TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION OF Doc. No :

BALLAST SYSTEM Rev. No :0
Type : Calculation

1 CALCULATION OF VOLUME DISPLACEMENT

LWL = 175.2 m
B = 28 m
T = 9 m
Cb = 0.669
= L x B x T x Cb
= 175.2 x 28.0 x 9 x 0.669
3
= 29536.6 m

Where : LWL : Length of Waterline

B : Breadth
T : Draft
Cb : Coefisien Block
: Volume Displacement

2 CALCULATION OF MASS DISPLACEMENT

= x Where: : Mass Displacement
= 29536.6 x 1.025 : Sea Water Density
= 30275 ton = 1.025 ton/m3

3 CALCULATION OF BALLAST NEEDED

Based on Doc. No. 01 4214 025 RE, it takes 18% off mass displacement in order
to be able to sink the ship's propeller.

a. Mass Ballast Water Needed

M ballast = 18% x Where : : Mass Displacement
= 5449.51 ton

b. Volume Ballast Needed

V Ballast = M ballast / Where : M Ballast : Ballast Weight
= 5316.59 m3 : Sea Water Density

c. Volume Ballast Needed with expansion estimation

Construction of double bottom (where the tank is planned in WB on double
bottom) = 2%,
Expansion due to heat = 2%
The number of additional volume = 4%.

V WB = V Ballast x Additional V
= 5529.25 m3

4 CALCULATION OF BALLAST PUMP CAPACITY

Estimation to Fill in and out the water ballast = 8 Hours
Q = VWB/ t Where : Q : Pump Capacity
= 691.16 m3 / hour VWB : Water Ballast Volume
= 0.1920 m3/s t : fill in and out time estimation

5 CALCULATION OF BALLAST MAIN PIPE DIAMETER

dH = (4 x Q) / (v x )0.5 Where : dH : Main Pipe Diameter Inside

= (4 x 0.1920 ) / ( 3 x 3.14) 0.5 v : Flow Velocity in pipe
= 0.2501 m : 3 m/s
= 250.10 mm

6 SELECTION MAIN BALLAST PIPE

Because it lays on the machinery space, so based on GLI - Part I -

Chapter 2 Section 11 Table 11.4 (attached on document) about the
minimum thickness, so the main bilge pipe is on group M. Where the
values of group M is on table 11.5 (attached on document).

Requirement of minimum main pipe's thickness is :

Grup : M
Outside Diameter (da) : from 76.1 mm dH = 250.10 mm
Thickness : 6.6
GL I - Part I - Chapter 2 Section 11 Table 11.4 dan GL I - Part I -
Chapter 2 Section 11 Table 11.5 (tabel M)

The selected pipe based on JIS for Main Pipe: For cooling freshwater pipe, hydrant
Nominal Diameter = 100A water pipe, ballast pipe, bilge pipe,
Inside Diameter = 254.2 mm sanitary pipe, freshwater pipe,
Outside Diameter = 267.4 mm drinking water pipe, feed water pipe
Thickness = 6.6 mm
of maximum working pressure

7 CALCULATION OF BALLAST PUMP HEAD

Head = Hs + Hp + Hv + Head Loss

1. Head Static (Hs)

Head Static (hs) is the diference of length of ballast suction and overboard.
Hs =T + 0.75 [m] Where : T : Draft
= 9 + 0.75 = 9 m
= 9.75 m

2. Head pressure of pump (Hp)

Head Pressure is the diference of pressure on the suction and discharge.
Because the pressure on th both side is same, so
Hp = 0 m

3. Head velocity (Hv)

Head Velocity (hv) is the difference of flow velocity on suction side and
discharge side. So
Hv = 0 m

4. Head Loss
viscosity (u) = 1.1 cst At 50C
= n/10
u = 0.0000011 m/s

Reynold number (Rn)

Rn = (v*dH)/u
= ( 3 x 254.2 / 1000 ) / 0.0000011
= 693273 ==> Turbulen Flow

For is determined by the reynold number. If the reynold

number is <2.300 itll use the equation Re/64, and if more than
2300, the equation is 0,02 + 0,0005 / D.

f = 0,02 +0,0005/dH
= 0,02 + (0,0005 / ( 254.2 / 1000 )
= 0.02475

Suction Head
Major Losses (hfs)

hfs = f x L x v2 / (D x 2g) Where :

hfs = 0.02475 x 21.45 x 32 / ((105.3/1000) x 2 x 9.8) L = Length of pipe suction
= 0.27 m = 6 m
g = Gravitation
= 9.8 m/s2

= 3.02 m

Head Suction = Minor Losses (hms) + Major Losses (hfs)

= 0.3 + 3.02
= 3.29 m

Discharge Head
Major Losses (hfd)

hfs = f x L x v2 / (D x 2g) Where :

hfs = 0.02475 x 71.94 x 32 / ((105.3/1000) x 2 x 9.8) L = Length of pipe suction

Head Discharge = Minor Losses (hmd) + Major Losses (hfd)

= 6.2 + 7.82
= 14.05 m

Total Head Losses = Head Suction + Head Discharge

= 3.29 + 14.05
= 17.3 m

4. Head Total

Head Total = Hs + Hp + Hv + Head Losses
