Iowa Teaching Standard 1

Standard 1:
Demonstrates ability to enhance academic performance and
support for implementation of the school districts student achievement
goals.

Criteria e. Creates an environment of mutual respect, rapport, and fairness.

Mock Oral Debate Rubric: Below I have assembled how a rubric for a
verbal debate may appear in a future classroom I may teach. Debates
always have the danger of escalating beyond a structured debate and
instead becomes emotional and inflammatory. This creates an
environment that is toxic to the students and the teaching staff. A way to
combat this is to make respect for the other students part of the grading
system. Along with the academic gains that can be achieved by a student
during this project, this also prepares them for a life outside of academia
where mutual respect is required to function adequately within society.

Oral Debate Rubric

Students will be assigned a random topic which has been covered in class and will be
given a pre-existing side to argue. Then students will be paired with another student who has the
same issue, but a different stance. Students will have three days of in-class time to formulate and
plan their side of the debate including notes, speech outline, and rebuttals. On debate day
students will give a prepared opening speech, an impromptu rebuttal, and a conclusion, going
back and forth between debaters. Along with preparedness and content, respect and a tolerance
of other students will also play into a factor with grading.
