TOPIC DETAILS CK
Date/Duration 45 minutes
Standard: CC.1.2.4.F Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in
grade-level text, including figurative language
I will ask the students to look outside and tell me what they see. What is the weather
like today? (answers will vary depending on the day) How did you know what to wear
to school today? (parents, or news) Do you know what the person is called who talks
about the weather on the news? (they may say weather man/woman; meteorologist) If
they dont know the name for a weather person, then I will tell them and spell it out on
the board so they have a visual. Then I will ask if anyone knows how weather is
measured? (they may answer thermometer, but they may not know any.) If they dont
know any I will tell them that thats okay because we are going to learn about them.
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
Weather can be observed using tools that allow us to analyze their patterns and collect
data.
What tools are used to measure weather? What types of weather can be observed?
What does data collected from weather tell us about their patterns?
The 4th grade students will be able to identify each of the weather instruments and the
type of weather they measure by completing a worksheet with 80% accuracy.
Vocabulary
Transition
I will make sure I have their attention by saying Scooby Dooby Doo and they will
respond with Where are you? I will then tell them what we are going to do.
I will have the students get their I-pads and go to nearpod.com. They will put in the
code and their full name. I will start the nearpod. The nearpod will cover all the
vocabulary in in-depth terms and provide pictures. At the beginning of the nearpod
there will be two questions; 1. Who do you think predicts the weather? 2. How do you
think meteorologists predict the weather? This is my pre-assessment of the students.
Each question is open-ended and each student must submit an answer. After each
question slide is a slide that provides the correct answer with some detail.
Modeling of the Concept
While I go over the slides, the students will be filling out a fill in the blank and matching
worksheet. The information on the slides will be on the worksheets. One paper will
have a matching section, on one side will be the names of the weather instruments and
the other side is what they measure. They will have to match the instrument and what
they measure by placing the corresponding letter to the instrument. Underneath the
matching are pictures of each of the instruments and the students will write what each
instrument is using the word bank. The fill in the blank will also have a word bank.
They will have to fill in the blank as I go through the nearpod. After I hand out these
worksheets before I start the nearpod, I will tell the students NOT to do the last 3
problems on the fill in the blank worksheet. Those will be done after the nearpod.
At the end of the nearpod there are a few review slides. There are open-ended
questions, fill in the blanks, and draw it questions and every student must submit an
answer. I will give the students about 3 minutes on each question, or until everyone has
submitted an answer. Once everyone has answered the question, we will go over the
question as a class.
Once we have gone over each question, I will exit out of the nearpod. I will tell the
students to work on the last three problems on the fill in the blank worksheet. Once
they have completed those 3 questions, they will bring the paper up to me and I will
check it. If they have any questions wrong I will mark them and hand them back to
them to fix. Once the period is up I will collect all the worksheets they completed during
the nearpod and after. We will go over the answers the following day.
Transition
I will have the students stand up from their seats and we will do a Go Noodle dance
from gonoodle.com. I will allow the students to vote on which dance we do.
Informal Evaluation
This will be the questions in the nearpod presentation that they have to answer
afterwards. I will measure this with the nearpod system. I will be able to see who
answered and what their answer was.
CLOSURE Summary and Review of the Learning
I will review what we learned briefly before we dance. I will have each student tell me
something interesting they learned during the lesson.
Homework/Assignments
Their homework will be starting their weather journal. The students will have to get
online and look at the forecast for the current day and the next or watch the news to
find out. They will write the date and time they found the data. They will circle what the
condition was for the day (sunny, partly cloudy, cloudy, raining, snowing, or storming),
the current temperature, the wind speed and direction, the amount of precipitation,
and humidity percentage. Next to this box they will write what the expected forecast is
for the next day. The temperature high and low, precipitation chance, conditions, and
whether they agree or disagree and why. This will be a daily homework assignment for
a week.
