Question 3:

What is the impact of the topic on media production in your specific media sector? Refer to you
primary and secondary research in your response.

My specific media sector is the television industry. The topic has some impact on it, as my research
states that children are viewing television on different devices. Such as tablets and mobile phones.
These portable devices have become extremely popular, which means most children will have one at
home. Having on-demand services allows anyone to watch a show of their choice, at a time of their
choosing. Whereas, with television, there is an entire schedule. This means certain shows will be
broadcasted at a certain time. There is also a watershed in place which stops younger children
seeing shows that are not suitable for them to see.

However, with on-demand services on the rise, children of all ages can watch these unsuitable
shows with no form of regulation. Like Netflix, YouTube is also extremely popular. All kinds of
content can be found, such as prank videos, TV shows and much more. The content on YouTube is
also created by its users. This shows that the site is entirely dependent on prosumers. From my
research I have found that children are spending more time on the internet than watching TV. An
article I found from the BBC sates that more than half of respondents access TV and video via
YouTube since 2013.

The internet and social media can also contain a lot of televised content which may not necessarily
be regulated. With sites like Facebook, its content isnt regulated, but rather reported by its user. In
a way, the consumers regulate it. This effects the television industry as more children will be viewing
content online. The ratings for shows will decrease and could possibly be cancelled. One particular
channel thats affected is BBC One. My research shows that its audience of 7-16-year-olds has
dropped from over 80% in 1995 to just over 40% in 2014. ITV also has similar audience decreases.
The information I have found from the BBC website is valid as it was written in 2015. The
information within it has comparisons from 10 years ago to show dramatic changes. The BBC can
also be trusted as its funded by the public and therefore respects it.

From my experiment/ focus group, I have found that my sample, in fact, preferred DVDs to Netflix
and television. Three young children were given a choice of what theyd like to watch; upon
agreement they chose DVDs over every option. To my surprise, when I asked why, they responded
with Its different. These shows arent on TV or Netflix, we want something new. Although this
research contradicts the stimulus material, it can be used as a comparison. This research is
somewhat invalid as well. The sample was extremely small and were family relations. The
experiment was also done in the comfort of their home; although parents werent present. This
could still impact product, but not as much as on-demand services would.
