allows for outside audio
-Show students how to import audio into garage band
-Show students how to split audio into different regions and drag it around
-Demonstrate how to fade audio in and out, change dynamic levels and play their work from the
beginning
- Demonstrate how to add another track that allows to import audio already in the program and import
a backing track
- After demonstration go over instructions and expectations once again
-Allow students to import their audio into garage band

DAY THREE
Work day
Assessment:
I will utilize a checklist of instructions shared with my students to guide my assessment of their work. If
the student has included all of these things I will know they clearly understood how to import audio,
how to mix audio sounds, utilize dynamic contrast in the program, and create new tracks.
This checklist will include:
Five different audio recordings
All five sounds are heard clearly in the recording
Dynamic contrast is heard
Sounds are organized in a rhythmic pattern the student can explain
One or two paragraphs written by the student accompanying the project that explains their project and
why they made the decisions they did
Backing track
A finished product on garage band (does not have to be exported to an mp3/wave/mp4 format)

Reflection: Creating this unit was fairly straightforward for developing the process of learning. I think it
was fun to create this unit as well because students can utilize their creativity and interact with the
sounds around them. I hope this unit not only teaches students mastery of certain concepts in garage
band, but also helps them develop an awareness of their surroundings.
