Special Needs

Learning Outcome:
This assignment aims to be aware of the importance of support structures for
students with SEN and identify possible strategies that can be put into practice to
teach in inclusive classrooms.

Instructions:
Read article Special educational needs in English language teaching: towards a
framework for continuing professional development.
Watch the video and answer questions.
Complete the following activities.

1. Write some ideas about the following.

LIST-GROUP-LABEL

List: list words you associate with Special education needs. 15 words
Group: get the list from any of your classmates and combine your individual list.
Label: create categories and determine an appropriate label for each group of words.

During Reading
1. What is a learning difficulty?

Learning difficulties are barriers for learning properly, they can be transitory or
permanent but mainstream schools are putting effort on developing equal conditions
for every student.

2. Give examples of possible difficulties caused by SEN and how teachers can deal with.
When a student is inattentive the teacher can request an example or to verify
comprehension, or when a student has a lot of energy we can use it to motivate other
students.

3. In what conditions do students have special educational needs?

Students are under this condition when they have certain cognitive or socio affective
problems such as Asperger, autism, ATD, etc.

1. How can the special educator collaborate in the process of teaching a language?

Using multisensorial learning, it means using the senses and the body to teach rather
than paper and sits like in a traditional classroom

2. In what way can the special educator and the teacher of a language bring the two
worlds together? What is the purpose?

In the way that ESL, SEN and G. ED work for a common aim which is educating our
children in an inclusive environment and enhancing the learning process.
