General Information:
This manual was prepared to assist in the installation, operation, and
maintenance of ACMV Separator systems. For immediate response to
questions not covered in this manual please contact your ACMV Filter
representative or call the factory.

Description:
The ACMV Separator has no moving parts, requires no spare parts inventory,
and contains no filter media to clean or change. The flow-through design allows
for continuous operation while process liquid is pumped through the Separator
separation chamber. The ACMV Separator is ideal for separating solids from
cooling tower water, process water, and other applications requiring separation
of liquids from solids.

Principle of Operation:
Liquid enters the Separator cylindrical separation chamber at the inlet nozzle
near the top of Separator. The cylindrical chamber is significantly larger than
the system pipework or nozzles of the separator. The large separator chamber
serves to reduce the velocity of particles that enter the Separator Chamber.
Particles heavier than liquid come in contact with Separator tube that further
reduce its velocity and separate it from the liquid. The low velocity particulates
settle to the bottom of the separator and accumulate in the lower collection
chamber until it is purged from the Separator.

The purge can be a manual operation or automatic purge operation. Manual

purge only has a manual isolating valve that requires an operator to regularly
open the purge valve. Automatic Purge comes with an electric motorized valve
that opens to purge the separator taking its command from the Separator
control panel or a BAS or water treatment command signal.

The Separator use as a Side Stream Filtration Unit come together with a skid
mount pump (optional: supplied by customer) with pre-strainer, control panel
and optional bag filter. The Separator pump draws water into the Separator and
returns water back to the source.

Separator System applied in side stream filtration unit for cooling tower can be
provided with optional Clean Jets that are installed at the basin of the cooling
tower to prevent suspended particle from settling to the base of the cooling
tower.

ACMV Hi E Separator is a straight inlet and straight outlet nozzle connection

instead of top outlet nozzle connection. This creates a lower profile separator
that allows the installer to placed it in a location that does not have high head
room.

Installation:
The following items not provide in the Separator skid are required for
installation of the Separator system:

Inlet/outlet valves
Pipework Separator Supply and Return Pipeline, Separator Drain line
for purging.
Electrical Cables/Conduit/Trucking to provide power supply
Electrical Isolator located adjacent to the Separator System Skid
Concrete Plinth
Neoprene Pads at the base of the skid
Optional Flow Switch located on the external pipeline

In cooling tower application, the Separator system when installed should be

lower than the water level in the cooling tower. This is to allow for the water to
remain in the Separator even when the Separator system is not in operation
and prevent the Separator from pump starting up dry. If any part of the
Separator system is installed above water level, checks valves must be
installed along both inlet and outlet pipeline.

Purging
The Separator needs regular purging to remove accumulated dirt in the lower
chamber and prevent dirt from rising up to upper portion of the separator and
interfere with separator liquid flow.

Purging is better done while the system pump is in operation to provide a

pressured emptying of the lower chamber which removes more dirt than neutral
draining of the purge line.

Water used during purging cycle is a small amount and almost never greater
than the water treatment blowdown. Thus the separator purging cycle can be
used as a means of water treatment blowdown.

Start Up / Service and Maintenance Check List

Item Description
1 Check Separator is good condition
2 Open the Prestrainer and empty it of any dirt that would restrict water
flow
3 Turn the Pump shaft by hand with power supply turn off to ensure the
pump impellar turns freely.
4 Check for correct Power Supply (voltage)

Item Description
5 Open all Inlet and Outlet valve and ensure that the Separator system
is filled with water.
6 Turn On Power Supply and check Pump is turning in the correct
rotation as shown on the pump. Switch phases and turn on the pump
again.
7 Open air relief valve.
8 Check the running amp of the pump
9 Allow the pump to run for a while before activating the purge cycle.
Check the automatic purge valve opens and closes within the set
period of time for the purge by pressing the manual purge
pushbutton

Unlike other industry separators, the ACMV Separator does not require a
minimum pressure drop across the inlet and outlet to ensure proper operation.
The Separator in particular the wide body Hi E Separator have a lower
pressure drop than most industry separators and requires less pump motor
horsepower to operate.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Hi E Separator Systems

Although our packages are designed for trouble free operation, there are
occasions where noise and/or low flows are observed. Here is the checklist, in
order of priority, for eliminating noise/low flow conditions in our Separator
System packages.

1. Check inlet basket strainer for debris: Large floating solids can clog
the strainer and cause pump cavitation, especially during start-up.
2. All Isolation valve must be opened.
3. Pump rotating backwards 3 phase pumps only: This is probably
the most common and baffling cause of a flow/noise complaint. Check
the rotation of the pump/motor against the arrow indication on the pump
starter. If the unit is rotating in the wrong direction, disconnect the power
and reverse the L1 and L2 connections at the starter.

Nose or vibration in the Pump Unbalanced rotary parts or worn bearing:

Check pump parts
Pump and piping not properly secured:

Tighten down pump and piping.

Pumping less flow than normal Prestrainer Choked: Remove Strainer
cover and clean strainer.
Check pipework is not obstructed
Pump Impellar worn out: Replace impellar
Jammed Impellar: Check for debris and
remove debris. Replace impellar if
necessary.
Air in the system: Bleed air from filtration

Instructions in a Valve Fault Situation (Valve in Mid Position)

Note the position of the Valve: Filter Mode or Backwash Mode or mid
position. Turn Off power supply to the Filtration Unit at the Isolator and
contact your nearest representative.

Valve: Fault can occur from the following causes:

Causes Solutions
When the electric actuator is not properly The electric actuator needs to be
mounted on to the valve causing a slow down remounted again and all valve handles
