6. STATE BRIEFLY THE OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE OF THE PROPOSED
RESEARCH WORK

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is the most common cancer of

childhood and is the first disseminated cancer shown to be curable. The
advent of chemotherapy has increased the survival rate dramatically.
However effective therapy can cause adverse interactions and
complications. Significant changes in lipid levels have been observed in
patients of ALL receiving chemotherapy. Hypertriglyceridemia also
correlates with pancreatitis in such patients. The study focuses on
evaluating the alterations in lipid levels in patient of ALL receiving
chemotherapy. Secondary outcomes of the study include correlation
of lipid levels with nutritional status , risk stratification , development of
pancreatitis and occurrence of thromboembolism and osteonecrosis.

7. LACUNAE IN THE KNOWLEDGE ON SUBJECT:

No similar study has been done on lipid profiles during ALL

chemotherapy in our country , although some studies are
available in western literature . So by this study we will be able to
comment on lipid levels in Indian children receiving
chemotherapy for ALL and also compare the results with studies
done world wide.
8. STATE THE PRELLIMINARY WORK YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE ON
THIS PROBLEM eg. Selection of subjects , standardization of methods
etc, giving results, if any:

A brief review of literature has been done.

Inclusion and Exclusion criteria has been decided

INCLUSION CRITERIA : Newly diagnosed

ALL patients in 2 to 14 years age group giving consent to

participate.

EXCLUSION CRITERIA : Previously diagnosed cases already receiving

chemotherapy, relapsed and refractory cases.

10. BRIEF RESUME OF RELEVANT LITERATURES ON THE PROPOSED

PROBLEMS AND LIST OF IMPORTANT REFERENCES: I
In patients of ALL receiving chemotherapy significant changes in lipid
levels have been observed. Triglycerides , LDL , VLDL, Cholesterol, Apo B
100 ,Apo C2 levels have been observed to be increased. HDL and ApoA1
levels have been found to be decreased. These changes have been
attributed to altered nutritional status, altered lipid metabolism,
defective LDL receptors and L asparaginase specific interactions.

11. Details of procedures and methods proposed to be used in the
study:

A total of 75 newly diagnosed patients completing induction of

remission will be included in the study

Lipid levels including HDL, LDL, Triglycerides and Cholesterol will be

obtained in ALL patients at the time of diagnosis , at 1 month after
start of therapy and at 6 months .

Lipid level are measured by blood chemistry analyser machine in CCI

Lab of SS Hospital.

Serum amylase and lipase will be done at baseline and 1 month.

Similarly lipid levels are obtained for control group but only once.

A comparison is made amongst the levels obtained at baseline and at

1 month and 6 months.
